  • I'm fairly sure he used a pick on this song, but i do love the way it sounds fingerstyle

  • 0:29 -- 0:32 - Feel the groove!

  • Comment ça grooooooove, joli son, j'aime^^

C'est con qu'elle soit pas sur guitar pro, en tab écrite, j'arriverai jamais à retranscrire le "groove", je ne peux que admirer !

  • youre awesome.

  • YeAh......SoLiD!!

  • Watching this video, I have realized that the secret to playing like Justin Meldal Johnsen is the hair. All you need is a crazy white guy fro and you are ready for business.

  • great job !!!

  • Came for the hair, stayed for the grooviness.

  • Awesome fro. Awesome-er playing.

  • Excellent

  • very welll done... i tough this song was impossible to play ;p

  • Nice job man.......

  • seinfeld and kramer had a kid this is what hed look like. great playing though

  • Absolutely killer playing, and total proof that you don't need to slap to play nasty, stanky, FUNKY lines! :D

  • This is bloody great - I never payed enough attention to the bassline on this song. Superb, and cheers for bringing it to light!

  • This is so much sicker than the original version.

  • nice

  • nice... eres la neta...

    wow....

  • @KipperThaDowag : or you could get better speakers with a sub.

  • badass, man. this makes me want to put away my guitar and develop my bass skills more

  • Beck didn't. It's the work of Justin Meldal-Johnsen, Beck's former musical director and bassist.

  • You're making me dance around in my office chair. Cut it out! I can't leave voluntarily, so it's really all your doing.

  • you should tab that out for us...I found a tab on ultimate guitar but it's pretty worthless so I'm gonna have to try and get it by ear which will take longer and not be as good I think...what key is that?

  • there's a transcription in bassplayer... good luck

  • @musicjanbe Can you explain what that means exactly? Maybe a link? I want to learn this so bad.

  • bravo!!!

  • I wanted to play this song on my bass..i think i'm gonna quit playing bass..

  • niice bass dude whats the model?

  • Lakland Daryl Jones Signature model.

  • thanks

  • Yes, for their import line, it's an incredible bass in its own right.

  • Great job man. I just picked up this same bass for $700 this week! Nice huh? I'm stealing some of your ideas btw. Thanks! If you ever come through Cincinnati OH I'll buy you a beer. Is that the going rate on a bass fill nowdays?

  • Thanks guys! I have now also the bob glaub us model, also verrrrry nice;-) when i'm in the us... you know it!

  • u look like justins cousin

  • You're a frikkin douche-bag!!!! (Sorry, I just needed to counter-balance the other comments a bit.)

  • love the hair XD groovy!

  • Flawless. Great pocket and tremendous display of over hand technique. Beautiful Lakland too.

  • amazing!

  • Wow, that is really really awesome. I'm looking for a new Jazzbass, too. Could you tell me, how low you can set the action on this bass? Concerning the fretboards quality... Thank you, you got a great sound!

  • I also want to buy a lakland. Could you tell me more about the bass? Thx!

  • It's a darryl Jones Skyline... (elixir strings, and straight into garageband) go to their site, an hear the soundsamples! great basses...

  • what about string gauge?? and for pickups what do you use?

  • Fat!

  • this bassline is SICK!

  • i dont think anyone realises that this is actaully Justin Meldal-Johnsen (the bassist for beck and also ars volta for a while) this is not a cover its actually him playing his own song! i doubth you are going to reply but are those flatwounds and do you ever use roundwounds

  • Hi , Thanks;-)

    These are roundwounds ELIXIR strings.

On my hollowbody basses I use Flatwounds

    J

  • nice man thanks i just want to let you know im a huge fan! i love your playing! take care and all the best

  • I'm pretty sure that's not Justin Meldal Johnson. This is on the page of a guy who makes effects pedals and is called John. He is also a bass player. While the hair is similar. They don't really look alike.

Anyway, love your playing John and your effects look awsome, hopefully one day I will own a couple.

  • i think it is the pedals are called big johns and he looks very much like justin also he didnt say anything about not being justin when he relied so it could be

  • It isn't actually him, but John here is quite the name in modern bass playing. He has his own line of high-end pedals that are used by a lot of professional bassists.

Funny enough though, Justin is actually one of them!

  • if you ever come to argentina, you´ll play in our band.

    that bass line is great.

    greatings from buenos aires.

  • Yeah!Are you great!!

    Grandissimo!!!!

  • YES.

  • "...was playing bass and I jizzed in my pants!" haha sorry those faces. But on a serious note...killer man, what are you reading off of, a Beck basslines book? and where can I get it, heh.

  • Waaw, what a bassplayer you are... yu wanna come and rock in my world?

    Foxylane 1

  • That was freakin cool! Hell yeah!

  • can't stop shakin' my ass! *****

  • which bass is that on the video? sounds radical, and it has feeling.

  • Looks like a Lakland Darryl Jones.

    Great basses ;-)

  • dude, this is the coolest video on Youtube. You ROCK!

  • 0_o

    wow...

  • Great playing!!!

    Nice Lakland!

  • You got chops, dude. Good work.

  • Awesome tone and great playing

  • You are a very good player Musicjanbe. Your sound/tone is also top notch. Does that Lakland have the original Aero pickups that came on the models before 2008? I am thinking of replacing my Nordstrands for Aeros. What do you think? Hope to hear from you.

  • Hi,

    It has the original pickups...

  • dood u rock! Nice Bass!!!!!

  • Wait a sec, isn't he te real bassist of beck?

  • you got this transcription from a bass mag huh? i saw it in bass player i think... either way. good stuff

  • Your version is really cool, even though it's not that close to what Justin plays. Believe it or not, it's actually played with a pick.

  • Move to Sweden and join my band!!!

  • owkay, Do you have a lot of concerts?

    thanx

  • good boy~~!! impressive(Gam Dong..◁korean language)haha

  • Is it skyline series? It sounds so good!!

  • yes, and I'm just wondering why the fokk the bass is always fauking undermixed in them Beck songs: such a fuoking shame ! I couldn't ever hear it until you posted this little work of yours, thanks !

  • just wondering...how did you get that tone? what amp/EQ configuration/pedals are u using to get that amazing tone! It is impressive! (:

  • Lakland DJ model-presonus soundcard/preamp-Imovie (apple) that's it for Beck's song!

I used a lot of diffirent configurations for bands i'm in (see myspace! thanx!

    J

  • so groovy mate! captures the energy of the song - and the groove

  • you look like seinfeld on an acid trip. nice playing though.

  • hey dude you work this out yourself or you reading some sheet music? tommy

  • Great groove and killer tone! I own a LAKLAND too, and was wondering if you use flat or halfwound strings ??

  • Hi There,

The strings are the original lakland roundwoundstrings!

    Thanx

    John

  • really really decent sound, professional quality sound tbh. nice fat bass crunch while still retaining that nice trebley cut through

  • Not only are you amazing but i have a suspicion that you are in fact beck's bassist

  • He just shares the same kind of hair :D

    Great playing

  • you got flats on that beast? sounds nice!

  • did you have to look like dat lol

  • Justin Meldal-Johnsen is such a monster bass player in the field of pop/rock/funk/soul that he is into.

This is brilliant! Great playing dude

  • Awesome job of a badass song.

  • Dude...you are amazing...i mean, I got that issue of bassplayer right infront of me...but that doesnt come out when i play lol...you actully kinda look like becks bass player in the pick in the magazine lol

  • You are reading the bassline from a program I gess.... like guitar pro or something... please send me whatever it is xD..

    I need to play that

  • Hey,

yes I read from the magazine BASSPLAYER!

  • Got this bassline in a magazine. Bassist Medal Johnsen commented on how he was surprised with the bassline he had come up with. Watchin your video made this so clear to me, thanks for playin with such style.
