Watching this video from my recently bought X301. Its one word: awesome.

Runs Windows 7 ultimate real fast, battery life with full brightness, wifi on is about 3.5 hours. For business use, battery life is way longer.

DVD burner is very useful if you transfer data, or play games if you want.

Its super light and a pleasure to carry around.

If you need a laptop for work, this is the king of business laptops.

Its got a business-look about it that motivates me to get my work done.

For $2,600 You could get a 13" Macbook pro with a 256GB SSD 4 gigs of DDR3 RAM, 2.53 Ghz core 2 duo, 7 hour battery(5.5 - 6.5 hour real use), much better display (color-wise) and you could buy Windows (XP, Vista or 7) to put on it. You would also have about $50 extra to do with what you will. All of this for just a measly 1.34 pounds more and 0.22" thicker. Yeah I think it's worth the extra little weight.

the mbp is 4.5 lbs, which is pretty light. the new macbooks now ship with a 7 hour battery. Its 0.95 inches thick. thats not even an inch. compare the 13.3" mbp to the thinkpad x301. compare the processor speed. compare the hd. compare the RAM. the graphics card. the price.

I accidentally did it with my T42p, long before SSDs and the like simplified building robust laptops. The drop was even quite a bit higher than what you discuss, as it slipped of a bistro table standing on hard ground. The sound when it crashed was enormous, yet it booted and ran reliably for a handful more years.

The system requirements for Autocad 2009 are: Intel or AMD Dual Core processor, 1.6 GHz. The X301 has a ultra-low power 1.4 Ghz Intel Core 2 Duo SU9400. You could probably get away with it, but it might be slightly sluggish. Make sure you get the 3 GB RAM option, though.

That is a good ultraportable, but for £1,900 it really doesn't feel special enough for what it is. The Voodo Envy and Macbook Air however, do, but the Envy perhaps more than the Air as the Air is more of a bandwagon showoff whereas the Envy is just plain sexy, as well as having the VIOS and all the clever features which people will actually use unlike apple's normal gimmicks.
