You can't just say "everything share with you is from scripture"'. "Money is the answer for everything" can be found in scripture... Ecclesiastes 10:19. You need to KNOW scripture itself, not just the jist of it.
You talk to me of "my" fruit, yet you've conventiently gotten by without any help from God's Word. "First take the log out of your own eye, and then you will see clearly to take the speck out of your brother's eye" Matthew 7:5...
The ludicrous statement that Worship requires no Heart is what brought me to the question......When you accepted the Lord was it a performance of was it a act of the Heart? or was it a performance for the congregation at hand. thats what i asked...i didnt claim you were a Heathen...Show your Pastor...how you feel about Heart in worship...and you may have a bit of an issue.
And I quote from my message below: "But God tells us to worship with our HEART, SOUL, and MIND. "
I do you the favour of readingevery word carefully , I ask only for the same in return.
I will show my pastor the conversation this Sunday. Incidentally he was leading the worship in that video which you so un Christianly criticized. I wonder what his reaction to that will be..
I know His opinion on those who perform vs. Worship. those who perform lack the presence of the Holy Spirit. without the presence nothing is accomplished for His sake..read the scripture I posted. Thats cool that you percieve yourself as a piece of clay ....I'm just having a hard time seeing your mobility in the picture of clay that your trying to sell. But Thats your deal not mine, I'll give you the benefit of the doubt as the bible calls us too.
I don't dispute what you beleive God's opinion is about "performance"> I dispute your definition of performance which is 1) wrong, 2) banal, and 3) counterproductive in music.
The term "Jars of Clay" is from 2 Corinthians 4:7, it says "But we have this treasure in jars of clay to show that this all-surpassing power is from God and not from us."
What else is left to say? I quote scripturem, and you respond in cliches. I explain terminology, but you ignore them for your own closed-minded definition. I commit to seeking guidance from spiritual authority, while you've continued to rely on your own understanding...
"Lean not on your own understanding." Psalm 3:5.
You ignore God's word, and somehow expect me to be convinced of your own selfish arguments...
Christ illustrated this truth by mentioning several devotional items (e.g., the giving of alms, praying, and fasting). He condemned the actions of some who put their worship on display so as to attract the attention of others. He labeled them hypocrites (vv. 2, 5, 16). Jesus went to the very heart of the matter when he put their motives in the spotlight.
Explain to me how you perceive my worship to be hypocritical except that I mentioned the word "perform". Did not I say that i consider myself a "jar of clay" - ordinary, everyday object in which Christ's treasure reside. That is the basic by which I worship God.
Or is this another one of your assertions, like the assertion you made about my salvation?
For the last time: WILL YOU SHOW THIS CONVERSATION TO YOUR PASTOR AND SEEK HIS OPINION? Or are you going to continue you this banality?
Jesus warned about the danger of turning worship into a theatrical production. Take heed, the Lord cautioned, that you do not your righteousness before men, to be seen of them: else you have no reward with your Father who is in heaven (Matthew 6:1).
and by the way Chris is not a professional. He is just like you and I. Hes on the road 6 days a week but always there on Sundays to do worship. as far as being a musician hes just annointed...smeared with Gods love and favor. We who write have to be real with what it is were doing. There are alot of songs that Chris Tomlin has wrote that SUCK! but then come the ones the Father has given that change this world. I pray He gives you those Mav. Seriously
You seriously need to buy a dictionary. Professional simply means getting paid for someething that you do. I too have been a professional musician because I got paid to play some weddings.
I'm sorry if you took offense to the picture your worship team drew in my head. really ...I am...but that was the picture I received Honestly. and my comment about the heart and salvation. that is not pertaining to whether you are or not a christian. that was to what the Father searches for. again this whole thing came down to your drummer doing the best he could but missed it.....it also came down to merging 2 songs as one..He played the groove for the 2nd song on the first.
I took offence at how CONDESCENDING your tone was. It wasn't the fact that you critiqued us. 1. You have some lofty idea of how the song is supposed to sound. We don't do carbon copies, and I don't think Chris Tomlin wants his song performed the way he did it by *everyone* who does it. 2. You haven't critiqued me directly, but our drummner.
Understand that this is not personal. My feelings weren't hurt. But my sense of brotherhood was, because of your MEANSPIRITED comment.
You also said "If it's all "heart", it's just "emotion" which comes and go. And as much as you'd like it to be, it's not worship." boy is that some serious fruit!! Man...if you had the passion to Worship the Lord ....in the way you defend your performance. you would'nt have to copy Chris's songs ...Heavens doors would be wide open to downloads of songs that would change this world. Passion Passion Passion..for the One who had Passion in saving a poor soul like mine.
Indeed I do have passion to worship God. But passion ISN'T THE ONLY THING. If you worship by emotion only, then you are only worship with your heart, as you said. But God tells us to worship with our HEART, SOUL, and MIND.
You take offense..because of your performance. when you perform you look to people to accept what it is you have performed. when you Worship it is to Him and Him only. My Heart crys out to the Father. it is your Passion and Love for the Father that inspires others to join you in Worshiping this Awesome God you proclaim. No faking it till you make it in Gods Kingdom. even the world can spot a fake. the Father said you will know them by their fruits. performance was your fruit.
Again, you still do not have a proper understanding of WHAT THE WORD PERFORM MEANS. IT SIMPLY MEANS TO EXECUTE AN ACTION. I am performing this action of writing a message to you right now. And when I PERFORM WORSHIP, it simply means that I AM EXECUTING THE ACTION OF WORSHIPING GOD. Please, PLEASE, PLEASE look up what hte word means in the dictionary. It won't even take 1 minute.
2. Yet again I must point out, you continue your "Christian Speak" but continue to neglect the words of scripture. How about this, FIND WHERE IN SCRIPTURE THE WORD "PERFORMANCE" IS SPECIFICALLY CONDEMNED.
3. You still havent' responded to my reqest for you to TAKE THIS CONVERSATION TO YOUR PASTOR AND ASK HIS OPINION ABOUT THE THINGS WE WERE DISCUSSION.
PS: I've taken to Capitalizing important concept, to make sure you do not miss it. If you don't read my comments at least read the caps.
"He came to search the Hearts and Minds of Men" He did'nt come to search your performance. When He calls to salvation He was'nt looking for a performance He was looking for a Surrendered Heart. He is the Creator...King of Creativity....Music is a very cool language in itself...every note and chord represents a emotion or a feeling. If not skilled in your instrument you can represent a daisey with a clanging cymbal. To copy someones music is easy.
Indeed he comes to search our hearts, and it is for him to decide if my PERFORMANCE FOR HIM was true, and not your prerogative.
In Summary.
1. Stop trying to make something out of nothing. You are confusing words and definitions, and at this point, it's just sad. You're trying to make this word PERFORMANCE TO SEEM SO EVIL, WHEN IT IS NOT. If you remove this word from musical terminology then you will loose a whole category of ways to describe the actions we take as musicians.
Perhaps the day you accepted the Lord was a "performance" and not a decision of the heart. was aperformance for the congregation watching? you truely have a pride issue. your only 24 you still have plenty of time to hone your craft. I think your doing awesome for a 24 year old. but attitude is everything. and yes I'm so old that I have met a few people. Chris no longer lives in Austin and is now in georgia starting a church With lou Giglio.
God Bless you! sorry I thought you were looking for an honest comment. I didnt say it was bad. for a copy song that someone else took the time to record so it could be easy for us to reproduce and use in worship......well that was what the comment was about.
Sorry....
God Bless
Ps. Once I had the privilege of meeting Buddy Rich...and asked him how he felt about his playing...He answered " I feel good about my playing ..But I still feel I have alot to learn" boy was i ever humbled!
1. Your comment was condescending. There's a way to be honest about critique without sounding like a jerk.
2. You colour your language with "God speak" but not once did you even quote scripture to make your point. You drop names like mad... Oh Martin Smith this, I know Chris Tomlin.. and you have the audacity to call me prideful for saying that i perform in church?
I'm saddened by the thought that you actually did not get anything out this whole thing, and you somehow still think that what you did was right and proper.
Please do me this one favour and take this whole conversation to a pastor, or someone who you consider a spiritual authority and ask their opinion about your words in comparison with mine. I know I may even sound harsh at time, but I at least speak truth. You merely speak in cliches.
"Chris's forte on this song is like Jesus being seen from the rays of a sunrise. you guys make it sound like a old lady chasing a butterfly. "
I just read it again, and I still can't believe how hurtful someone who thinks he is speaking "honesty" can be. Man have you ever missed the meaning of this song.
Mav its in your attitude....your response was to your camera and how it does not portray your performance. there is no performance in worship..... only heart! Music is a language that paints the minds and hearts of people..Thats what this song is about being thankful for His Grace in lyric and song. just because I'm a christian that doesnt perfect me in whatever I choose to have fun in. I still ahve to work at my salvation just like my instrument.
So you took one word in one part of my response and took it to mean pride, when you can't even see the pride in your own criticism? Log in the eye, friend.
I have absolutely no problem calling what I do on stage a performance, and frankly anyone who cries foul about terms indeed need to work out their own salvation first. If you have a problem with the word, I suggest you actually look up its meaning.
My performance is my execution of my worship to God: Christ at work in me to do and will for His pleasure. That to me is much more adept to worship than your definition. If it's all "heart", it's just "emotion" which comes and go. And as much as you'd like it to be, it's not worship.
Anyway, I can't help but bring us back to how this even began. Review your statement to me in the first place and please tell me how you were showing Christ's love to me in that nstance.
Mav...pride is the absolute opposite of where you can find God especially in worship. Miriam Webster Dictionary has 6 definitions for the word Performance. Only 1 is even close to your skewed idea of what it means.
1: a) the execution of an action b) something accomplished : deed , feat
2: the fulfillment of a claim, promise, or request : implementation
3: a) the action of representing a character in a play b) a public presentation or exhibition
Notice your definition is 3rd in the list...
