The key for correctly sweeping is almost chiefly the way you pick... that's my major problem and something I think I've never given a damn about, but now I see how important is to start the slowest possible and mind the way I pick... but I'm still a rookie at doing that all...

I've been sweep picking for a while and I can do 3 strings easily. My speed has gotten much better, but thing is I hit the last string (before going back) twice and I don't know how to avoid that. In tabs for sweeping, you can see that the last string, or the peak of the sweep, is only hit once. When I sweep pick I hit the string twice (going up and then turning to come back down). Idk if I'm supposed to do that or to avoid the 6th string when coming down? Its kind of confusing. Help! :O

@lordzero545 Hammer on's help, but to get it while picking just slow down as much as possible. Like 170 bpm quarter notes or less even. Get that as clean as possible and then start to speed up by changing your metronome speeds gradually. And then go back to 170, but do 8th notes instead of quarters. It will help get your picking really clean.

@lordzero545 Take your time, I had the same problem of hitting the D string twice when doing a downward sweep and going back into the upward sweep. Another thing I found is to really try on hammering the final notes on your D string (if your guitar is in drop D, it'll be the E string otherwise). But slow your sweeps right down to get it flowing smoother :)

@lordzero545 is the last string have only 1 note? if so you can either add a hammer-on to keep picking that string twice (this works best when the top and bottom of the arpeggio have hammer-on/pull-off keeps it even and fluent) or only pick once during the arpeggio either up or down and skip to the next string which is a bitch if your practicing timing because it throws off your sweeping technique somewhat depending on the type of sweep you want

@medic2009guy The last string has one note. What I'm talking about is Avenged Sevenfold - Afterlife solo. Synyster only picks the "peak" string once and continues. If I try to skip it, like you said, I get thrown off. And won't adding a hammer-on ruin the song itself since I'm not following it? And what do you mean hammer-on it? So that it hits a different note each time instead of one note twice?

@lordzero545 you should sweep down all strings, and the way back down, hit the B string with a down stroke. That way you wont hit the high E 2 times.

U got the techique down, but for any kind of soloing you need to hear every note. This is where you lack. I can hear a few notes, but the rest is mush. Take the distorion off and try to sound every note cleanly. Listen to Frank Gambale. He uses a clean tone and still plays clean.

Out of all of the sweep picking tutorials on YouTube, not one talks about the technique involved with keeping the strings quiet when they are not being played. Sweep picking is easy. Trying to properly deaden the string that you just played and sweeping away from is a challenge. There are a few ways to do it, and it must be done properly which ever way you choose, but this is by far the most difficult part to master, a critical part that no one talks about,

@robpm9996 The best cure for that is to learn guitar theory. Learning scales helps a lot but scales come from chords so its best to get your chords down and work from there.
