BMs do a lot in the Coast Guard. They both drive and maintain their boats, as well as act as boarding team members for their unit.

i was a BM in the us navy and its the same thing for the coast guard. physical strength and knowledge is a must and BMs are the backbone of both the us navy and the us coast guard. hooyaaaaa!!!

How hard is it to advance as a BM? I'm asking because aren't they the majority of the guard? This is the career I think I want to pursue.

since the lazy recruiter who runs this shit isn't doing his job i'll do it for him.. he's probably used to that. anyways, it depends on if you want to strike (which is on the job training) or if you want to go to A school after bootcamp, or soon after you report to your first station/cutter. A-school is the easy way, striking takes a lot of discipline and self motivation. you can do it at your own pace. as far as difficulty, its not hard at all. just keep your head in the game. stay squared away

Boatswain's Mates are our service's shipdrivers. They are the ones that operate every single one of our cutters, small boats, etc. They are also a large rating (a lot of people), so there are a lot of job opportunities out there.

It all depends on where you get stationed. Remember though, even on the bigger cutters, you have the smaller, faster rigid hull inflatables (RHIs). As a BM you're the one driving.
