Though born and bred in K.C., MO.; It was September 1974 and just moved from Omaha, NE. to Washington D.C. aka Chocolate City and the vanilla suburbs. Driving my 63' yellow Volkswagon with the one speaker AM radio. First song by Commodores I've ever heard. Said to myself, "I likes this town"! Trained to be a life insurance salesman. Solicited to Federal and District government employees. Net $700 a week! Not bad for 20 years old. GOD has been good to me.
WOW! The Commodores back then was a regional group, summers in the early to mid-70s my siblings and I were 'sent' south (NC) and we would hear songs like this and some Bar-Kays from my cousins, we would buy the 45s and 'import' them back to New York. Brings back memories of the parties in the community centers in those small towns where my mom is from and the girls that used to crush on me because I was from the 'big city.
Still remember being taught how to do the Bump. Man those were the days back in '74. hmmm. Not forgetting the bell bottoms and the high heel boots. And I had an afro hair. Wow
@abbeymanila Bump is the dance when you whip the side of your butt to your other partners butt and do it again while you reverse.Done this one summer on a party at our hood wearing an bell bottom jeans and a long sleeves with big cuffs that were pulled up to the middle hehehehe......
Motown - how in the hell could you hold on to this album from 1972 for two long years.? Didn't you realize this would top the charts immediately upon release. I think Berry Gordy hesitated on the Funk! Man the Commodores would've topped the charts way before EWF, OHIO PLAYERS, KOOL AND THE GANG, PARLIAMENT/FUNKADELIC etc. Instead he waited til' other groups was Funkin' radio.
Lordee! Lordee! Church is in session. Hell yeaaaaaaaah. Lay your hands on me Commodores, Lay off that pop shet you got into latah on. This the real stuff!!
now this is what pure, real, and raw funk is all about!! and it came from tuskeegee, alabama on top off that!! these guys put their foot in this chunk of funk!!!
@joussef911 yes yes yes jossef "-) When you see your shoes during those days, its embarrasing. hahaha. High Heels are the IN thing, and yes, from Glenmore and Ang Tibay hahaha. Love the 70s! The whole of 70s.
@brightchance Wild Cherry actually was not a bad band. They were real funk, the one song they got famous for doesn't express that. Check too hot to trot or Electrified Funk. They were a group of bad ass musicians
@chiknfulio I agree U Know Their song ok but I listen 2 (finally)and I was ___________________(help me out)they were more then THE SONG "Play your funky music, play funky music til' you die" an underrated LP totally.
I wore out my LP playing this song when I was Teenager. Those were the good times.
