Hi Scott: I just sent you a picture/music montage of Shirley's single of this great song to be approved as a video response. The single is different than the music videos because there is some great whistling in the middle. I think those who tune in to this song on your website will also enjoy the slightly different version, thks, Scot
@neonskyline1 Although I like Grace Jones as an outstanding character in pop music, I agree: She can`t sing like Shirley Bassey. I have an old 70s record with her dicofox-version of "La Vie en rose", where she sings quite good. Today she has some problems of holding a note. However, I think Shirley Bassey likes her style- at least she sang "Slave to the rythm" in her Bassey-Style.
I've been a Yello fan for many years, the are superb at what they do, and featuring Shirley Bassey it's just awesome. Now that's what I call a real singer, she takes my breath away.
A Real Singer, not like these Zombies and Screaming Robots like Amy Winehouse, Lady Gaga, and Rhiana. Yello is incredible also. Those Europeans sure can create good music.
this and "Hawaiian Chance" are my personal favorites by Yello. they rule, and it's a good thing I saw Ferris Bueller's Day Off, otherwise I never would have heard of them
I'd like to hear this on some high end audio equipment. Yello are are very good at creating sonic excellence and are the masters of ambience & emotion. And Ms Bassey's voice, well what can I say. "Breathtaking"
Best female singer of an entire era, and who would ever have thought she'd hook up with Boris & Dietrich? I am hoping Jennifer Hudson becomes the Shirley Bassey of this era.
This is probably a unique situation in pop music history, where two versions of the same song (this one and the other with Billy MacKenzie's vocals) represent perfection. Just fantastic!
Man, what a fantastic trio. I loved yello and this truly is divine, I love this so much, haunting and just cool. If I were a film maker then this would be one track I used.
Billy was not by any means a rock style singer, and his version is by the best, a few have covered it but none compare, Shirls version is however a great version!
She remains amazing, putting the Bassey stamp on any song she sings, generally brilliant, occasionally over ambitious and cheezy but ALWAYS BASSEY! She make every song a BIG number.
you should check out Billy Mackenzies own version of this track...he wrote the lyrics for Sb(and it's him you hear on the bv's on this)..but imho he out sings dame Shirlely...a hard feat yes but he does so,,,,,great song though :)
@WillCrazie no, that's your opinion. Not fact. I think he's more flashy vocally, does more riffs and runs(which Shirley never does). But it is a different interpretation of the music. He goes for the openly aching and pleading, she goes for a dark and haunting vibe. That is all. I don't hear anything that really stands out as objectively better. Now, if you prefer one style to the other, fine. He's obviously a rock style singer, and sang it that way. But whatever you prefer is not nec. "better".
@747johnz yes, she is. She has a new album out as of last December. Called The Performance. She looks 20 years younger than her 73 years, and her voice is more powerful than any 20 year old belters. Check her out! I recommend her performance of The Living Tree from a couple of years ago, and Pink's Get The Party Started!
i remember seeing this on Top of the Pops on the BBC, in august 1987. I think it reached somewhere around number 54 ! all the while the great British music buying public where spending their hard earned on Rick Astley, (who?), Five Star (What?), Then Jerico, (where?)and Michael Jackson (?)
"The Rhythm Divine" was a concert appearance that was aired on Bravo in the late 90's. It ha snever been seen again it was wonderful she did the propeller heads revolving songs and everything, huge set, what happened to that where is our history going?
@noescom ...not totally correct there!...he wrote the lyrics and infact recorded the Associates version before Bassey....so there you go keith2908....right after all.
I once read the Yello guys walked in the studio and there she was already, invited to sing this song, they said let s get started, they listened to the one and only track the engineer recorded before they arrived and this is it...it s the vocal track you hear now, one take! A class act and voice from another era, long before instant noodle stardom a la american idol.
This is both incredible vocal performance and an amazing song. Yello really had their strong moments. Third of June is one of the best pop songs I've ever heard.
WDET in Detroit turned me on to Essential. I have played The Rhythm Divine on some of the largest sound systems in Detroit, as the bass has excellent extension. People would ask who that was singing and Bond always was associated.
SIMPLY AWESOME. One of my all time favorites. The incredibly powerful voice of Dame Shirley, pitch perfect, hauntingly beautiful. thanks for posting.
because your mind automatically associates the two
but try to listen for a long time only songs by her who are not on the bond film soundtracks, and noone of goldfinger&co, and you'll probably have another opinion ;)
absolutely a favourite of mine, not heard it in years, such a great performance by miss dame shirley bassey. co-written with yello by billy mackenzie (he of associates fame) who provided backing vocals and chosen by siouxsie sioux as one of her collectors choice on the liz kershaw show on radio one back in the day (summer 88?)... gosh, what a lot of information!!! LOVE IT, AND HER, AND THEM, AND SIOUXSIE AND BILLY... going to lie down in a darkened room now!! wx FABULOUS
Azt hiszem, hogy ugy lehetne forditani: Szentseges ritmus... Nagyon egyszeru szoveg, nem kell hogy forditsd. Az egeszben van valami ami nagyon muveszies, es az ami megfog teged.
