I am two yesrs natural after transitioning amd cutting off relaxed ends, which is what I would recommend to a teenager.. I have two daughters and I want them to know that their hair is beautiful the way it is and more importantly, they are beautiful inside and out... That is what that young ladies parents should be teaching her.
I can understand exactly where shes coming from... Im 35 & my grandmother told me she hated my hair amd the way I looked... Family members and black coworkers with the comments and stares... All of that was very hurtful.. My husband gave in after six months and accepted it... All of this to say... Am I not beautiful the way I was born.? Other races LOVE my hair!! The compliments I get are amazing! All of this to say that, yes, people can be mean, but I was true to myself and loved me..
2%? Dumbness. I understand where that is coming from though. The commenter below me grew up the way most black girls do, with natural hair and kitchens and stuff being treated as bad things. I am glad women are waking up and seeing that natural hair is so versatile. Not everyone looks good with short relaxed hair either, and unfortunately a lot of black women with relaxers have an even harder time growing it out....
I dont care if tis natural or fake but I would say maybe two percent of woman can pull fo the short hair look and im sorry if this offends youa re not one of them. Dont get me wrong you are pretty but you would be so much more attractive if it was long not straigtened im not saying that but longer.
First I gotta to say I love listening to your voice..it's so soft and sweet! I think she should transition since she's still under her parents care. I can relate.
I started my locs (dreads) in Sept. 2011 & I live on my own but visit home frequently. Since I'm not in a serious career I said why not, if I don't like em I can cut em. Turns out I like them but wish they would loc faster and the loose hairs and new growth is the only problem, At times I miss my waves, but Im in it for the long haul!!
I allowed my daughter to transition when she was 12 by that time I had been relaxing her since age 8. Idk what the big deal is because like you said it could be a phase and let her go thru her phase.
My mother is the same way. You really just have to stand your ground and just be prepared for the daily nagging. I had to do self-affirmations everyday and a lot of meditation so that her words would not bring me down.
I think her parent's reaction isn't really uncommon. If you don't know how to care for natural hair then it seems insane to want it, I suppose. My parents were supportive but I definitely can't say the same for MANY of my friends and even ex-boyfriends. I do however, have a few very close friends who were cheering me right along and my current boyfriend who says he'd much rather I NEVER get a relaxer again. So my advice would be to try to surround yourself with persons who pump you up!
Yeah my family said the same thing when i made the decision but now it's been almost 2yrs since my BC and I'm loving my hair and they have positive things to say now and i influenced a few family members. People need to be who they wanna be and not be the follower of the crowd knowledge is power!
My mother hates my hair also. She used to love doing my hair, but now she says "I'm not fooling with that Kunta Kinte mess on ur head". Well, I love it, my husband loves it and I know it's her own issues. It took me a long time to love myself and not care what other people think. It's so liberating!
omg i thought i was alone. i have a 3 inch blonde fro now. my mother just asked me what am i planning on doing with it. i said continue to grow it out and keep it blonde. she put her hands to her face and said "lord i pray it's just a phase". that really hurt my feelings deep down. i replied in defense talking about how great i feel being natural and she just calmly agreed an nodded her head and changed the subject. now i cant really get it off of my mind, but i am not changing my hairstyle.
I completely feel you! My husband and my step father were against my natural hair! It was hard but I did it anyway! I inspired my mom to go natural and my daddy loves it! It's all about accepting yourself, loving yourself and being comfortable with who you are! They made me feel like I wasn't pretty enough also! Love me with my natural hair or let me go because I am 1 natural diamond!
You know what i'm 16 years old and i've done the big chop and my MOM hates it so much she told me it looked like rat's had been eating off my hair she was so mad....but yet she still talks about me like everybody else in this world and i just smile every time she has to say somthing about it because i know that its only going to make me stronger!!!! so i just want to say THANK YOU MOTHER for being so mean and givin such negative feed back......you are the best mother i've ever had.....so sad
@MsThefamousone My mom was the same way. I have been natural for two years and I STILL hear her mouth. When I first cut my hair, my mom had nothing but negative things to say; she even said I was a lesbian (no offense to the GLBTI community) and that I wouldn't get a job or meet a nice guy; I wasn't pretty enough to have natural hair etc. It made me feel so bad and really damaged my self-esteem. But don't worry! Keep doing you. Your hair style should be 100% your choice! Peace and love
If you notice a lot of the negativity comes from older Black people who had to adapt and conform more to society norms back in the day, than we do in this generation. A lot of the negavity, (for me at least) came from people in the baby-boomer generation. Anyone else notice this?
In my Sub-Sahara African culture.....straight hair is more accepted than having "natural, or "nappy" hair....and light skin...is more PREFERABLE than being dark....well I am dark and natural and loving it...because my lover ENCOURAGED me to be natural and not have any extensions or chemical into my hair.....I LOVE HIM...AND HE INSPIRED ME.....
@Soul4eva1 That makes me sad. My dad's family is from southern africa. I didn't think Africans were colorstruck like that, but guess I was wrong. That's good you had someone to support you! =D
@31makiahkiah Your grandmother is an example of why we should not relax so long. We definitely can have beautiful hair for life without chemicals. I am super happy with my "nappy" hair.
i just did my big chop saturday night and my mom came in from outta town and i just showed and she freaked out and said she hates it and left i think she is crying in her car honestly ...i really feel like i shouldn't be upset with myself and i don't think she should either i cant wait until she gets over the inital shock and embrace it like i have :( btw thanks for your video very inspiring
@imakadruhs I totally agree with u. So many people of our race say that since we have came to this country when we were slaves we news to conform to the white society because that is just the way they do things here. NO! We do not need to conform to our society just because people think that u r more high class or whatever if u have straight hair like everybody else. God made me with beautiful hair and why mess it up just because everybody else has hair straight. My hair is kinky for a reason a
I honestly don't understand what the big deal is. How can someone else make YOU feel negatively about something that's natural? It's so SAD that black ppl still have a slave mentality of dark is ugly and light is beautiful. How DARE we let society tell us that we need to change something that's natural to our culture that GOD has created? If He wanted us to have straight hair, then we would have it. We need to stop trying to correct His perfection with perms bc GOD doesn't make mistakes, WE DO.
This is hard. The generation before us saw straighter hair as a ticket out of poverty and acceptance by the race in power... anyway. Don't disobey your parents, but maybe try to show them some videos on YouTube where black women look beautiful and professional.
I wear a flower in my hair daily and have managed to have a job.
Well for me, I felt like I HAD to do the big chop. My hair breaks a lot when there is relaxed and natural hair like combined or whatever. I think it's cute on me, less versatile, but cute. :P Oh and yeah I feel like black parents should be way more accepting of their children's natural hair, it's kinda weird that they're not :o My mom is great, when I told her I wanted to go natural she was 100% behind me. But yeah, your advice is good! Grow it out and gradually cut it. I'm so impatient I just
Im 16+Ive been influenced by youtubers+others 2 the idea of growing my hair natural. I think its a beautiful+empowering thing 2 see a blck woman that knows how 2 take care of her own hair. Ive been relaxed since 2nd grade+I have BSL hair+I dont think right now is the right time for me to go natural. I want 2 wait until Im est. in life+can take care of myself because I knw my mom doesnt agree w/ it. So right now Im just taking care of my relaxed hair+researching about natural hair until its time.
hmm well my granny does it either! But I been natural 5yrs! I am like God didn't put me on this Earth for EVERYONE to like me or what I do! I do what I do because it works for ME. My mom always comments when its flat ironed or I have weave and straight! But I let it roll off my shoulder. But it helps to have a community of people that believe and support your journey! Luckily my bestie is Natural! AND we first BOTH went natural back in high school during our Jr. year we got flack from people too
I did a BC during 1 of my college semesters w/o my parents knowledge. I went home for x-mas break & my mom literally told me she didnt like it & my dad didnt have to say it cuz he said it w/ his face. Honestly, it didnt matter to me what my parents thought cuz I go to school across the country & had to find my own means of takin care of my hair & $65 relaxers on college student income is not great. I was a little sad cuz they couldnt except the real me at first but its growing on them now :)
My moms the same way, I don't think its that she is hates my natural hair i just believe that they understand what we would have to be subjected to with natural hair. I don't know if that makes any sense lol. Great video
@Makeupology1 Her parents probably just really dislike it and are afraid their daughter will look crazy. You are not "subjected" to anything with natural hair. The only people who have a huge problem with it seem to be other black people and those black people usually are not in positions of power to ACTUALLY hold you down. If you're really scared, just get a weave or braids or put it in protective styles.
@PeaceUdo Don't take the word "subjected" literal, if you have had past experiences with black people in regards to natural hair do not "assume" that all other females will have the same experiences. Subjected has many meanings in regards to natural hair...subjections such as, not getting a promotion at work because your hair is natural, subjected to the "can I touch your hair" fiasco, etc. Sooooo ........................ lol you obviously didn't catch my drift.
I was lucky Most of my family was interested in the fact that I decided to go natural The only negative feedback came from my two younger sisters and boyfriend. They like many people in society think straight is the way to go. That causian-like hair is beautiful and nappy black-hair isnt However, I took the time to explain my reasons for wanting to go natural and now they're more accepting My youngest sister still cringes a lil when she touch my unpermed hair but I get a good laugh outta it :D
How could parents be against natural hair? I think it's a terrible thing, telling kids that they have to change how they look from as young ages as they start to relax them at! If these people feel like the natural hair is holding them back from getting a job, it's not like they can't just get it relaxed at that point, right?
Maybe I just don't get it 'cause I'm white, but I think fros are beatiful and super cool! :D
@VidsByMetz i just saw this and im so happy you said it! a couple of months ago I went to an interview at World Market and I was just thinking about it the other day and I asked myself why didn't I get the job he told me he would call to let me no yes or no.... well he never did. I remember sitting there thinking while I was talking why does he keep looking at my hair that way? I just brushed it off.... well I had another interview at Dish Network and the women conducting it made a face...
Respond to this video... as if she was disgusted and it dawned on me that that may be the reason as to why I didn't get the job..... why do people have to be like ? it is just hair... it may not be as silky and european like but it grows just like yours just more coarse and curly. Honestly I think some people just need to wake up... if it is not your hair then don't worry about it..
@VidsByMetz My mum's just like that. She's against my natural hair and actually got upset and tried stopping me from going natural (I did, however, go natural). How she acted made me feel like my hair's not naturally good enough, the hair God gave me's not right etc.
My mum has naturally curly hair (she's British too), but she gets her hair chemically straightened (and did the same thing for me when I was really little). I have way tighter curls, but, I love them! and I don't want to lose them.
My mother didn't care about me going natural I guess b/c she knew i was always online looking up information on natural hair before I did it. My friend on the other hand didn't even tell her parents she just cut it off herself one day and came down for breakfast and that was that. I feel bad for the women and girls who are told not to go natural even though they kno in their hearts it's wat they want but. yea transition or hide the hair in protecitve styles but 3 years is a long time to wait
Like you've said, don't disobey your parents but what I would say to do is gather some research, explain to your parents that there are harmful toxic ingredients in relaxers. Have a heart to heart with them. Explain that you can still straighten your hair, there are so many points you can give to them. I know that parents love valid, well-researched points.. I hope that the young lady knows that she is beautiful the way she is and that it is wonderful that she is embracing who she is. Thanks!
respect your parents wishes and just transition.......if they dont want you 2 wear it in its natural state then do ask they ask and when you become an adult rock ur natural locks...if this is something that is important to you just tell ur parents how unhappy u r with ur hair and if they still dont listen then wait until ur an adult
i just stop getting relaxers for two months then had a 2 inch cut then got micro braids and just straightened for the next two weeks then summer start wearing natural
Firstly, as a child (he/she is not yet an adult of legal age), they should obey their parents. Now I do not agree with their parents but if their parents told them they can't then they really have to honor that. It also might help if the teen can convince his/her parent why being natural is actually beneficial for them. Present all the pros to your parent hun!
I would definitely agree with you. I'd say to let it transition little by little so it's a less drastic change, and she won't be going against her parents wishes. Great advice girl!
Wow, some of these parents seem really strict. My mom was like "I don't care what you do to your hair". She said that when I was about 13 or 14...then again, I've been "taking care" of my hair since I was 10...so yeah...
i went thru this same thing and i ended up perming my hair again because my mom didnt allow me to big chop after 1 YEAR of transitioning smh . Im going natural as soon as i leave high school
I have been natural for a year and six months. My husband has not once said he liked my hair. I confronted him about this. He said I rather see you wear your own hair than those wigs. He never said when I did wear my wigs that he didn't like them. Whatever! I loved wearing my wigs and I'm loving even more my natural hair. This young lady should just share pictures and articles with their parent of successful and beautiful people that are natural. Let them see our naturalness is beautiful too.
I'm almost 20 & I'm 21 months post & my mom doesn't want me to cut my hair off still. So you can never please everyone. You're the only person that has to deal with your hair because at the end of the day its your hair. So just do big mini chops
you look just like the Mowry twins =D

Maybe I just don't get it 'cause I'm white, but I think fros are beatiful and super cool! :D
Gotta rock what you've got, right?
Why change what's already beautiful? <3

@VidsByMetz If there were more people like you in high positions in the business world, minorities would have nothing to worry about :)

Thanks!

I went natural without cutting my hair. I just let it grow out. Even though it took two years, I did not have to cut my hair all off.

respect your parents wishes and just transition.......if they dont want you 2 wear it in its natural state then do ask they ask and when you become an adult rock ur natural locks...if this is something that is important to you just tell ur parents how unhappy u r with ur hair and if they still dont listen then wait until ur an adult

i just stop getting relaxers for two months then had a 2 inch cut then got micro braids and just straightened for the next two weeks then summer start wearing natural

@abht01 This is a great point!
