What I loved about the score of Superman Returns is how Director Bryan Singer and Composer John Ottman made sure that Superman Returns INCLUDES John Williams themes.
Actually this is from Superman The Movie, and the cue's title is The Fortress of Solitude, and Ottman used and mixed it with other bits and pieces of Williams' original and beautiful music. It's definetaly not Ottman's, he couldn't write music like this in a million years. That's the genius of Maestro John Williams.
I'm fully aware of where this music comes from originally but the score for superman returns is credited to John Ottman. In SR this music is heard just after Superman saves the plane from crashing.
In Superman The Movie it is heard during the scene where Jor-El tells Kal-El of his Kryptonian heritage building to the moment when we see Christopher Reeve for the first time in the Superman costume. He then flies out of the fortress before it cuts to Metropolis where the cue ends.
Correct. Still, this music belongs to John Williams, who originally composed it and called it The Fortress of Solitude which is heard in the movie at the exact place where you described it, and Ottman hardly even changed anything about it, he used it in his score in it's entirity, making many people falsly believe that this is his own writing. It is not. I completely agree with you though, the score of Superman Returns (as original as it is), is credited to John Ottman.
That's true, but it's misguiding that you upload a cue recorded and arranged by a composer, that's actually written almost entirely by another. Why don't you upload Fortress of Solitude by John Williams too, if you own many albums of his? Just asking, not trying to pick a fight with you.
I started uploading SR music because most of it has never been released(I got hold of it when the full score was leaked) . The STM version of this cue has been widely available for quite a while now, so can be heard elsewhere.
I actually uploaded 2 other pieces of SR music but they were taken down by YT. I have no idea why they left this one alone.
I have to disagree when you say that Ottman was deliberately trying to trick people into thinking it was his original music.
SR is basically one long homage to STM. The opening titles are pratically the same, Brandon Routh is doing an impression of Reeve, there are countless references to Donner's film.
In the lead up to the film's release Bryan Singer was talking constantly about the connections to STM.
It's the same with the music, they wanted people (fans anyway) to get the references.
I never said that Ottman was trying to trick the audience into believing that the music was his, because I'm fully aware that Bryan Singer wanted pay tribute to Donner's classic film, and one of the strongest part of his film is John Williams' unforgettable music. So I know that Ottman was supposed to copy or use the original themes of Williams, because it was part of the deal.
What I was trying to say was that it was false to present this piece of music of Ottman's as if he'd written it, because as a matter of fact this particular cue was written by John Williams, although it contains some arrangements that makes it a little bit different from the original. i just wanted to be clear on that, I'm not arguing the fact that it was the filmmaker's intention to pay tribute to STM.
I have to correct myself. I wrote: "Ottman hardly even changed anything about it, he used it in his score in it's entirity, making many people falsly believe that this is his own writing. " - so in a way, I did write this, but i didn't mean that he has bad intentions, I agree with you, that this was the filmmakers' purpose.
Like I said, originally I was meaning to post many cues from SR, so this was just going to be one of many. The point of uploading this one in particular was to give fans the opportunity to hear Ottman's re-jigged version of Williams' cue. I would've thought that anyone looking for this music would be aware of it's origins, so it's only accurate to point out that this is the Ottman version.
I understand your point. I'm glad that you've uploaded this and all the other tracks, because Ottman didn't ruin the original music, he let it be triumphant as it is and left it's original orchestrations, since you wouldt be a fool to rewrite Beethoven's 9th symphony. As long as people are aware that this particular piece (and some other major themes) is not Ottman's music, but the slightly rearranged version of Williams', there is no misunderstanding non whatsoever.
I can't believe they didn't put this on the original soundtrack release. Personally this is my favorite part of the entire score, it's so enthusiastic and triumphant, I can't help but jump up and start air-conducting to it.
I think it's "You're Not One of Them." It's the part when he flies straight up through the clouds as Jor-El is speaking as a V.O., right? It also may be from the 2 disc extended soundtrack that wasn't released.
yeah i wish i wasnt combing through the whole internets for more than a year now to find this superman 2 CD special extended soundtrack anywhere if someone could help me i would be very grateful!!
hey does anyone know if they did a new version of the "love theme"? i know there is a very short piece of it when he flies lois back up to the tower after the interview, but is there any longer piece of an updated "love theme" from superman?
I don't think they recorded an entire new version of it. The theme appears briefly in the score, but there isn't a 5 minute long piece like in the John Williams score.
This cool to hear. I know that there are other scores that have not been released but have made there way around the internet. I saw a scene from Superman IV with Returns music. I also love how it combines the ending to "The Fortress of Solitude" with the a mix of the main march.
I'm not sure to be honest. The entire score leaked online a while back, there were rumours that Ottman himself did it because the full score will probably never be released.
I got the entire score at some point over the last year or so off the internet. It was available for download on the net, there were links to it on a fan message board. Not sure if it is still around. I will get back to you if I can find out where it is online. I'm also planning on uploading some more on ytube. The full score is great and I have listened to it loads.
I must have this composition for my collection. Would you mind sending me a link to where I may download this?

...I am more than aware that the original themes were composed by John Williams in 1978.
The point is that this particular recording was made under the direction of John Ottman.
I own many albums of film scores by John Williams, including the full one for Superman The Movie.
Stop being nitpicky. If you want to reupload this and put Williams' name next to it then you are more than welcome.
