  • They are not bored; they are very calm, serene people - no show business here folks.

  • I'm sorry, but I liked that. In English!!

  • Since photography is prohibited among most Mennonites, I'm a little confused by their acceptance of a video camera...

  • @Davidw5748 It's the Old Order Amish who frown on photography. They see it as a sign of vanity. Mennonites are different from the Amish who shun electricity, automobiles, radios and TV. Even more conservative and traditional Mennonites are adhering to technology such as computers, video cameras and electronic media. Hope that helps! (From a life time Mennonite)

  • @jdsings4U Know what? I think I was thinking of the Holdeman Mennonites...sorry!

  • harmonious!

  • I have just found this video. I have never heard it sung before, but I remember my mother playing it as a piano piece over 70 years ago, and it brought back many memories. Is it published as a hymn, and if so where could I get a copy of the music and words?

  • @trixtwin19 Star of the East, oh Bethlehem star, Guiding us on to heaven afar Sorrow and grief and lull'd by the light Thou hope of each mortal, in death's lonely night Fearless and tranquil, we look up to Thee Knowing thou be m'st through eternity Help us to follow where Thou still dost guide Pilgrims of earth so wise Star of the East, thou hope of the soul While round us here the dark billows roll Lead us from sin to glory afar Thou star of the East, thou sweet Bethlehem

  • The clicking of the cameras were annoying, but the singing was beautiful.

  • I would have liked it better if the clicks of the cameras would have not been heard in the video. They do sing beautifully, though.

  • stop zooming in and out its annoying....

  • Beautiful singing! It is wrong to down any religion cause it is up to God to judge us all in the end. Nobodys perfect we are all human and we are all born sinners. It is up to each one of us to make the right decision in our life. God wants us to serve him but nobody has to. He wants us to want to.

  • Wonderful! We sing at the dinner table, too!

  • i was a member of the holdeman mennonite's in buhl, idaho. they dont believe in education past the 8th grade and they try to "break their child's spirit" so they will be submissive and stay in line. this is a sick religion.

  • @mrpacifistnth I don't think it is a sick religion the church just set the rules so they keep all there flocks safe

  • @mrpacifistnth, I very much disagree with you on your viewpoint, I also grew up in a Mennonite setting, my parents are Holdeman Mennonites. Though I never joined their church or have been converted as they call it, I definitely believe they are a fine people, sure, some of their doctrines sound really crazy to non conservative people, especially when stated as you just did, ( break their spirit), which is only to teach them humility, but humble's out of style.Oh, and beautiful singing, friends.

  • Oh wow! i know this whole family :) Suprised to see them on youtube! how cool is this!

  • no offense but I married an ex mennonite men and it was like total culture shock for me when they broke out the song book and well thought I should sing lol!

  • Praise God! There's nothing like gathering the family together to sing praises unto the Lord! He is so worthy! Bless his holy name! Beautiful Singing!

  • Thank you to this family for the song and allowing their family to be filmed for display.....rare. The time spent getting to truly know such Mennonite families is time extremely well spent, they shall treat you with kindness and respect!!! excellent voices!!

  • I was asked to sing this hymn in a church in Maine this morning. I had never heard the song before, and you helped me learn it and find meaning in it. Thank you for the post and the video!

  • this was my mom's favorite Christmas song. she passed on in sept. I miss her. wish I could find the lyrics to the song somehow

  • Mennonites are not all so conservative, even these are not as "plain folkish" as they might look. I'm a Mennonite and i have a pony tail! (I'm a guy) They are quite accepting and probably thinking very hard about what they are singing.... it isn't a skill most are good at... lol.

  • @keeferbl192 I agree too! The one thing about Mennonites, is that they never stop thinking and challenging themselves. It is expected I would have thought. If you do not, then you waste the brain that you were given surely?!

  • Google 'Mennonite'...It's a whole 'nother' world.

  • I don't know why everyone spamed you I agree!

  • Thank you Lucy! My post was meant as a compliment to the singing of course. I posted what I did because it is just a very traditional way of service and I don't think that people either understand nor appreciate it fully. I guess they also didn't appreciate my comment either! Oh, well!

  • @LegalAlien100 I married a man brought up Mennonite for the most part they are good living people I think their worship ideals are boring but I after 14 years of marriage I am thankful that my husband sings all the time

  • Que Dieu vous benisse.Dumnezeu sa va binecuvinteze.

  • I know you guys meant really well by posting this, but you should at least seem joyful while singing...Most of you look totally bored.

    But it sounded nice.

    :)

  • I have noticed this about "plain folk" singing style. I think it is part of the gentle culture - - not a bad thing at all. We cannot make judgments about what is going on in someone's heart, and we certainly do not want them to turn into actors to please us.

  • PS. lovely family singing!

  • I ditto tallcook37.

  • tallcook, are you familiar with the holdeman mennonites?

  • Judy garland does a great version!

  • these aren't old order mennonites, they are conservatives

  • I'm still trying to learn the difference. It's confusing. Apparently not all Conservative Mennonites are plain, am I correct? I looked them up and they certainly did not look like plain people. Pretty song. I have never heard it before.

  • Plain is a loose term. It depends who you ask. Conservative has become more of a name then anything, the children are usually pushing the limits.( depending on the church)

  • I see. So are all Conservative Mennonites part of the Conservative Mennonite Conference or are there even other conservative groups? I looked up the CCM and they have a college and nobody there looked plain at all.

  • In Ontario, there is Nationwide, Eastern, Midwest, and the Ontario conference, to name a few, There are conservatives from Amish background and from Mennonite background. Your plainer conservatives have a bible school in Ohio and Penn. Why the interest?

  • I like the religion and I considered becoming one, but I know no Mennonites and the nearest church is miles and miles away. But I am still very interested in Mennonite people and there lives. Are you an Anabaptist?

  • I was a convert for 15 years, there are some great things to learn but do not join them it will only bring you much heartache in the long run. They do not know how to live with outsiders, and there system of thinking will never change.

  • tallcook, are you familiar with holdeman mennonites?

  • yes I am, what are you wanting to know?

  • yeap.. truely these folks are Mennonite.. Old order, but still Mennonite.. Not BEACHY AMISH.

  • where you get Beachy from i dont see it printed nowheres on here...
