Well, we didn't lose our apartment to fier, but after having kept that burned piece of wood in our home for three days, both our cars broke down. . . .
The causes weren't too serious, and both our cars were up and running later that afternoon. Needless to say, I made up my mind that my wife and I would remove that piece of wood from our apartment.
Anymore bad luck? None since removing the wood!

You know, I hope for GODSAKES NOBODY takes ANYTHING from this or the site of any large scale fire disaster!
Some back story:
I recovered a half-burned piece of timber - about 6 inches long - from a non-fatal near where I live. Now my wife comes from a country where it is strongly believed to be bad luck to bring home pieces of a building that burned in a fire - EVEN IF IT WAS A NON-FATAL - because that meant that your house might be the next to go!
