I can imagine with her musicianship, she didn't suffer her fools gladly when it came to her accompanists. They better have their ish together. Ms. McCrae didn't play.
i just "found" carmen on jazzradio the other day. wow, what a talented, great singer she was. i bet it was amazing seeing her on condert. RIP, dear carmen ...
For me, it's a mistake to consider there were Three Ladies Of Jazz. There were four: Billie Holiday, Ella Fitzgerald, Sarah Vaughan and Carmen McRae. Her power to translate songs into emotions is bigger than Billie's, and, if her voice is not as soft as Ella's or as powerful as Sarah's, her emotional strenght has no pair among other jazz singers.
@kololando That's what I have told since their later years. You are definitely right. Carmen' s most underestimated Jazz musician ever. No singer can approach Carmen McRae in interpretation. No other singer can't sing as subtle as Carmen did. It's a simple truth which American listeners don't notice. I have been always impatient with that. She is absolutely greatest !!!!!!
@kololando No U R wrong, Carmen I adore this Lady, BUT, no one will ever convery the feelings that Ms. Holiday did. Yes she was emotive, and could truly sing. BUT, no "BILLIE" was the conveyer of emotion.

Man, I wish I could have met her, and heard her live. Oh well at least I can see her on Youtube, that's the next best thing.

Good performance anyway. She must be around 65 years old here. I like her voice best in the 60's, but this is also very good.
