Even if unemployment dropped to 5%, 10 million jobs created, Osama Bin Laden captured, success in Afghanistan, spend and deficits were under control, the troops home from Iraq, West Virginia would still not vote for Obama. Yes, this is true, but what is your point? The American slave trade was an English slave trade for over 100 years. Those people speaking are English descendents. England was not a colony - America was. British N.America had the environmental conditions to facilitate an economic institution of slavery - your tiny island did not. The first legislated racism was in British N.America (VA). I don't see why so many Europeans ignore the fact that race in America is complicated by its role as a colony.

I was pointing out that Britain hasn't and still doesn't have anywhere near the same proportion of black (or brown or yellow) people as America does, meaning there's a smaller chance of one getting elected. And that's before you factor in the difference in demographics between parliamentary constituencies - especially in rural areas.

I am also from WV and my family now lives in Kearneysville, although i think the majority of whites there voted for mccain out of fear racism and identification, i have to admit most of the whites i meet there seem a lot kinder to blacks than in some northern states of the country i go to in addition to that race-mixing here is of insane proportions compared to other parts of the u.s. i'd be interested in learning about your experiences in west virigina.

Even if unemployment dropped to 5%, 10 million jobs created, Osama Bin Laden captured, success in Afghanistan, spend and deficits were under control, the troops home from Iraq, West Virginia would still not vote for Obama. I could be wrong. If Hillary was nominated she would have won West VA, Georgia, Missouri, Arkansas (maybe), and Kentucky (maybe). Her white vote would have been better.

I can not speak for the entire state, but I can speak for myself and say I am an educated Appalachian. I voted Obama, because I liked him and his views, and his sheer passion and charismatic nature.

People, I have three BS degrees, a Masters Degree and yet I say that some of the smartest people I've met have never step through the doors of a university, college, etc. I've also known some very uneducated, educated inviduals that couldn't find their way out of a paper bag!!
