well, for clarification on the "reeducation programs", my parents were "sent down" at 18, as all chinese young people were, tibetans included. the "reeducation" included farmwork, and propaganda rallies. noone my family knew, or the friends of my family knew, were killed or even harmed at reeducation camps. and my grandfather was a landlord, and subject to persecution. yet he, nor any of my family were murdered, just humiliated.andif the genocide is as bad as you say it was, that seems unlikely.

Singapore is a country that conduct a REAL war on drugs (I.E. a war with victims). They are also democratic. They can change their draconian laws in a heartbeat.
Don't mistake me on Saudi-Arabia; I hate those clowns. The U.S. is stuck with them since the end of the Cold-War and I am sure that they will be dropped flat at the moment we would stop buying their oil (In the next 20 years).
As far as China goes, they will never reach freedom. They are only Empires followed by Empires, nothing new.

singapore is a one party system. there is one party with 90 percent of seats, and the presidency, and opposition parties were created by this one party to make it seem more democratic. singapore is an example of how a highly controlled government can do so much for its people. I used to live there. laws are really strict, but fair. and if europe can transition from monarchy and empire to democracy, why not china?

yup, i knew that if you were caught with a certain amount of certain drugs, you'd be put to death, the gov. made it known. obviously, there are exceptions, when it is obvious it was planted or something. but still, singapore has a free press, a great education system, and is not a monarchy. my family emigrated from there, it is not oppressive. there is a differnt view of democracy, a practical one where if total freedom comes at the price of people's welfare, it is hard to say it is worth it.

hmm, here is where we start get into talking about the differing values between east and (modern) west. it seems ridiculously harsh (to me, too)to execute someone for carrying some marijuana, even for smuggling. but for many in the east, breaking the law means you must be punished, sometimes harshly (not rehabilitation, like the west). I was caned as a child. it is the same thing. if singapore had looser laws on drugs especially, because it is a trade hub drugs and with it crime would be rampant

that is because the population density is 12000 per square mile. if everyone has a car, noone would get anywhere. singapore has a fantastic public transportation system. there is no need for cars, they are only for convenience and elitism. and my parent's retirement accounts are fine, and even though they switched citizenships they are still entitled to them.

Tibet is as much a part of China as Alaska is a part of USA. In fact, during the Yuan Dynasty when the Mongols invaded China, Tibetans were among the ruling elites that made hell for the subjugated. It is a credit to China that when the Chinese regained dominance and integrated Tibetans instead of taking revenge on them with ethnic cleansing as done in Eastern Europe. Tibetans should study history rather than listen to foreign agents bent on creating hell. Which the Tibetans will have to pay.

I know the dalai lama is nonviolent, and a good guy. and the monks were peacefully protesting, but then afterwards tibetan freedom groups started riots, and 14 people died (CNN). I just think there's a double standard in judging world affairs. the other week 50 palestinian civilians were killed by israeli forces, but americans don't seem to care.

China used to be a kid Nation barely viable on the economic level. We let them grow by opening our markets to their products. So we make them what they are.
This being said, I hold four values as the keystone of Humanity: Capitalism, Democracy, Human Rights and a responsible government. All the successful countries out there have embraced those ideas. China fails in all those values so I have little pity for them. I will treat them like children until they are proven worthy as a modern nation.

Well, what I was saying about Africa and latin america is that free trade has not helped them, and in some cases has worked against their fledgeling economies. And the problems in India are far worse than in china. for one, the life expectancy is 60, while china's is 71. the wealth gap is much larger, and the poor bear the brunt of the pain when it comes to economic development.
