  • great tune, just found it an orderd the cd on amezon

  • I saw them do this one live with Alison Moorer, and it was dynamite. Too bad they haven't recorded that version. It had a lovely fire to it.

  • Good song but retarded name

  • Why would anyone dislike this?

  • My dad used to sing this to me...brings back a lot of good memories..thanks for posting

  • This is my favorite version. The chieftains are great!

  • I love the Chieftains. This song kept my toes a jumping and taping what ever. I also listened and produced my own video hopefully it will be a response to this great song.

    Ron! From Canada!

  • None of these versions come near to The Wandering Five's Version. Have it on vinyl. If the needle wasn't broken on my player I could upload it.

  • @LushOfOld518 None of ever any versions come near to the Scafell Pike version my friend. The problem is, that it is very difficult to purchase or find it.....

  • Well, that's a real toe tapper.

  • @edthebanjo didn't say that. anyone can like it. it's the stupid argument going on in here about who's more gaelic the scots, the welsh, or the irish.

  • Found this by pure mistake but shit i have been missing something until now i have just found it..,Bloody cracking thank you !!!

  • i defy anyone not to tap a foot to this song. it always gets me going. and scots, welsh, irish what does it matter we're all celts.

  • @TheSandsie13

I'm English... does that mean I'm not allowed to like it? :(

  • that second singer sounds like a boyband singer.. yuch.

totally takes the feeling out of the song. the best version of this song is done by planxty, despite the great performance by the chieftains on this one.

  • The Joy of Scottish lyrics and Irish Timing .. (the Celtic connection)

  • @poshknacker Its an English not a Scottish Folk song

  • I never feel like dancing when I'm at the club, but hearing this song just makes me jump up and get movin! Musta been born in the wrong generation this time around haha.

  • vietnam

  • This is the catchiest damn song

  • Highest rated comment is dumb. This isn't an irish song, its a Scottish ballad. Idiots.

  • @liamag92 yep its a scottish border ballad, in fact the irish didnt start performing this song till the 60s-70s. The gypsy was called Davie or John Faa and was hanged in the 16th century. In Dunfriesshire which of course is nowhere near ireland.

  • :D, just makes me think on irish party music :)

  • vietnam!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Does anyone know the name of the tune The Chieftains play at the end of The Raggle Taggle Gypsy? It's in Gm.

    Thank You

  • this song always makes me want to dance.love it it's my second favorate track on the album.

  • Definitive version of this song! Love it!

  • another gypsy kidnapping-disgusting come my friends let us cull the vermon

  • That was an awsome jam !!!!!!!!! i wish i could be playing there with them .

  • very nice vocals...interesting vocals :-)

  • I saw the Chieftains perform this live with Alison Moorer, and it was simply stunning.

  • This version makes me long to here Planxty's version on the "Black Album" The way they launched into "Tabhair Dom Do Laimh" at the end was nothing less thatn stunning...

  • Planxty ROCKS.

  • this song is wicked good i wish celtic thunder did the full version!

  • Eeeeeeesh, celtic thunder.......

  • woot the full version

  • This is good, but i like the version of yhe waterboys and sharon Shanon better, but taste is personal.

  • Please, Celtic Thunder would pay to apprentice under the Chiefians and no one living can rival Thile in what he does best.

  • Hmm, as a mandolinist maybe not, but there are better folk singers.

I agree on Celtic Thunder kissing the Chieftains boots mind...

  • I loves this version! Its sopposed to be a wild rough crazy whirlwind of a song, and thats why I prefer this one to the celtic thunder's...

  • @Lassielurv - Ohh, well said! That is exactly how this version sounds & how it's supposed to be.

This song has amazed me from the first hearing.... Thanks for the upload!

  • @winkieandleah This is the first time I have heard this version, brilliant.

  • So... do you want to put it into our version?

    Guess who.

  • I love how they put "Congress Reel" in their version!

  • I love this song its awesome

  • schon lustig aber die version von celtic thunder is genauso gut, ich wüsste gerne wie der mann in diesem lied heißt...

  • honestly, i think Celtic Thunder sung this song much better...

this version is still good i just like Celtic Thunder's better!!

  • Comment removed

  • Do you know if Celtic Thunder ever did the full version or just the one where the instrumental goes on? I'd love to hear their full version.

  • they lacked a female singer up until Storm/It's Entertainment, so who knows, perhaps they will get a staged version instead of just each singing a verse.

  • Celtic Thunder is missing the soul and essence of traditional Irish music. its all polished to appeal to the masses.

besides, sneekypat has it right: celtic thunder has got nuthin on the cheiftains, nor the rovers for that matter.

  • True, true.

  • Just listened to celtic thunder's version, and couldn't agree with you more. It made me think of the kinda thing you'd buy as a last minute mother's day present, something like that. Had to come listen to how it should sound after hearing what they did to it :(

  • @dreadsherpa Still love Celtic Thunder though!

  • @dreadsherpa

Yeah. Except that it's not Irish, it's Scottish.

  • @ArashiTheBrave

There are those who swear it's English. Who cares, it's a great song.

  • @dstudie1 Based on a true story that happened in Scotland. Scottish.

  • @ArashiTheBrave Is it? Have you any proof of that? I've read that theory, but it's also a theory that it's a retelling of the Orpheus tale from ancient Greece. Another theory is that it was an old troubador song not based on anything at all. Some say it's as old as the 1400's, others, the 1600's. I would love to see definative proof with historical fact on who wrote it. Barring that, it's just a great song from nowhere.

  • @dstudie1

    Oh, get a life.

I read the story it was based on. There is historical evidence, but I really can't be bothered to spend my day looking for it.

  • @dstudie1 first recorded in Nithdale in the 19th century by Child Balads based on a scottish folk song from the 18th century lord and they gypsy border romani was a Faa which is a scottish name and there are still scottish gypsies called Faa to this day. Interestijng point the gypsies were first recorded in scotland in the 16oos when this tale is supposed to happen. Most if not all the elemnts are scottish.

  • @dreadsherpa i can understand what you mean but Celtic Thunder does an amazing job and brings something new and (better) to it!

  • @BoutiqueHairbows i guess if you like cheezy ass gay musical elements with your folk music.

  • such a fun song..

    ;)

  • :) i loooooove it!!!

    nice song to dance to

  • the musical arrangement is great! but i think mike scotts voice fits better to the story in this song. its rough and wild and not so sweet :-P

  • i first heard this song done by celtic thunder. The celtic thunder version is my fav. this version is amazing though. you fall in love with the first version u hear, so thats the only reason why i like CT better, plus... damian and keith are hott lol

  • the version of celtic thunder does only include the first 5 verses, but it is way better then this

  • Only idiots think celtic thunder is better than The Chieftains.

  • thats a brilliant version

  • whats the name of the girl who sung?

  • I believe her name is Sara Watkins, it's the girl from Nickel Creek. I think she has such a sweet voice.

  • Allison Moore, that's her name m8

  • So, it's Sara Watkins.

  • Sara Watkins

  • one of the best versions!

  • I try to play this on the recorder...it's fun. Their version sounds much better...:)

  • Just awesome. I grew up listening to this song and it still gets me up and dancing!

  • Best version ever.

  • Oh my god! These are two of my favorite bands ever! It's like getting peanut butter mixed in with the chocalate!

  • ... ;)

  • its like sex mixed with SNL digital shorts!

  • Yes! Exactly like that!

  • XDXD awesome

  • @Postscript624 sounds like pixes on hydrogen !

  • @Postscript624 I know it sounds amazing.

  • How can anyone be still on his seat during this phantasctic song? ;o) I'd love to know.

  • this is a really good version...i love the party atmosphere, thanks for putting it up..
