Either will work. If you get the Clear, the results are a bit more specular. I would try to keep the light more than 10 feet from the subject. If you get the Cloud, I would add the Chrome Dome insert, especially for shot beyond about 10-15 feet. Of course, these distance are approximate and depend on the ambient conditions.
LS is definitely the portable choice. If you are in a studio, or in very controlled situations -- or need to gel the background-- using multiple, off-camera flashes, then the WT is perfect. If you only have one, get the LS.
lightsphere -- no brainer, quick to shoot, no muss no fuss. great, standardized yet even shots
whaletail -- flexible, slightly akward for storage, you will definitely get mocked at as a toilet on your flash etc, various flash gels, soft light, bounce only?
@c2thew i know this is a year old comment, but no serious photographer would care to have a toilet on top of their camera if it makes their photos come out perfect.
@ilovetype1 use the right modifier for the job. REGARDLESS of what people think about it.
I own a lightsphere and understand it's strengths and weaknesses. Sure it's not a perfect diffuser, but it's better than having no diffuser than to have a bare flash appearance.
That was extremely informative. I own a cloud and a lightsphere and I couldn't quite wrap my head around the whaletail. Now I know why I want the thing.
And as for saving space, now all I need are a handful of small gels to carry - as opposed to the large inverted done accessories of my lightsphere. I'll keep all of them, but I see myself using that whaletail with MUCH more versatility.
Very informative review sir.
