Doctor found a heart murmur....so sad, but true

Doctors found my heart murmur when I was a teenager. Didn't stop me from climbing 14,000 foot mountains and doing 20 years in the Army. I'm 63 now. Mine was functional, meaning I just had a noisy valve. Whenever I had a physical, I'd say "so you found my functional apical systolic heart murmur." Usually they'd reply "I guess you know about it." It hasn't shown up in the last 10 years or so. The point is, they may or may not be dangerous. Mine wasn't. As for the puppy, maybe, maybe not.
