I love the Chieftains. This song kept my toes a jumping and taping what ever. I also listened and produced my own video hopefully it will be a response to this great song.
@LushOfOld518 None of ever any versions come near to the Scafell Pike version my friend. The problem is, that it is very difficult to purchase or find it.....
@edthebanjo didn't say that. anyone can like it. it's the stupid argument going on in here about who's more gaelic the scots, the welsh, or the irish.
that second singer sounds like a boyband singer.. yuch.
totally takes the feeling out of the song. the best version of this song is done by planxty, despite the great performance by the chieftains on this one.
I never feel like dancing when I'm at the club, but hearing this song just makes me jump up and get movin! Musta been born in the wrong generation this time around haha.
@liamag92 yep its a scottish border ballad, in fact the irish didnt start performing this song till the 60s-70s. The gypsy was called Davie or John Faa and was hanged in the 16th century. In Dunfriesshire which of course is nowhere near ireland.
This version makes me long to here Planxty's version on the "Black Album" The way they launched into "Tabhair Dom Do Laimh" at the end was nothing less thatn stunning...
they lacked a female singer up until Storm/It's Entertainment, so who knows, perhaps they will get a staged version instead of just each singing a verse.
Just listened to celtic thunder's version, and couldn't agree with you more. It made me think of the kinda thing you'd buy as a last minute mother's day present, something like that. Had to come listen to how it should sound after hearing what they did to it :(
@ArashiTheBrave Is it? Have you any proof of that? I've read that theory, but it's also a theory that it's a retelling of the Orpheus tale from ancient Greece. Another theory is that it was an old troubador song not based on anything at all. Some say it's as old as the 1400's, others, the 1600's. I would love to see definative proof with historical fact on who wrote it. Barring that, it's just a great song from nowhere.
@dstudie1 first recorded in Nithdale in the 19th century by Child Balads based on a scottish folk song from the 18th century lord and they gypsy border romani was a Faa which is a scottish name and there are still scottish gypsies called Faa to this day. Interestijng point the gypsies were first recorded in scotland in the 16oos when this tale is supposed to happen. Most if not all the elemnts are scottish.
i first heard this song done by celtic thunder. The celtic thunder version is my fav. this version is amazing though. you fall in love with the first version u hear, so thats the only reason why i like CT better, plus... damian and keith are hott lol
great tune, just found it an orderd the cd on amezon

There is historical evidence, but I really can't be bothered to spend my day looking for it.
Then you have no right to comment on the historical bases of this song if you cant be bothered to look it up.

they lacked a female singer up until Storm/It's Entertainment, so who knows, perhaps they will get a staged version instead of just each singing a verse.
phantasma616 1 year ago
Celtic Thunder is missing the soul and essence of traditional Irish music. its all polished to appeal to the masses.
besides, sneekypat has it right: celtic thunder has got nuthin on the cheiftains, nor the rovers for that matter.
