@zippypoppy I had a very similar experience with end of the world but I found it easier to cnclude that it was not them that did it because I like most of the other songs
Heard it on the radio today and liked it - improved my headache-insppired bad mood. Just a small question, do the lyrics have any hidden meaning, or are they really just about making people think about the way they are facing. Reminds me of being 5 year old and in our local park, facing west and saying, "America is that way!"
@Tranxhead; It's mostly meaningless, but I like to think an optimistic song issuing a call to reason, telling people to be more self-aware of what direction they're steering their lives. Pretty simple, but it's a catchy song so it doesn't matter.
I've always pictured a man looking for his son out in the forest. He begins singing this song and a golden compass faintly appears around him. His son begins to hear him and fixes his feet, shifting north and west as the lyrics dictate. Then, slowing earth peels off the globe and lifts over his head. The spot where his son stands is directly over him, upside down and they lock hands. At the end, his father begins running in his son's direction, confident of finding him. Music video idea.
@FoeHammer391 Don't worry, you're in the RIGHT generation.. you have access to music of the past, and technology of today... isn't better to SHARE WORLDWIDE our love for music, with youtube? (once upon a time, youtube didn't exist (can you believe it?!)
Fantastic show with the great Chris Elliot aka Peterson! The song is also great and very catchy. I guess its about the importance of being grounded, and solid.
wow first vid i seen so far that has no dislikes..lol amazing!! i really do miss the old days...i dont like the 2000;s imagine if we get too the 3,000s lol it does feel strange no longer seeing things that are 1999;s anymore.
Does no one else notice the album featured in the video is the "Best of '82-'87" but Stand was on the album "Green", released in 1988? I owned the best of the IRS years, and I would remember this song being on there...
I rate this song epic. Rarely is something ever so condescending and helpful at the same time. Even the most upbeat song can be made better with just a tinge of frustration. It's like putting bacon on something. At least for me it is.
when i was younger i heard this song a lot. and after not hearing it for years, these lyrics ALWAYS were in my head at least once a week. there are not any songs like that these days that get stuck in your head for years.
@artmonkid Kurt did hear about them. Apparently, according to the Seven Ages of Rock, Michael Stipe and Kurt Cobain talked quite often about touring together and how it would be the big " Generation X " tour. Unfortunetly, Kurt died before anything could happen. I would have killed to have seen that tour. I was born in 1951, so I'm not exactly a Gen X'er, but it was the last great era of rock n' roll.

never have i heard this song before, but what are the odds that i would come across a song weird al changed. great song both versions if you call weird als a version.
@9funday Nah the 80s sucked. Minus The police, The Cars, REM, The Replacements, THe Pixies, Prince, Michael Jackson, some ok punk bands, and not much else. 90s we enjoyed more REM, Soundgarden, Nirvana, more Dinosaur Jr, the early Pearl Jam, Alice in Chains, Sublime, the only good hip hop like De La Soul and a Tribe Called Quest, Flaming Lips, Radiohead, Counting Crows, I can go on and on with good early-mid 90s stuff.
I heard this on Parks and Rec. from Ben's claymation. I love this song!
