I think it's not just about the rhyme. In this song, it's more about the feelings of the Neil at that time employed. In an interview he once said that he when he wrote this song but never alone, but was often very lonely. I think he wants with the chair that does not listen to him merely make his loneliness.

Not even the chair is a theoretic question, he is alone with only furniture and so no-one hears not even the chair, he is merely suggesting that the chair has no feelings and would'nt understand his angst and sense of lonliness, it isn't merely creating rhyme it is a deep and poignant analysis of his situation, it annoys me when people criticise this line in the song as they do it out of ignorance and non understanding of the song, Neil is an intelligent writer and conveys that

Always liked the songs of Neil Diamond. I remember back in the 80's I had a stack of his records. Sadly long gone.

That special rocked and I'm not even huge fan. I mostly remember hearing Diamond on the radio as a kid. I own one of his greatest hits. BUT this show resold me on Neil Diamond. I love watching older seasoned performers that still can bring it and have been through all the fame and whatnot over their career. He's cool.
