  • Ya You are all right. The goals are not Stelea fault. I do not understand why he should lose a ton of confidence.

  • Guys this is all interesting stuff. You have to take into account that one football game is also a lot about luck. Switzerland was a bit luckier in this match but much unluckier in the match against Spain. The first Spanish goal was preceded by a foul and it was offside as well.

  • Another problem for Romania in that game was playing in the Pontiac Silverdome. Switzerland was already used to playing in a stadium where the temperature can change at any minute because of the greenhouse effects that happen in a dome while Romania wasn't.

  • @shorewood2 Well, that's true - but still, 4-1 seems a bit heavy. Colombia beat Switzerland 2-0 and Romania beat Colombia 3-1, which would make it seem that Switzerland would be easy as pie for Romania. Ofcourse, this underestimation of Switzerland might've been Romania's downfall - or it's the greenhouse effect too.

  • @DrStrangebomb1993 Switzerland was still a good team back then, and they were in the top 10 or so heading into the tournament so it wasn't like they were playing against a minnow. Despite the score the level of play between Romania and Colombia was about even, and Romania got a little bit lucky with the Hagi goal, and Colombia probably should've converted another goal.

  • @DrStrangebomb1993 It probably was the green house effect because Switzerland really beat Romania badly in the 2nd half and that's when it really effects teams, and Switzerland was used to the effect while Romania wasn't. On another field it's probably a slight Romanian advantage, but it really didn't matter as Romania finished first in the group.

  • The Swiss deserved the win, Romania played really bad that day. The crap part is, the manager blamed the goalie Stelea and changed him with Prunea, whose crappy, almost unnoticeable talent caused the Swedes to win the 1/4 finals.

  • @DrStrangebomb1993 I'm not as sure as you are. Prunea wasn't very good, but Stelea reportedly lost a ton of confidence after the team. They obviously didn't trust him, and they didn't want to take the risk with him in the next game seeing as they couldn't lose the game if they wanted to advance.

  • @shorewood2 Look at the replay - none of the goals were Stelea's direct fault. Oh sure, he didn't save them alright - but then again, the Romanian back-4 didn't help him a lot either. Stelea was a good goalie, taking his performance against Colombia into account, and the fact that he represented the Romanian team in every international tournament until Euro 2000, when he retired. Prunea was never to play in a big game again, as far as I know.

  • @DrStrangebomb1993 I'm not saying that it''s Stelea's fault. They thought though that with the result that Stelea wouldn't play well in the future matches because he lost all confidence in his skills and they thought Prunea would've played well in the future. I'm not defending what they did, I'm just saying why they did it. I'm just not sure if Stelea would've been so much better then Prunea if the idea that he lost all confidence like they said he did.
