  • I heard this on Parks and Rec. from Ben's claymation. I love this song!

  • This plays at my work, I like this song.

  • lol i remember when this song was used as the opening theme to the show Get A Life with Chris Elliot.

  • This was on Parks and Rec last night. It was the greatest part of the episode.

  • @JohnnyNova Thats three weeks of work.

  • @JohnnyNova i was expecting it to stop at 13 seconds lol

  • fuck r.e.m

  • @zippypoppy Did you come here solely to tell everyone that?

  • @zippypoppy Then why are you coming on youtube to find this song?? That makes no sense whatsoever.

  • @zippypoppy I had a very similar experience with end of the world but I found it easier to cnclude that it was not them that did it because I like most of the other songs

  • @zippypoppy then stay out of wal mart (they don't want you there anyways)

  • @zippypoppy 'my' walmart? do you own it? work at it? Or do you just go there and have some sort of kabal for yourself?

  • The Modern Skirts, The B52's, and these guys, are the reason my home-town rocks.

  • I already miss R.E.M. Truly one of the great rock bands.

  • not i ment

  • they are truely dead we got the music :)

  • timeless

  • Stand Up Solider!

  • Heard it on the radio today and liked it - improved my headache-insppired bad mood. Just a small question, do the lyrics have any hidden meaning, or are they really just about making people think about the way they are facing. Reminds me of being 5 year old and in our local park, facing west and saying, "America is that way!"

  • @Tranxhead; It's mostly meaningless, but I like to think an optimistic song issuing a call to reason, telling people to be more self-aware of what direction they're steering their lives. Pretty simple, but it's a catchy song so it doesn't matter.

  • I anyway like this silly song ;D

  • Get a life intro

  • Used to play this one in a band, late 80's. Great song!

  • love this song. Among my favourite's by REM.

  • This is not my favorite R.E.M. song, but this definitly has my favorite lyrics of all time: If wishes were trees, trees would be falling

  • I've always pictured a man looking for his son out in the forest. He begins singing this song and a golden compass faintly appears around him. His son begins to hear him and fixes his feet, shifting north and west as the lyrics dictate. Then, slowing earth peels off the globe and lifts over his head. The spot where his son stands is directly over him, upside down and they lock hands. At the end, his father begins running in his son's direction, confident of finding him. Music video idea.

  • 4+ people can't figure out how to find North.

  • love this song 2 bad they arent together anymore but will always jam to this song

  • @bejeweledcandy Too bad they broke up but as a fan of REM I hope Stipe and crew can succeed in their new life after 30 years of REM.

  • R.I.P. R.E.M.

    It's been great

  • @SW2395 what did they split?

  • @SW2395 For sure...they were true musical legends ♥♥

  • Spam.

  • @jenny151 Nah, the Spam Song is from Monty Python.

  • I just heard this song in my local convient store and I immediately thought of Chris Elliot in "Get a life" LOL

  • Their best song?

  • @RICSIKE06091976 Right along with It's The End Of The World As We Know It (And I Feel Fine).

Yes, that is the song's full title.

  • Get a life!!

  • 3 people are on their knees giving head!!!lmaoooooo!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • @etc1er You are sooo funny! I've never heard anything like that before!

  • @Iceman3524 lmao!thanks man!

  • 3 people can't stand because us 243 broke their legs.

  • 3 people cant stand up at all!

  • @icemanjayketchum 3 people are crippled

  • @icemanjayketchum Or can't find North.

  • what kind of a song is this pop or rock ?

  • to the person who disliked this video... notice how everyone else liked it?

  • @stephanied10050 They probably either can't find North or are too lazy to stand.

  • why the hell was I born in the wrong generation???

  • @FoeHammer391 Don't worry, you're in the RIGHT generation.. you have access to music of the past, and technology of today... isn't better to SHARE WORLDWIDE our love for music, with youtube? (once upon a time, youtube didn't exist (can you believe it?!)

  • I Love How I Know Like All R.E.M's Songs, But I Had No Clue They Were By R.E.M Until Today xD

  • This song WILL get stuck in your head for a week. It's a fact.

  • @combatcommand hell yes!!!

  • Fantastic show with the great Chris Elliot aka Peterson! The song is also great and very catchy. I guess its about the importance of being grounded, and solid.

Stand in the place where you are!

  • This song reminds me of Get a Life with Chris Elliott. =D

  • wow first vid i seen so far that has no dislikes..lol amazing!! i really do miss the old days...i dont like the 2000;s

  • wow first vid i seen so far that has no dislikes..lol amazing!!

  • Does no one else notice the album featured in the video is the "Best of '82-'87" but Stand was on the album "Green", released in 1988? I owned the best of the IRS years, and I would remember this song being on there...

  • @Kriedley I know, I have Green, but I just use one picture for each artist. All my other R.E.M. videos have this picture too

  • @Kriedley Very true, it is not on the IRS compilation. Lovely song it is too :)

  • I rate this song epic. Rarely is something ever so condescending and helpful at the same time. Even the most upbeat song can be made better with just a tinge of frustration. It's like putting bacon on something. At least for me it is.

  • @SF2036 Cynicism.

  • when i was younger i heard this song a lot. and after not hearing it for years, these lyrics ALWAYS were in my head at least once a week. there are not any songs like that these days that get stuck in your head for years.

  • I still have the original cassette single of this great song

  • yeah 96fm!

  • stand in the place where u werrrrrrk!

  • Such a positive message. If Kurt Cobain had listened to them, he might still be alive.

  • @artmonkid Kurt did hear about them. Apparently, according to the Seven Ages of Rock, Michael Stipe and Kurt Cobain talked quite often about touring together and how it would be the big " Generation X " tour. Unfortunetly, Kurt died before anything could happen. I would have killed to have seen that tour. I was born in 1951, so I'm not exactly a Gen X'er, but it was the last great era of rock n' roll.

  • @ufofan1980 And according to Courtney, the two of them even slept together.

  • This is the song for the tv show , GET A LIFE

  • O.O THIS WAS 1990'S MUSIC!! O.O well.... I LOVE R.E.M THEY'RE AWESOME!!!!! STAND IN PLACE WHERE WERE!! XD its been like 21 years woah cuz its 2011 well THERE MUSIC WILL NEVER DIE!!! IT WILL LIVE ON AND ON AND ON!! i <3 u R.E.M

  • gee when i first heard this song on the radio, i thought it was puddle of mudd

  • @COMBATKILLERable i've never heard this on the radio but i've heard of loosing my religion on the radio yesterday on ym way 2 school

  • @COMBATKILLERable i've never heard this on the radio but i've heard of loosing my religion on the radio yesterday on my way 2 school

  • @COMBATKILLERable you fail at music

  • This is the song that should be played at the Westboro Baptist Church, so they get owned as they deserve!

  • ummm this was late 80's

  • Good 80's song.!

  • I had this song stuck in my head forever. xD

  • never have i heard this song before, but what are the odds that i would come across a song weird al changed. great song both versions if you call weird als a version.

  • your head is there to move you around.

  • So simple, but oh so catchy, great, great REM track.

  • awesome. could you include the original video though. this one is a little lame. good music quality though.

  • @ElConquistador24 the 80's

  • @9funday Nah the 80s sucked. Minus The police, The Cars, REM, The Replacements, THe Pixies, Prince, Michael Jackson, some ok punk bands, and not much else. 90s we enjoyed more REM, Soundgarden, Nirvana, more Dinosaur Jr, the early Pearl Jam, Alice in Chains, Sublime, the only good hip hop like De La Soul and a Tribe Called Quest, Flaming Lips, Radiohead, Counting Crows, I can go on and on with good early-mid 90s stuff.

  • @thespecter2 Agreed.

  • @ElConquistador24 totally agree

  • @ElConquistador24 This was actually the very very late 80's... like, '88 or '89.

  • @ElConquistador24 True, although this song was actually released in 1989 lol

  • @ElConquistador24 This came out in November 1988.
