no way is this keith moon on drums, doesn;t sound like him at all....way way too polished. I love the who and moonie, I think he was one of tghe best drummers ever but this is not him
"don't pick your nose at the table" LOL sounds like dinner at my house.......... i'll bet that he was going to put in some horns, but instead of going thru all that trouble on a demo john and keith just blew on kazoos. ya gotta love his wacked-out sence of humor. :)
Your probably looking at and listening to the the greatest percusion act ever. To me as a bass player, JE will never be surpassed, and imagine having KM behind you ! The were and are brilliant !
@dogma264 This song was intended for the 'Who Are You' album of '78! Another great song intended for the album was pete's song 'empty glass'- have a listen to the who demo! The song ended up as the title track of pete's first real solo album! Great post!
Ahead of it's time!! That keyboard sound sounds like something from the 80's-Thomas Dolby, or something. & Moon w/ the hi-hat (although, he did a lot of that in the studio-but not live-for whatever reason-Entwistle was quoted as saying:"because the hi-hat wasn't loud enough!") You'll notice at the end of the song, he switches to his beloved cymbals! And boy, Entwistle could sing! Always held it together "live" when Townshend was too busy windmilling to provide back-up/harmonies.
are any of you people serious? The Who was and still are part of the Holy Trinity of The British Invasion.
Pete was one of the first people to work with Synths and was the influence on bands like Pink Floyd. Pete still remained the great writer he had always been and Roger finally found his true voice after Tommy. Keith was still as strong as ever and John never ever faltered in his ability to play bass. No one could ever play like him, and still today no one can. Know your info first.
pete had been writing with synths since 1971, he was one of the first to figure out to work a moog synt. he wasnt writing to change with times he was developing the times
too rare but consistent. i am obsessed with sci fi music. my music takes you in without words for hours. i wanted to meet any competition. john was worthy
As a songwriter, he was very underrated. A listen to many of the songs he wrote for not only the Who but his solo albums as well would confirm that. `Whisky Man', `Success Story', `Silas Stingy', `What Are We Doing Here?', `Apron Strings', `I Found Out', `Thinking It Over', `905', `Ted End', to name just a few, are tunes I first heard as a teen and still sing to myself to this day.
yeah theyre all pretty lackluster. pete was trying to write music that was shifting with the times but he really couldnt. the exclusion of really synth driven riffs kind of ruined their sound and keith moons drumming was lacking at the time. really not a great album.
@ eldato333 - yep maybe. i'm pretty convinced there's a few very famous who numbers where the drumming was actually pete's. mainly due to the fact that moon wasn't comfortable playing in 6/8 time or 3/4. if you've heard any of pete's drumming on demos etc you'd recognize it. he's pretty decent. "they're all in love" from "who by numbers" is a possible example.. no disrespect to the moon-meister though, before a million irate fans jump on me. he was the original and best of course!
wat a talanted man.......its a shame that his solo albums or songs were never noticed when he was alive....better writer and better musician than townsend. rip johnny twinkle
John has such a wicked sense of humour. He was a devilishly dark and funny songwriter - A lot of his songs are like creepy little fairy tales. Anyone who loves this should immediately go out and buy 'Smash Your Head Against the Wall' and 'Whistle Rhymes'. Two excellent albums from the man they called 'The Ox'.
I really love the way John writes in such a direct manner when telling the stories. The songs are as subtle as steel-toe capped boot to the noggin.
And the same applies to John. Pino Palladino is a fantastic bass player, but none of these guys would be half of what they are now without John's revolutionary technique. Same goes for most of today's rock drummers. Almost every one will say that Keith Moon was one of their heroes when it came to the drums. He said he wanted to be immortal - looks as though he has achieved his wish - one of the most widely influential drummers of this or any time :-) Such a shame he isn't around to see it.
@jkllad That is true. :) When I first heard it, I didn't recognize Keith's drums. He's got beautiful control here, and sounds solid. :) I love Keith, and John, but love them most when they are together. :)
To all those who say that this drumming sounds too disciplined to be Keith...have a listen to "I'm Free" from the Tommy album. He's very disciplined in that. He keeps in time throughout the song and doesn't do nearly as many flourishes and fills as he normally does. I think Keith liked to prove he could every now and then. The best rock drummer that has ever been (in my humble opinion), and John Entwistle probably the best bass player in the world too. Both of them sorely missed.
completely agree, moon could play a simple back beat whenever he wanted, he CHOSE to play the way he did, which was incredible and added so much to pete's songs. the ox and keith the two most revolutionary/best musicians in their respected fields imo.
It's funny "bigdave" because I remember an interview with Pete when he said that Roger was the best interpreter of his songs that he could ever have wished for, but I think that should apply to Keith and John as well, because without them, The Who just wouldn't have been The Who - as was proved all too well when Kenney Jones joined them after Keith's untimely death. Jones just didn't fit. Zak Starkey isn't doing a bad job, but nobody is Keith, and never will be.

unfourtunalty, this was the result of his alcoholism and the fact that the band had been on haitus since '75. Together, these kept him off his drums so his playing became EXTREAMLY simplifiy.

It's Keith. For another "restrained" example, listen to "Miss Otis Regrets", a recently released LaBelle track from, I think, '72.

His solo band blew anthing the WHO did (post Moon) away, sadly very few got to see them. John "unchained" can anybody imagine?
Most of the shows were in the states. John only surrounded himself with brilliant people.
