The problem is that everyone around her (government, media, councilors) her whole life kept saying the mantra that going to college is the best thing she could do, so don´t worry about the cost especially if she went to a decent school. Just take out a loan and everything will work out fine after graduation. She did just that and now has a worthless sociology degree, and a lifetime of debt slavery.
The education I received at my junior college was better than the "prestigious" four-year institution I transferred to finished my degree. Support your local universities.
@biped19 I had the same experience. Much better, way smaller classes, students actually cared about school, and it was easier to get questions answered directly from the professors. When I went to finish my engineering degree at a "prestigious" college, the classes were huge, like over 200 people, the professors weren't any better, and many of the students just didn't care, they were just there like it was a continuation of high school.
I'm with Ana on this one. It's fine to go to college, if you want to and you think it will benefit you personally, but you really do have to have a good plan for it. I'm planning to go to college in a couple years, I know it'll be costly, so I'm planning to go to my local state uni (which is my dream school anyway) and have my parents pay for it during the school years while I work part-time over the summers. I want to go full-time and work hard but have fun and strike a balance. That's the key.
Here in Australia, the best unis are public, and private are left for those who didn't have the marks to get into the public ones. Everyone also gets interest free loans from the government, which you then pay a percentage of your income after reaching a certain threshold. Uni fees are not only capped but subsidised, because here in the land down under we truely believe in education for all.
Please join the move to oust Dr. Amy Gutmann, at the UNIVERSITY OF PENNSYLVANIA, from her position as president, because in this economy, money is a terrible thing to waste.

Blame it on the corporations who keep sending jobs overseas or eliminating them altogether.
3:09 True that. Also - undergrad education REALLY is not that much better at Ivy League schools than most other respectable universities. Just take a look at their OpenCourseware sites and judge for yourself. I'm attending a Canadian university studying Bioc and let me tell you - my profs are unreallly awesome at what they do I really can't imagine the education being any better. For Grad studies though the school can make a difference - all to do with endowment/funding, prof. interests. ETC
Move to Australia. Government supported education where they give you 1% interest loans and you pay them back once you get a job with your degree. Oh and its taken out before tax so you wont have to pay tax on the money you earn to pay it off.
@gamerfromcanada The average UCLA student spent 30k+ a year so for a 4 year degree even if you working its easy to have 80k once you go onto go for your masters, med school, law school ect its easy to get to 200k
@Tony007corp Woahh, where did u get the 30k/year? I go to UCLA and my tuition (aka education fee) is only about 11k/year (this does not include ANY rent or outside bills as that is not "tuition")
If you're going to take out $200,000 in student loan debts, make sure you're going to be making money and not picking a bullshit major like Art, fucking morons. How do these retards manage to get into college in the first place?
@MaicoMoon The problem is the same people who say go to school also say do something you love so then you have people paying 200k to learn to dance or to be a film maker or some other small long shot field of work
One of the only reasons why I love California. My local Cal State U charges only 8,000 per year and I can live at home and its not a bad school either.
I hope she manages to find a job that pays more than salary given to a high school grad who's had 5 years of experience. Because having a high school grad manage recent college grads is ridiculous!!
Holy shit!! This girl has to pay the same amount as an Apartment Fee in New York every month for this shit!! DAMN! And my parents want me to go back to college just because I can't find a job! Shit, I'd rather be a poor High School graduate than an up-to-my-eyeballs-in-debt college graduate STILL without a job!!
@ObserversEyes Im pretty sure you can.. you will just have terrible credit for 7 years and you will never be able to sign anything in your name, like a lease for example... thats why people dont file
Student loans are generally non-dischargeable debt which means that they are still owed after bankruptcy. There are hardship exceptions, but this is difficult to obtain. One example is being disabled.
My source: Lawyers.com - student loans in bankruptcy.
@UnhappyDreamer That's what I'm doing. It works because the one I plan to attend is the one I wanted to go to. I'm also going to apply for the scholarship that the school offers first (merit), but if I don't get it, I have that paying plan as a backup (between my family paying for it during the school years and me working part-time over the summers that should take care of most of the debt). I also want to take a year off before pursuing higher degrees which are offered at the same school. :) <3
I hear now a day s a Bachelors Degree is like High School Degree. When I learned that I figured that it really doesnt matter what school I go to as long as if I get my masters I pick a better school and kick ass there. Right now Im a good, small school. Its accredited and everything and its only about $5-6 thousand a semester. And thats for tuition and everything. UNC Pembroke.
Im getting my bachelor of arts degree and maybe masters degree later. But i wouldnt if it cost me fucking 200k. You can get so much free education online these days. Especially in this field where people want skills, not a paper with your name on it.
Ana:People unwilling to help pay for education? Eh, what? Don't we get taxed to send people's children to public schools? Is that not paying for education?
And It's tough for me to feel totally sympathetic for this lady. For one, millions of Americans are in the same situation she's in. Maybe not 200K deep but thousands of dollars, nonetheless. Secondly, what do you go to school for that cost 200K for as an undergrad? If she knew should couldn't afford this school, then take up other colleges.
I'd help a girl who shows her tits pay off her tickets, but I wouldn't help a girl who needs to pay off her school loans. Why? Because she doesn't appeal to my interest. Sometimes women get exactly what they deserve.
Heh, 200,000k? I did that standing on my head! Mine was almost 500k, but there is a little secret when it comes to government loans! Basicly, you find a good accountant (may run a bill up to $5,000) and he can pretty much get rid of ALL your student debt through loopholes in the system. I settled with a $5k accountant bill, and $600 in loans! So, I had a debt of 500K, and turned it into $5,600! LOL Also, everything you do that is nice or costs $, you can have a % deducted from your loan.
Well Ana, I will say that there are others ways to have less debt or pay it off without struggling, but just saying basically follow the money isn't the best advice IMO. Not everyone wants those degrees like business or whatnot, if I majored in something just for the money and wasn't interested my college life would be worse. And also whatever degree you get, you can make it work if you really want to and try
I have a degree in Biochemistry. How is it possible to amass that much loan debt? I'm sure it is, but don't know how. Would you stay in school ten years? I went to a UC school, so maybe that explains the cost difference. When I graduated, I had $3000 in loan obligations or .15% of hers.
A couple of years before you need to go to University, move to Europe, naturalise (e.g. in The Netherlands) and go to school there. The government will pay you to go to university, and the overall prices are probably a lot lower. (And quality of education is just as good, unless you compare it to like fucking Harvard.) I mean I'll end up with quite a bit of debt, but I'll have no problem paying it off whatsoever.
How do u accumulate that much debt? Did she receive no financial aid? In that case wouldn't her parents have enough to pay for it. Plus sociology? What a waste.
@GJNCA In my home country as well as others, the student never even has to hear the word "tuition" (except for very exclusive private schools), there is also a student grant and a student loan to get, in order to cover the cost of study material and living expenses during time of study, but for this part one has to declare one's resources to prove that one really needs the grant, and if the grant is not enough one can apply for the loan as well.
Even at a high-end college she shouldn't be eating the full price tag at a private school unless she was absurdly rich going in and got no aid. Also, if she was going to study sociology she should have waited for grad school to go to Northwestern. she could have gone four, then two for a masters, and still kept it under 200k if she went to a public 4-year. There's a lot of people out there who should get financial help before this girl.
Lol... horny losers paying cleavage girl money for having tits... yeah, it's pretty sad. Some men are so easily manipulated and so incredibly easy to entertain.
if you can get into $200K of debt going to college in the USA there is something seriously wrong with that country. I can only assume she has been irresponsible in getting into that amount of debt like Ana said she should have gone to a cheaper college
@UK1774 not necessarily, top universities here charge in excess of 30~40k per academic year, so it's quite possible she's got into debt just from normal tuition expenses. Which is of course sad, and not right, but that's the US for you. :(
@LegendaryAsshole She probably went to an Ivy or top rank college that cost 35-45k. Four to five years could definitely put you in debt for 200k if you had no scholarships or grants.
Look, college is way too expensive. There's no real doubt, but there's also nothing wrong with going to a state school. I went to a school that ran almost 200k for 4 years. Even with a nice scholarship and help from my parents, it was completely NOT WORTH IT.
You can go to a school for half that price and get a perfectly good education, a good job right out of school, and/or entry into a grad program. Private college is too much. You'll thank me later.
the question is, why should anyone donate for your crappy show featuring nothing but premature nonsense comments ???? But luckily for you guys the world is stupid enough to support your jibberish
well join the army maybe they will give you some money. funny how many people do not goto college because of money. she was smart enough to graduate but not smart enough to pay the loan off. I would think a college graduate would get atleast a 50k plus job a year. more than enough to pay 800 per month plus rent and living. Time to grow up young one. Should have gone to Community college if you are going to bitch about paying the loan back.
@ultrapirtle That's almost a good idea, except that student loans are almost impossible to discharge through bankruptcy. You're pretty much stuck with them for life.
@DirtFlyer I wouldn't say almost impossible..though much more difficult than many other types of debt. You have to demonstrate to a court's satisfaction that paying the debt would be 'unduly harsh' on you and your dependents. Most courts will cancel student loan debt if you can prove you can't maintain a reasonable standard of living while paying (and having $1600 a month subtracted from your paycheck will do that to most people). I guess it would depend upon her current wage and pay history.
I'll just mention here that education in Norway is practically free. In total You don't have to pay more than around 100$ in semester fee and in support of the student organisation if you go to the public universities (which are the majority). Books and other stuff comes as an extra, but the education it self is free.
Everybody can also get a student loan of around 1443 USD a month. The neat thing is that if you live away from home 40% of this becomes a scholarship.
@snaffen Yes, but according to Gen Beck, all of Scandinavia is socialist, and we hate socialist, so we hate not paying for education and thus looooove to get in debt like crazy... American dream baby, American dream!
I feel sorry for American students. I grew up in a country where the only thing that dictates which university I attend is my grades. As it should be.
This $200K girl is a moron. OMG, she is an adult, and she can live with her mistakes like the rest of us. I don't see why she doesn't just file bankruptcy. She's clearly qualified to do that.
I been thinking a lot about the education system lately and I realized that it's only there for a select few.... only the best minds can get an education and thence learn the ins and outs of our government and those who don't learn about will be mislead into working within this system... This effects poor people the most and I used to HATE this idea BUT upon furthr evaluation it's seem harsh but this system has been working this way forever.. If everyone got an education there'd be FEW janitors.
I mean the way it is the system makes it nearly impossible for a lower class child to get an education in any number of ways.... Now I know this is because an educated population makes for a weakened governmental stance ESPECIALLY in a "democracy" and yes I DID put sarcasm quotes on that... Now I used to believe that this was a good thing that if everyone was educated things wold be BETTER but then I thought about it more and realized a civilization like our could NOT sustain itself like that...
hate to admit but we need the uneducated.. We need stupidity.. we need slaves. It's just a reality, a sad one, but a reality. This country was built on the backs of slave labor and continues to But if everyone was educated enough to understand this shit this country would FALL APART AT THE SEAMS! maybe I'm WAY to ideological, in that the utopia I'm looking for would take hundreds of years to obtain working within the system we have now and this leads me to conclude that there's nothing we can do
Ana, I go to CSUN now. Yes, it's a lot more affordable than USC but the fees are going up every single year and next spring the fees will go up 10% after already going up 5% this fall.
How the fucc did she end up owing 200k of debt for undergraduate studies? Crazy. Her parents must have made just enough for her not to qualify for financial aid.
I was very fortunate to have parents pay for my college. And after 3 years I didnt graduate due to flunking one crappy subject, which they now have excluded from the curriculum anyway.
Fuck Kelly Space. Too many dumb-asses going to college who don't need to. That's why education costs have gone up so much and a bachelors degree is now virtually worthless -- because of bimbos like this. Everyone tells high-schoolers that they need to go to college. No, you don't. Be creative, work in the arts, invent a product, open a business -- think for yourself for a change.
@deeplynluv High School is a scam. I'm in college and the material taught in public schools does not even come close to the comprehension level required to get through college without some sort of debt. College offers networking opportunities, which is 100x more valuable than the material, so that's why it's so essential, and well worth the 100-200k tuition.
I think you should wait to see what kind of job you get after college, what kind of salary you earn, how long it will take to pay off that loan, what kind of scarifies you have to make due to those monthly payments and how it affects your life before you decide that the 200k is worth it. Many people are finding that it was not worth it but only after school do they realize it.
I agree. It's definitely a scam which I regret allowing my parents to push me into. My student loans are a little of $500 per month with NO JOBS available. What I learned is that parents who push their kids into college rather than learning an actual useful trade/skill do so because they're more interested in being able to brag about their kids degree to their friends and family. The loan that the kid will be stuck with doesn't cross their mind.

How did you get $200,000 in Student debt? Is that really just 'tuition'? Is tuition in the US that high?
gamerfromcanada 1 year ago
@gamerfromcanada The average UCLA student spent 30k+ a year so for a 4 year degree even if you working its easy to have 80k once you go onto go for your masters, med school, law school ect its easy to get to 200k

@Tony007corp Woahh, where did u get the 30k/year? I go to UCLA and my tuition (aka education fee) is only about 11k/year (this does not include ANY rent or outside bills as that is not "tuition")

Student loans are generally non-dischargeable debt which means that they are still owed after bankruptcy. There are hardship exceptions, but this is difficult to obtain. One example is being disabled.

LOL Also, everything you do that is nice or costs $, you can have a % deducted from your loan.
ginko27 1 year ago
Well Ana, I will say that there are others ways to have less debt or pay it off without struggling, but just saying basically follow the money isn't the best advice IMO. Not everyone wants those degrees like business or whatnot, if I majored in something just for the money and wasn't interested my college life would be worse. And also whatever degree you get, you can make it work if you really want to and try

What a waste.
legatoslide47 1 year ago
@GJNCA In my home country as well as others, the student never even has to hear the word "tuition" (except for very exclusive private schools), there is also a student grant and a student loan to get, in order to cover the cost of study material and living expenses during time of study, but for this part one has to declare one's resources to prove that one really needs the grant, and if the grant is not enough one can apply for the loan as well.
Works pretty well.
Petersunnergren 1 year ago
The government should pay tuitions. Civilized governments do.
It is in a country's best interest to have an educated public, can we all not agree on that?

Even at a high-end college she shouldn't be eating the full price tag at a private school unless she was absurdly rich going in and got no aid. Also, if she was going to study sociology she should have waited for grad school to go to Northwestern. she could have gone four, then two for a masters, and still kept it under 200k if she went to a public 4-year. There's a lot of people out there who should get financial help before this girl.

if you can get into $200K of debt going to college in the USA there is something seriously wrong with that country. I can only assume she has been irresponsible in getting into that amount of debt like Ana said she should have gone to a cheaper college
UK1774 1 year ago
@UK1774 not necessarily, top universities here charge in excess of 30~40k per academic year, so it's quite possible she's got into debt just from normal tuition expenses. Which is of course sad, and not right, but that's the US for you. :(
philosophystudent 1 year ago
Wait wait, so where did this 200K debt come from?
LegendaryAsshole 1 year ago
@LegendaryAsshole She probably went to an Ivy or top rank college that cost 35-45k. Four to five years could definitely put you in debt for 200k if you had no scholarships or grants.
biggydx 1 year ago
@biggydx That's a shame. I won't pay her way, not a smigeon, but if she manages it'll be one hell of a success story.

This was $200k for undergrad alone?
Look, college is way too expensive. There's no real doubt, but there's also nothing wrong with going to a state school. I went to a school that ran almost 200k for 4 years. Even with a nice scholarship and help from my parents, it was completely NOT WORTH IT.
You can go to a school for half that price and get a perfectly good education, a good job right out of school, and/or entry into a grad program. Private college is too much. You'll thank me later.

lowenklee 1 year ago
@ultrapirtle That's almost a good idea, except that student loans are almost impossible to discharge through bankruptcy. You're pretty much stuck with them for life.
DirtFlyer 1 year ago
@DirtFlyer I wouldn't say almost impossible..though much more difficult than many other types of debt. You have to demonstrate to a court's satisfaction that paying the debt would be 'unduly harsh' on you and your dependents. Most courts will cancel student loan debt if you can prove you can't maintain a reasonable standard of living while paying (and having $1600 a month subtracted from your paycheck will do that to most people). I guess it would depend upon her current wage and pay history.
ultrapirtle 1 year ago
I'll just mention here that education in Norway is practically free. In total You don't have to pay more than around 100$ in semester fee and in support of the student organisation if you go to the public universities (which are the majority). Books and other stuff comes as an extra, but the education it self is free.
Everybody can also get a student loan of around 1443 USD a month. The neat thing is that if you live away from home 40% of this becomes a scholarship.

If everyone got an education there'd be FEW janitors.
upplsuckimcool16 1 year ago
I mean the way it is the system makes it nearly impossible for a lower class child to get an education in any number of ways.... Now I know this is because an educated population makes for a weakened governmental stance ESPECIALLY in a "democracy" and yes I DID put sarcasm quotes on that... Now I used to believe that this was a good thing that if everyone was educated things wold be BETTER but then I thought about it more and realized a civilization like our could NOT sustain itself like that...
upplsuckimcool16 1 year ago
hate to admit but we need the uneducated..
