I just started oil painting for a class and my teacher makes beautiful work, but he never has us lay down a base or do any alla prima techniques before hand. Its very difficult. We just have to slap paint on the canvas and hope it looks okay. Thank you for making this video. Its so good to know that oil painting doesn't truly have a difficult learning curve.
I am attempting my first painting as encouraged by my spouse. I can't thank you enough for your helpful video. After weeks of research, I have to tell you that your demo is exactly what I needed to see. It is a quality session and a stream of tips along the way. You have lessened my fear and made me feel like I can really do this. THANK YOU.*THIS VID NEEDS TO BE SHARED*
Dollar per stroke...Hahaaa well problem we can anticipate there is most artists might then have the tendency to paint as many strokes as possible! Lol...thanks for the smile! 8^)
I have watced this video several times over the last year and get something new out of it each time. I, too, am currently a slave to detail, Larry. It controls me on the canvas. I want to feel free when the brush is in my hands. I want to be more forgiving of myself and encourage 'happy accidents' to quote dear Bob Ross. Someday I'll get there and it will be because artists like yourself shared your techniques with us. Thank you.
awesome demo Larry, I've watched it several times now as well as your waterfall demos. You have amazing skills as a painter, love your color and brushwork. Looking forward to seeing more, will you post another video soon?
@hopelsslyinlove actually alla prima is a latin term meaning basically "all at first" or all at once. its where you start a project and finish it all at once.... it is very important in becoming a good artist in any medium
I watched 20 You Tube painting demos before I reached yours. Yours was the first I actually heard good techniques discussed and I felt I had learned something. Good work, Thx
Lovely video - very generous - I love your paint work, beautiful !!! I have been aiming over the last few months, for the type of brush work you speak of, have been trying hard to minimize my brush strokes and be precise in the drawing so the brush strokes can be really direct and lively and beautiful...
It's such a treat to hear you discuss making each brush stroke count. I am a poet. Each word must be considered. Experience offers everything if we can learn to listen and observe our actions with care. Thanks for posting.
thats a good comparison...yes, and recently heard an artist refer to painting as a wink at eternity. I believe poetry would apply most succinctly there as well.

Do you charge a dollar per stroke?
I could see someone paying $429 for that painting, so I was just wondering.

Your video has cleared some of the mystery of alla prima for me. Could you demonstrate your approach with a face or figure?

Well, I'm bound determined to improve, and since i'm still "nobody" and I don't count the strokes, maybe I'de do well to try it, eh?
