Well to be considered one of the best ever you have to have something to show for it. I agree with the fact that he was incredibly talented but he did not have the drive and determination to be all he could be. He had many problems mainly alchoholism during his career and he could never overcome it. It was very unfortunate because despite not being from a powerful national squad he could have had a great career with big european clubs. Maradona who played with him talks wonders about him.

Well to be considered one of the best ever you have to have something to show for it. I agree with the fact that he was incredibly talented but he did not have the drive and determination to be all he could be. He had many problems mainly alchoholism during his career and he could never overcome it. It was very unfortunate because despite not being from a powerful national squad he could have had a great career with big european clubs. Maradona who played with him talks wonders about him.

its like taking a good nba player, say... derron williams, or chris paul, or brandon roy , and putting them to play their whole careers in the chinese league or in india, or somewhere where the level of competition isnt so good. by the end of their career they would average probably a tripple double, just rediculous stats. and he would probably have tons of highlights. and then compare them to jordan, or wilt, or bird etc. but put them against the best and they would just be good, not great.

between 76 and 84 the english league was the best followed by italy and germany, from 84-99 the italian was the best followed by the spanish, so magico gonzalez wasnt playing in the best league.

After Cruyff was drafted in the mid-70`s,``La Liga`` was a magnet for the best players and trainers of the world and they really were there during the 80`s, my assesment was based in these facts. The Premier league become really strong at the end of this epoch.

The EUFA has a system to assest which league is stronger based on the interclubs tournaments, their assesment is that the Bundesligue (Germany) was stronger up to 1985, one year the Premier, and the the last 4 years of the 80`s was the Italian the strongest.
As you can see we arrive at a (3) differents conclusions, its all depends of the parameters that we use.
But I think that we can agree, that if there is a difference is really NOT THAT BIG.

Hi, well in restropective in the 80`s the Spanish league was a very good and tough defense (even criminal for modern standards). Maradona played well in Spain with Barcelona and was injured by Goikoetxea, (the same guy who ended Schuster career about the same time) and Maradona really shined in Italy which is known for their defensive football. Magico shined in Spain, there is no doubt he would also shined in Italy.
