Mark Smith is a moron. His opponent in the debate had very strong point. Mark only had one. We let 35-year old idiots vote, so why can't smart teens vote? If a teenager is misinformed about politics, chances are they won't vote any because of there lack of interest. I'm fifteen. I work. I pay into social security and medicare. It makes no sense why I can't vote.
Teens live on allowances because child labor laws force them to. Get rid of child labor laws (or at least amend the ages they affect), allow teens to work, vote, move out, etc. It's simple.
I predict that the United Kingdom will lower the Voting Age to 16 after the next election that is this year, so are you going to let us beat you to it?.
One: There should be NO voting age. If a kid is willing to get up and vote than no one has the right to stop them. Parents making their kids vote for the parents interest is not a valid argument against it.
Two: Maybe if we didn't treat teenagers like toddlers, they could get jobs and enter into contracts.
Three: I find South Park to make more sense with their views than Glenn Beck. How many adults blindly follow Glenn Beck or Rush's words?
@UnschoolingEagle i do think there should be some sort of voting age, because you don't want parents to force their children to vote for a certain person. then they are just double voting
@RusNad That would be illegal and if it was found out than action would be taken. Though most children even as adults follow their parents political ideologies anyway.
@UnschoolingEagle i don't think that it would be possible to effectively act against that... obviously parental influence is acceptable and it exists but at a young age people would not be able to form their own political view
@RusNad My six year old cousin has a legitimate political view that she formed from her own experience and from the ideas of those around her... which is how most people (adults) form their political views. To me that is legitimate. Why should she be silenced because people don't think her opinion is worthy enough? As for parents forcing their children to vote I still don't see it as a legitimate reason. Most peoples votes are based on what FOX, CNN, or their parents tell them anyway.
@UnschoolingEagle wow your cousin is smart :), congrats. and her opinion is worthy. but obviously she is well above the average 6 year old's IQ. and if she is willing to vote, then that speaks for itself about having an interest in politics. you're right about the media and parental influence too. maybe there should be some kind of test. plenty of adults do not have legitimate political views. it would spark a lot more debate too.
@RusNad Heh thanks, I mean obviously if unable to read the person could not vote (unless it is a handicap such as blindness so comprehend would be a better word than read) this would basically bar most younger children anyway. I just think there shouldn't be a voting age... if parents want to be dicks well there isn't much we could do.... but in a society with no voting age I think there would be more respect for children in general thus making it less likely parents would take advantage.
That Mark Smith guy is making faulty arguments... "most 16 year olds live on allowances" most young people have to live off their parents because they are institutionally and culturally barred from doing otherwise. Do you know how hard it would be as a 16 year old to get a work permit and a job that pays more than minimum wage to support oneself?
How come American business is allowed to market products directly to American youth? We are more than happy to allow businesses to profit from our youth but not willing to give them equal rights?
We should get back to the founding fathers and how they thought of the voting process...

I support the idea of lowering the voting age to 16, but I bet only ~25% of 16-17 year olds will actually vote.

The anti-youth guy is ridiculous. Love how he brings up North Korea, Iran, etc even when it has absolutely no relevance.
