@mariogamersidequest Wrong again. This game has no continues; so your lives are basically your continues. That makes this game even more accurate to the arcade version. But it's harder than that one because of the many levels, the aggressive enemies and the fact that some attacks do more damage to you.
@Terryracoon Here goes: Contra is the original. Always has been. All Japanese versions were Contra. The original arcade version was renamed Gryzor in Europe. Then, some computer versions within Europe were called Gryzor also. Then some idiot called a Japanese Contra ROM Gryzor. From there, people have been assuming Contra was originally Gryzor in Japan. This version, for MSX, is NOT called Gryzor.
Just one question. I have a Japanese Contra ROM called Gryzor, but it's not just called that, the title screen actually says Gryzor. It's got cutscenes and background animations that western Contra lacks. Is this the screw-up you were talking about or some kind of official re-release?
@Sejr Well, although the screwup isn't in that ROM you have, the ROM isn't an official re-release either. Short story: It's a ROM hack by a fan. Details: The guy who made it actually made 2 hacks of Contra: One with "Contra" on the title screen, and one with "Gryzor" (which was actually to pay homage to the European arcade Contra, which is Gryzor). This was somehow mis-perceived, and now, there are mistakes everywhere online that Japanese Contra is Gryzor. Even Wayforward made that mistake.
I see, thanks for explaining that. Did the guy hack or program in the cutscenes and animations as well? That would be a pretty difficult task, certainly out of the ordinary.
@Sejr Yes, that would be a difficult task. The cutscenes and extras are all part of the original Japanese version. He only hacked in the translated texts.
And hacked in the Gryzor title screen on one occasion. That about explains it, then, good to have that cleared up as I had been wondering what the deal with that ROM was.
@fuckcomments This is an official version. And there's no real reason to think that its quality is sub-standard. This is one of the best ports of Arcade Contra.
@921144666 Yeah, the addition of a lifebar for the removal of continues really balances out that key gameplay factor. It all works out together really well.
@Mrblackclad You'e an embarassingly bad troll. You somehow make yourself look even worse than you already are by your ignorance-filled comment, your god-awful tragic judgement of video games which your family weeps and regrets your existence over and by your inability to do anything productive with your time. Blocked.
looks interresting.contra meets metal gear.i think msx is an awesome gamesystem because it have sd snatcher , metal gear 1&2 and some other awesome games.
Great port. Nothing wrong with the "touch and loose" rule in the NES, but life bar is more friendly to not-so-pro players than instant death after ANY hit. And possibility to choose either you wanna take another weapon or not is another good improvement.
The only thing that's annoying is lack of scrolling...
When you directly translate the three letters, it does become Kontora. However, this is the case with all Contra games since they have the same three letters. Therefore, you just call it Contra (which is what Kontora sounds like).
it's konami's thing, they also did that to one of their great shmups-slamander, they found kanjis that sound "saramanda" and add to that it even translates with some sense to the game, now that was awesome
those jap. characters are the so-called ATEJI. >> unlike kanji which gives a sentence/phrase when 2 or more characters are present, the ATEJI is just a kanji translation of the supposedly Katakana reading. yes, it's KONTORA. :)
hi there! we're amazed with the gameplay. personally, i've only played the Famicom port of Contra and regarding its different ports, this MSX version is really an interesting one. :-)
i would really be glad to share this game with an old friend of mine who is another contra fan.

why are there sound delays in screen transitions? Is that a c-bios issue? It's not supposed to have them.

@samortails I don't know. It only seems to do that when I set the MSX system to Korean or Chinese. I chose those just for fun.

Perhaps if you knew the limitations of the MSX and how nice of an accomplishment this is, you wouldn't speak like a total dumbass.

I like how it works out so well in the end; how each character has its own meaning, each meaning having somewhat significance in the game's context.

"Kontora" being called "Contra" reminds me of "Berabow Man" being called "Bravoman".

A life bar in Contra?

Consider it like this: The lifebar is now like your lives count and the lives themselves are like continues because there are no actual continues.

No, it was a very common music style from Konami MSX games, but those carts had a special exclusive sound chip.
