I just can't get the hang of it! I get so far as centering, then as I build up, fast or slow, it breaks! I guess I will have to keep watching - my instructor does it differently and fast and makes it look so easy ~ a second semester student told me to check out you-tube, he learned a lot and he does nice work....I have made 2 successful verticals out of 14-so my instructor says ~ they're to thick....hmmmm
@iluvonedirection8 It just takes TONS of practice and keeping your hand pressure consistent as you move up. When you squeeze too hard you make thin areas. If you can keep the space between your two hands (one on the outside and one on the inside) at the same width, the clay has no choice but to follow your hand shape. In order to get good at throwing pots or anything on the wheel you must flop...A LOT...that way you can learn what works and what doesn't work.
@TheAlyssaj76 Dick Blick or any art retailer would have one but they are NOT cheap and shipping can be a nightmare. For a good pottery wheel you're looking at spending $1000...or more. UNLESS you can get a good deal or a used one.
Hi! I am very fascinated about this. I'm a beginner. What kind of clay do you use and where did you or where can you get it from. I need a reply ASAP. Thank you.
@PrettiGirlRayB I dont know if she has replied yet being that she posted this video in 2009... but just go to an art store and ask for cone 5 or B mix clay... its safe for the kiln and perfect for beginners... and make sure you ask for the one that has the least amount of sand in it (friction pressure and sand dont mix) hope that helps
i have yet to use my rib tool. i use the "wood modeling tool" (thats what my teacher calls it) mostly to get the rest of the clay that actually stays on the wheel. the rest of it usually goes towards the wall.
How do you keep it centered while doing all this? Also if it does become off centered and the bowl is already opened how should I bring it back to being centered?
New students! This is a very poorly centered bowl which resulted in a lopsided bowl. The way she centered created a hole at the top which will likely form a bubble when closed. Look away! Sorry Emily but I had to warn them. I've been throwing for years.
@sphatfield dude knock it off, don't be a ass, atleast she has the balls you dont have to vid it to try to help those who are new at it, and if your "so good" then why the hell are you watching as video titled Ceramics for Beginners: Wheel Throwing. Get a life kid.
oh god I've been looking at all of these videos and I still suck at throwing. we have to make 15+ thrown pots in my class by the end of the semester to pass and I haven't made a single one. everything I touch crumbles and burns lol. shoulda never taken ceramics.
Just want to say thanks for the Wheel Throwing video. I just had my first pottery class, less than one hour ago. Emily makes it look easy, I excited to see more of Emily working with clay...Thanks again!!!
@AKfun2009 ok well ya see there is two main things, clay and porcelain. there isnt something called ceramic that is in that stage of moisture. what she is using in that video is called clay. higher leveled people use porcelain. clay is what beginners use.
@brseyfert123 but what type of clay is best for beginners? i know there are many. but is modelling clay horrible? because i tried modelling clay, and it doesn't shape well. :/
shit looks easy

nice centering, but that bowl is WAY too thick; use the clay to it's full potential.

one question, plz answer it:
for when doing projects on the wheel, the best type item to use is ceramic right? that is the type that you are using in the video?

AKfun2009 1 year ago
@AKfun2009 For the wheel, the best is going to be stoneware clay. It is bagged in the great consistency.
brseyfert123 1 year ago
@AKfun2009 Porcelain and terricotta is also very very smooth easily manipulated clay.
