The House of the Rising Sun has been one of my favorite songs of all times since I first heard Joan Baez sing it. 50 years later I heard Josh White ( dead tho he well may be) version, and my soul ripped itself out of me and wanted to make sure my little sister was home where she belonged. I thought we hippies and folk-singers were the beginning. I am so sorry I didn't listen harder to the songs that gave us our beginnings!!
Yes, That,s correct. Josh(My father) was supposedly the first artist to record the song. You can tell because the gender of the title character has been changed in the popular rendition.. However, you can e-mail my brother, Donald White as to the validity of this. But family history assigns the original recording of the song to our father. Please be aware that I am my father's love child. although, I have a close relationship with my brother and sisters). Daniel Josh White./
@SamfrickinRaimi The Animals learned their version from Bob Dylan, who learned it from Dave Van Ronk. Van Ronk changed the chord changes to those used by The Animals and Dylan. The Animals changed the narrator to a john instead of a prostitute, supposedly because eric Burden didn`t feel comfortable singing from a woman's point of view. Josh's was the first version I ever heard and it's still my favourite.
One of the better performances on this tune !
Thanks

TheCannManBand of 5 mos ago, now Fr, 03/11/2011, 1711Z, asks for chord changes
While this is basic chord change chart to song, Josh White does not follow them exactly; you can modify by ear to conform to his unique version:
"House Of The Rising Sun" J.W. Key of Cm; 3bs; 3/4 time; tempo = 69 - 72 bpm; adagio: slow & stately, "at ease."
//:Cm /Eb /F /Ab /Cm /Eb /G / /Cm /Eb /F /Ab /Cm /G /Cm / ://
Melody interpreted by player.
16 bar folk - blues form

Supposedly this is the version that Chaz Chandler heard that caused The Animals to record it.
