From Leonard Cohen's beautiful song: "Joan of Arc": And who are you? She sternly spoke To the one beneath the smoke. Why, I am fire, he replied, And I love your solitude, I love your pride. Then fire, make your body cold, I'm going to give you mine to hold, Saying this she climbed inside To be his one, to be his only bride. And deep into his fiery heart, He took the dust of Joan of Arc. And high above the wedding guests He hung the ashes of her wedding dress.
@LindaOftheRose1 So how did she really die? Did she burn away into ashes, or did they take her off the stake when she was beyond recognition?
I can't believe the church was once this way... How could they have been so barbaric. It's nice to know that we don't live in the Dark Ages of the church, but even now we haven't progressed all too much...
I find it really stupid that the church thought they were doing the will of God...
@Dzzy123 those people attacked in the end because they recognized joan as a saint and the church as barbaric, the guards had the weapons and were fighting to control the crowd.
On this day (May 30), 580 years ago, Jehanne la Pucelle was burned alive at the stake in Rouen, France. May her soul be at peace and her memory live forever.
Absolutely stunning. How can people be so mistaken in their recognition of goodness and evil ? Most moving. I wish I could feel we have moved on and no longer make mistakes, b ut mankind is still flawed and terrified at worst and uncomfortable at best with intrinsic purity of thought and action. Most thought-provoking.

it's hard to believe the human race capable of such barbaric behavior.
