  • Classy...

  • What a voice, Divine.

  • This was always a favorite song of mine. It never occurred to me to look for a video until now. How excellent that there is one here :)

  • what a voice!!!! briliant!!

  • Written by Billy McKenzie, who also sings backing.

  • Hi Scott: I just sent you a picture/music montage of Shirley's single of this great song to be approved as a video response. The single is different than the music videos because there is some great whistling in the middle. I think those who tune in to this song on your website will also enjoy the slightly different version, thks, Scot

  • Shirley Bassey! A diva on electronic music!

    Divine!

  • Great song, Shirley sublime as usual, God she needs a dresser though.....

  • @brokeback1945 it was an 80s look. She has impeccable taste.

  • There aren't 'words'.......

  • great!!!

  • 22 years ago was my first "breathtaking" because this song, today I just can`t stop listening, she takes my breath away.....

  • wow......what a voice.....

  • Just a fabulous track featuring a very classy Lady.

  • i'm speechless.

  • sorry can't remember when Grace Jones sang like that :)

  • @neonskyline1 Although I like Grace Jones as an outstanding character in pop music, I agree: She can`t sing like Shirley Bassey. I have an old 70s record with her dicofox-version of "La Vie en rose", where she sings quite good. Today she has some problems of holding a note. However, I think Shirley Bassey likes her style- at least she sang "Slave to the rythm" in her Bassey-Style.

  • Great to heat Shirley again, the diva from Wales. Thank you.

  • I've been a Yello fan for many years, the are superb at what they do, and featuring Shirley Bassey it's just awesome. Now that's what I call a real singer, she takes my breath away.

  • cudowna Shirley....

  • A Real Singer, not like these Zombies and Screaming Robots like Amy Winehouse, Lady Gaga, and Rhiana. Yello is incredible also. Those Europeans sure can create good music.

  • I love Shirley, A Classy Diva....with a voice so Devine.

  • A song that will last forever... one of the best ever produced...

  • camp as custard creams....love it...should have been a bond theme....wonder if she does this song when she plays live....yello smooth as ever

  • Yello - seit Jahrzenten außergewöhnlich und auch und gerade in der heutigen Zeit der reinste Ohrenzauber...

  • @nebojsa135 pozdrav i tebi!

  • goosebumps

  • Einfach fantastisch !!!

  • I'd like to hear this on some high end audio equipment. Yello are are very good at creating sonic excellence and are the masters of ambience & emotion. And Ms Bassey's voice, well what can I say. "Breathtaking"

  • @sassteve1971 it will make you brake down and cry.

she also sung this song on the buriel of her own daughter, this is a mega strong woman.

  • @sassteve1971 I've heard this on Linn LP12 and Isobariks and can tell you it's effin awesome

  • @sassteve1971

Believe me, it sounds DAMN good.

  • talk of town ... thats her :)

  • Phenomenal song and voice—this is what true talent and artistry is made of, boys and girls.

  • her voice is mezmorizing'' warm and cuddly but aso chillin

  • klasse song , unvergänglich.yello ist spitze

  • klasse song , unvergänglich.yello ist spitze

  • Best female singer of an entire era, and who would ever have thought she'd hook up with Boris & Dietrich? I am hoping Jennifer Hudson becomes the Shirley Bassey of this era.

  • imho, first version - with Billy Mackenzie voice - was much better

  • This is probably a unique situation in pop music history, where two versions of the same song (this one and the other with Billy MacKenzie's vocals) represent perfection. Just fantastic!

  • @demisn I agree, both versions are beyond amazing

  • what a class...

  • just unforgettable!!!!

  • one of the best of times

  • one of the best of times

  • you guys read my my mind, dont need to write anything

  • Man, what a fantastic trio. I loved yello and this truly is divine, I love this so much, haunting and just cool. If I were a film maker then this would be one track I used.

Who wants to be in my movie ?

  • i can never get enough of this voice

  • Shirley Bassey's answer to Grace Jones' 'Slave to the Rhythm'

  • @petershaman ..I truly agree, they both sound great, though in their own right

  • doess anybody know where i can find chords to this, or sheet music, but preferably chords....???

    Thanks y'all

  • what a voice!

  • mistrzostwo ...

  • Shirley's version tops everything, even the original version by Billy

  • Billy was not by any means a rock style singer, and his version is by the best, a few have covered it but none compare, Shirls version is however a great version!

  • Masterpiece. Dame Shirley lights it up.

  • Simply a stunning collaboration for sure. Still haunting after all these years. awesome.

  • Quality song writer and singer from Dundee

  • She remains amazing, putting the Bassey stamp on any song she sings, generally brilliant, occasionally over ambitious and cheezy but ALWAYS BASSEY! She make every song a BIG number.

  • ... a perfect voice. Beautifullllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllll

  • Stupenda......

  • Yello are a much underrated duo and I have always loved this track.

  • you should check out Billy Mackenzies own version of this track...he wrote the lyrics for Sb(and it's him you hear on the bv's on this)..but imho he out sings dame Shirlely...a hard feat yes but he does so,,,,,great song though :)

  • @WillCrazie no he doesn't, but thanks anyway.

  • @Rosannasfriend oh yes he does!! :)

  • @WillCrazie no, that's your opinion. Not fact. I think he's more flashy vocally, does more riffs and runs(which Shirley never does). But it is a different interpretation of the music. He goes for the openly aching and pleading, she goes for a dark and haunting vibe. That is all. I don't hear anything that really stands out as objectively better. Now, if you prefer one style to the other, fine. He's obviously a rock style singer, and sang it that way. But whatever you prefer is not nec. "better".

  • @Rosannasfriend Billy MacKenzie was definitely NOT a "rock style singer"!

  • @MisAnnThorpe I don't think he was a rock singer, but he sings in more of the rock-style than Shirley. I stand by my comments.

  • This song came out when I was 14. I still love it!

  • @TheMariposaloca wish I was 14 when it came out

  • So beautiful - I get chills every time I listen to this.

  • Воспоминания юности навеяло :) Потрясающе!!!

  • A timeless masterpiece!

  • Great voice.....this is music

  • Billy MacKenzie wrote this. Wonderfull

  • 3 Uhr 33, eine Prärie in der Pampa, 888 Watt, Veuve Cliquot und Dein Liebling - Gääääääänsehaut pur... ;-)

  • piekny glos... piekna piosenka, dzis takich nie slysze......:(

  • Awe... !

  • The 1st time I heard this song was around 20+ years ago... I am still listening to it...

  • @747johnz its awesome!

  • @Rosannasfriend : She actually sounds like a deep tone soprano... something like Emma Shaplin but much more deeper tone... is she still alive??

  • @747johnz yes, she is. She has a new album out as of last December. Called The Performance. She looks 20 years younger than her 73 years, and her voice is more powerful than any 20 year old belters. Check her out! I recommend her performance of The Living Tree from a couple of years ago, and Pink's Get The Party Started!

  • @Rosannasfriend Will certainly do mate, Cheers...

  • @747johnz ~ Of course she's alive! Anyone with a PC could check that info without looking foolish.

  • simply superb

  • OFF THE ALBUM STELLA.....

  • @Dayle68Hill The album is ''One Second''.

  • @vorvor66 sorry your right- too many albums that are so great i get confused sometimes which song is on what album thanks, now i can find it! haha

  • AWESOME.HUGSS

  • Absolutely no need for autotune here

  • Perfection needs no comments !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Thank for posting. One of my all time faves!

  • This should also have been a James Bond theme!!

  • That's music

  • What a discovered gem.

  • I 'm younger 25 years!What a song!

  • what a voice!!!!

  • Perfect !

  • This reaches distant shores in my imagination - just in another league. Thank you so much for posting it.

  • Maravilhosa... divina!!!

  • I was 18 when this came out. Oh!!! what a time I had...If only I could afford one of those new time machines thay have in Argos...lol

  • i remember seeing this on Top of the Pops on the BBC, in august 1987. I think it reached somewhere around number 54 ! all the while the great British music buying public where spending their hard earned on Rick Astley, (who?), Five Star (What?), Then Jerico, (where?)and Michael Jackson (?)

  • wugga wugga

  • So sorrowful..yet so uplifting

  • "The Rhythm Divine" was a concert appearance that was aired on Bravo in the late 90's. It ha snever been seen again it was wonderful she did the propeller heads revolving songs and everything, huge set, what happened to that where is our history going?

  • I ♥ THIS SONG!!!!!!!!

    amaaaazing

  • one of the best song ever......

  • An amazing song, but I still prefer the original that was written and sung by The Associates.

  • @keith2908 Actually, this version is the original. Billy MacKenzie (the lead singer of the Associates) did provide backing vocals though.

  • @noescom ...not totally correct there!...he wrote the lyrics and infact recorded the Associates version before Bassey....so there you go keith2908....right after all.

  • @evvia I read that he wrote it for Bassey originally though, but sang it himself first.

  • @evvia thanks evvia i knew i was right.

  • Oh, happy teen memories...

  • WOW!

  • Beautiful! Beautiful!!!!!!!!!!!

  • I once read the Yello guys walked in the studio and there she was already, invited to sing this song, they said let s get started, they listened to the one and only track the engineer recorded before they arrived and this is it...it s the vocal track you hear now, one take! A class act and voice from another era, long before instant noodle stardom a la american idol.

  • Tru or not it is fitting...so I say Tru indeed

  • the legendary shirly bassey!!! brilliant!!!

  • The type of Voice that will give you goose-bumps and make u feel small.....

    Fantastic singer :D

  • this is decent

  • This is both incredible vocal performance and an amazing song. Yello really had their strong moments. Third of June is one of the best pop songs I've ever heard.

  • WDET in Detroit turned me on to Essential. I have played The Rhythm Divine on some of the largest sound systems in Detroit, as the bass has excellent extension. People would ask who that was singing and Bond always was associated.

  • You Tube is fantastic, and this is another great performance by Shirley I'd not seen before!! Thank you.

  • Her best song ever. Shame that it was largely ignored. 5*

  • WHAT A VOICE!

  • Loads better than the Propellerheads collaboration in my view, but sadly Yello's song seems largely ignored.

  • SIMPLY AWESOME. One of my all time favorites. The incredibly powerful voice of Dame Shirley, pitch perfect, hauntingly beautiful. thanks for posting.

  • It makes me tingle like a long distant dream finally remembered.

  • Perfect for a 007 movie theme.

  • I had the same thought.

  • Why does everything Dame Shirley sings sound like a Bond Film theme? Excellent!

  • because your mind automatically associates the two

but try to listen for a long time only songs by her who are not on the bond film soundtracks, and noone of goldfinger&co, and you'll probably have another opinion ;)

  • absolutely a favourite of mine, not heard it in years, such a great performance by miss dame shirley bassey. co-written with yello by billy mackenzie (he of associates fame) who provided backing vocals and chosen by siouxsie sioux as one of her collectors choice on the liz kershaw show on radio one back in the day (summer 88?)... gosh, what a lot of information!!! LOVE IT, AND HER, AND THEM, AND SIOUXSIE AND BILLY... going to lie down in a darkened room now!! wx FABULOUS

  • best singer EVER !!!! a divine voice.THE voice..

  • Dionne is Whitney's 2nd cousin.

  • Yello Mello, Bassey Classy, Thanks for the post.

  • yup, they cut the whistling part from the middle :(

  • it just takes you away,,,LOVE IT

  • what a well produced song, 1st class

  • Isn't she the aunt of Witney Houston???

  • no, another great singer--Dionne Warwick is her aunt , :)

  • Great SONG and her voice... oh lala, I've

    always been a fan!!

  • she has a great voice too bad she doesn't do more bond songs

  • Am I the only one who thinks they cut a piece out of the middle of this song? I remember it as being longer.

  • yeah they have , on the album "one second" its around 5 mins long :(((

definately better with the album version !

  • sounds like it could had been a james bond theme song
