I really loath Anna Netrebko these days. Not just her singing, but her acting. Her demeanour on stage is so exaggerated, so flirtitious, so out of character....
Without doubt the worst Donna Anna I've heard staged (and I'm counting school productions). Out of tune, horrid diction, ZERO rhythm, sliding all over the place, and can't keep a pulse. Small wonder they cut the fast part of "Non mi dir..." If you want a dramatic, balls-to-the-wall Donna Anna who can actually sing, try Edda Moser.
Lord save us!! If these groupies keep applauding her appalling coloratura attempts we'll end up with this crazy wannabe bashing Semiramide, Linda di Chamounix and soon even Cleopatra.
Ok, her voice, I hope she would play the Elvira, because the role of Donn`Anna isn`t really for her voice, but she has found her only way for the Donn`Anna!
Bravo Anna!Only talented and a hard worker person, singer,as you can get to the millions of people!Wish you happiness in your private life, lovely husband and kids,be happy!
No way!! I must disagree with that!! Violetta is no slut !!! She may be a courtesan but certainly no slut!! There is a subtle difference, believe me!! She completely OVERDOES it with violetta!! I would rather see a slutty Donna anna than a slutty violetta!!
Definitely...if you make Donna Anna a slut, there's no point for her second aria wherein she tells Ottavio she doesn't mean to be cruel - not to mention that Netrebko's voice would be wrong for this part even if her technique were perfect. She's an Elvira, if anything at all.
Actually, you're right. I've just begun to realize that. It's ridiculous - she can actually be pretty wholesome (L'Elisir, etc.), but some directors just insist on having her show her legs and put a wantonly blank expression on her face.
P.S. I'd actually be interested to see her play Donna Elvira. For some reason, her Anna just doesn't sit right with me (vocally as well as dramatically).
Very well put, and just because she kissed the guy doesn't mean it was "slutty." I mean she's fully covered and its a moment of passion for the character.
I didnt even think Traviata was that bad, I think the director was trying just trying to be fearless and blend the classical with a quirky modernity. Some people just hated the production for whatever reason, as is understandable and even predictable for such a modern show, and I think people carry pre-conceived ideas of Anna's supposed "sluttiness" to every single production she's in.
Yes, I like La Traviata but the acting was really modern, for many people male and for me great. But what think you about the singing from Anna Netrebko?
Well, I have never studied music in some conservatory, as many here have. Yet, I think she has a very unique, creamy voice, as one reviewer said "dark gold on red velvet." Yet she cannot trill, or just doesn't, and her breathing is sometimes off, and the worst thing is that sometimes she sings out of her repertoire.
She has been singing a lot of bel canto roles when she doesn't have the technique, and even though I still love her voice a lot I feel it was better a few years ago. Yet I like her Manon, Traviata, Boheme, etc...
It's because of the money--she sells well I guess. Did you see her I Puritani? YOu can find it here on youtube. I thought the Mad Scene was superb as from as drama goes, and her voice sounded good, but the applause was defeaning. It was as if Maria Callas had rose from the dead and came back on stage.
Her slides and trills weren't strong at all. It is easy to see why casual opera goes who aren't musicians liked it, but there are many opera experts in the crowd too. Are they just following? She is an excellent actress, with a unique timbre in other roles, but the bel canto is ridculous (she's a lyric soprano!)
She keeps getting engagements because evryone says she's wonderful, people go and see her and think she's wonderful because they have never probably heard the correct way to sing Donizetti or Bellini and are drawn by her charisma. I love her in her own repertoire, though, especially Russian.
And you know, aeru9, there are many people here wha are just ubercritical, extreme musicians, and I respect them for that...But opera is something that makes me dream and is a hobby for me, so I take each opera singer as she/he is and apreciate him/her as just that. I think many people love her TOO much, ignorant of the fact that there are vocally superior singers, and some people HATE her too much, sick of performances that don't appeal to them and possessing an odd sort of hatred (?)
But one must remember that the European and American preferances when it comes to the vocal size of Donna Anna and Donna Elvira (which one to have the biggest voice) generally is different. Europeans usually want a bigger sized Elvira, but smaller Anna, and in the US is it usually the other way around.

I like her and I find, she is good. Lyrical and drammatical and she is one of the better sopranos but not the best...

Why does she manage to turn every character she plays into a slut?

I was just thinking that..........

Haha it's really funny...watch her do La Traviata and then she isn't slutty ENOUGH for that - get it right, Ms. Netrebko!

Sorry, but it isn`t Anna Netrebko who make this role slutty...It`s the director, and so was it by the Traviata, too!

I think, it is so. She sang too much bel canto roles=she can it. When not, why she becomes the "engagements" in this roles? You say the truth.
Sorry for my english, it isn`t very good...

Yeah, her voice is nowhere near big enough for this role.

IMHO, she should be singing Donna Elvira (or Zerlina) and not Donna Anna. hopefully she switches before her beautiful voice is totally gone.
