A pretty good description of man's evolution - these words from the Persian were spoken by the Islamic sage and poet Jalaluddin Rumi 1207 - 1273 some 600 years before the publication of Darwin's The Origin of Species. Great mysteries inhabit the Universal Mind ...
@MrJanja89 That's a fantastic quote, thanks for posting it.
As much as I would obviously preserve the quote - I would with my modern mind state that mankind deceives itself by denying that it is indeen an animal.
@omgbygollywow some of them did..... hence jellyfish/fungae/algae/plankton - really simple plant and animals etc. some of them did not because there was no mutation and no benefit.
@charliedolman I was just wondering why the simplest of organisms that we see today did not mutate for billions of years while humans must have had trillions of mutations from the time of the earliest form of life billions of years ago to reacy our state today. That was the meaning of my comment.
Evolutionary change is necessitated by ecological change. Bacteria and other simple organisms have been evolving since the dawn of life on Earth. It is only when the nature of an organism's ecological niche is changed that the organism must evolve/adapt or pass on. Bacterial requirements are so simplistic that individual niches are not changed with enough significance that they can prompt global evolutionary extinction level events.
@plasterdbastard I thought the theory of evolution postulated that mutations occur randomly; some advantageous and others disadvantageous. The advantageous mutations help the organism to survive so are passed on to the next generation. The disadvantageous mutations are harmful and lead to extinction. That is why I wonder how come the simplest life forms we see today have basically not had any significant mutations for billions of years while others have had many.
While it's true that mutations occur randomly, it is only one facet of evolution. The reality is that mutations must serve to better occupy a niche or provide an opportunity for the organism to occupy a separate niche if the mutated genetics are going to survive.
This is also a gross simplification of the reality of evolution.
@omgbygollywow You're right. The reason why micro and single celled organisms still exist is because they don't need to evolve more complex, they're successful how they are. It doesn't mean they're the same as their ancestors billions of years ago, they evolved just as much as anything else, they've just remained simple.
@omgbygollywow You need but to find evolution in a dictionary to understand this. Evolution is the "change in the genetic composition of a population during successive generations". Clearly not all populations live in identical conditions - therefore the inheritance of heritable characteristics is not consistent. Furthermore, I'm sure he can see "God's further purpose", he simply finds contrary evidence more convincing. In fact, did you even watch the video before posting about it?
@plasterdbastard I think you misunderstood my comment, which I clarified to charliedolman just now. Anyway, there seems to be a lot of misunderstanding when it comes to discussion on evolution. Everyone seems to have their own definition of evolution. Even the top evolutionary scientists like Mayr, Gould and Dawkins have disagreements; which of course does not automatically invalidate the theory of evolution. It appears to me that there are enough questions left unanswered.
Regardless of your definition of evolution, Thiobacillus ferrooxidans genetically evolves into a new species from another to suit the change in food abundance - ie. microhabitat.
@omgbygollywow There are disputes of some aspects of evolution, just as there are with every area of science, such as in physics as to how gravity works on a quantum level. It doesn't mean we won't find out. 60 years ago there was disputes as to why there are the same animals on different continents, we now know it's because the continents are moving.
Perhaps to put it in more blunt terms; unless your belief threatens others or me in ways I consider seriously detrimental, I will not act against you. Your opinions and approach to life is your own; freedom to live your life without undue interference from others is an axiom I live by.
Attenborough was a mad man...Nothing but a globalist. There are many others in this world who, like Attenborough, who desire the murder of millions of people. Such is the example of Godless people, when you throw God out...There goes the neighborhood (so to speak). If one throws out God, then there is no morals...no morals, leaves chaos. People like to think mankind is inherently good. Througout history we can find this is not so. We can see that also globalism is evil...no morals, without God.
Depends what descriptions of god(s) you believe, and frankly its a non-description, as many people have differing views of the concept of "god". I don't mind people believing stuff, as long as they don't force others to share their views/behaviours by force, implied force or intimidation.
I said switzerland. And forced child labour; well that is nothing like forced labor camps for children in the us and institutional apartheid that was well into the 1960s that they had in the US.
The same scientific methodology that led to the idea of evolution is the same one that led to the germ theory of disease, and produced cures for cancer, heart disease, polio, diabetes, etc. So what do these Creatonisim believers do when they get cancer or heart disease? Run off to the nearest Creationism Museum to pray in the lobby? Or do they think modern medical science is just a "theory"? That getting sick is caused by evil spirits? That mental illness is treated by exorcisims?
@farmerne God gave us a brain and free will so we can advance in many areas such as medicine.Do humans have an afterlife or soul which is seperate from the physical body ?
@adelaide102 Evolution gave humans a brain and humans used that to understand both where we come from, and the philosophy of science - which in turn lead to medicine.
Who knows? I don't believe so since there is no good reason to believe so.
You can not honestly attribute any real sense of scientific methodology to (macro) evolution because it is not empirical. Furthermore, it is wholly dependent upon abiogenesis, which like macro evolution, has not been observed, demonstrated, reproduced, or proven in a either laboratory or in nature.
Hysterical claims that evolution shares the same credibility as other empirical fields of science are nothing more than pathetic attempts to legitimize the unscientific theory.
@neuralecho You are completely wrong. We can demonstrate and have observed all levels of evolution and can prove, and partly re-create, abiogenesis to a satisfactory enough level that we know we are on the right track with it.
I am a religeous person and I love his answer to God actually. This is probably the wisest man on earth (to me at least), and his answer to the existance of a God is 'I don't know'. I never fails to impress me how the smartest of us more open to any possibility. He is 100% correct about just the ability to live and just how impressive it all is. Lets all just get along with each other no matter what we think about God or religeon or not and focus on the big picture: life and how grand it is.
@JaniceGhostHunter13 I was interested to read your post: Towards the end of his life Darwin wrote: “It seems to me absurd to doubt that a man may be an ardent Theist and an evolutionist.” Science opens our minds to questions about and marvel at its complexity. The fracture between faith and science is a false opposition that impoverishes inquiry into the realities that make up our life and world.
I don't get how anyone could believe in creationism, where I come from it's total common sense that the universe was created by the big bang some 13 billion years ago, and the earth was formed by asteroids pulled together by the gravitational force, for then to cool down so the first singlecellular lifeforms could form from the chemicals brought to earth by meteorites. And life continued to develop from that. Sounds a lot more sane than thinking some big man in the sky created the it al in 7 day
And there's "no hard feelings" regardless of this fact, because if I were proven wrong, then I would appreciate knowing what precisely was the flaw in my logic.
"I assume you are 'Thankful2' the frenzied fundie downloader from that 'Rapture' site, that got all hot and bothered by my questions there moments before you came here, so you took out your wroth on me here? lol, I understand. No hard feelings"
I honestly haven't got the foggiest of what you're "assuming" here, as I have never even been on "That rapture site" which you speak of.
..."Either all religions are false, or all religions are true".
So Aversio, how do you "know" that one particular religion isn't right, whilst all others are false? Go! Deceitful, evasive, false dichotomy, circular reasoning Fail! Crickets..................
"So how do you know that one 'particular religion' couldn't be right and all others wrong ? Crickets........"
I don't need to demonstrate that all religions are false, which is what you have actually said in this nonsensical word play thingy and aversion/diversion blather, as this is your blithering false premise assertion.
It's you who needs to back up your reckless, positive absolute assertion of;...
Not all Creationists are 'Religious Fundamentalists' as Attenborough puts it. Dr John Mackay, Dr Grady Mcmurty,Thomas F. Heinze and many others are scientists, biologists, archelogists who have evidence of creation and can prove that the theory of evolution is wrong. Protein in cells could never organize by chance or accident to create life.David Attenborough has no proof of evolution at all. He is just a television presenter.
Nobody really thinks that everything was created in one clean sweep. This is the mistake that athiests make when criticising religion. Life must have been created at some time and been given the means to reproduce. Darwin had no answer to this and neither does any other scientist. DNA, fossils etc have always been there, all that has happened is that they have now been discovered. As a christian I believe that a creator God created the universe and ultimately all living things in it.
@johnnyM809 Where is the mistake? When a religious person tells us that God created everything at the same time, which is what Christians have told me before, what are we supposed to think? Are we Atheists mistaken for repeating what THEY SAY they believe? They would say you're not a true Christian and that you've fallen for the Evolution conspiracy. You do know that, don't you?
Why should I, or anyone else, take you more seriously than a Christian who says you're wrong?
Beeeasttttt!!!!!! Thanks to the Flying Spaghetti Monster for inventing science... if not we still be living in caves, making fire with sticks and praying to the mountain god every time it shook the ground.
Lovely stuff, thank you Sir David, your books and documentaries are a fabulous glimpse at the beauty and reality of the 'natural' world. The world we all live in . . .
You could argue "well why don't we attack handicapped people?"
Well society (the majority) recognizes their value to the survival of the species more than those who are self destructive to the survival of the species.
BTW morality is nothing more than a survival mechanism.
If I go around lying cheating and stealing and hurting people, they have a natural inclination to hurt me back, why do you think revenge is considered so sweet?
Knowing that I lust for revenge when someone wrongs me keeps me from wanting to wrong other people, because I don't want them to destroy me or my children.
Why do you think we don't respect worms? or spiders? or harmless beetles? Fuck em WTF they gonna do, stupid bugs.
@Hategrin I hear you..... just because one does not undertand the true meaning of what is being said does not mean that what has been said is true. I live in the birth place of Darwin and evolution is true it has been proven and better soon people belive this and stop the ignorance the better.
@artydean2 Could you please give us some examples of proof that one species has transformed itself into another, and where is the proof that man and apes came from a common ancestor.
@adelaide102 Ok i will, first of all look up the Peppered moth or the latin name Biston betularia, first read about the history of this moth, this is not a remarkable moth but it does prove natural selection is the true and over time it changed color due to the industrial revolution, it changed from a white moth to a black moth, ok you might argue that this proves nothing mearly proves natual selection (which in turn proves evolution but i can sence your arrogence)...... continued
@artydean2 The Peppered moth proves that species have the ability to change over time and adapt to their environment. They are still moths. Creatures were created with the ability to change.Species adapting to their environment does not prove the thoery of evolution that all species have a common ancestor. There is and only has been one species call Man. Man has changed and developed like other creatures, but like the ape has not changed into or from another species.
@adelaide102 Ape did not change directly into a human it took a long time and small changes, for example neanderthalls could not move there elbow side to side like homo sapians therefore we had the advantage, we could throw objects, it didnt go ape-man its a long list of extict species of human we where simply the best adapted and its not that wer had a bigger brain the neanderthall have about 10% bigger brain but could not convey as complex language as us therefore died. arrogence!
@artydean2 If it took a long time there should be fossil evidence. There is fossil evidence for apes, and humans, but nothing to indicate that apes turned into man.If this was the case there would be no apes left. They play a role like all creatures on Earth because they were created so. When is man going to change into another species ? Why has evolution now stopped with man ? Because evolution is not true.
@artydean2 In many houses one can find several different "species" of spoons, or silverware contained in the same family. Although these items did not evolve from a common ancestor ( they were created seperately) they can still be classed in a hierarchy. Man and apes have similarities but we were created seperately. Humans share a lot of DNA with a banana, but you would not say that we share a common ancestor.
@adelaide102 You cant compare an anatimate object with human genetics, infact humans share DNA with every organic life on earth so yes i can belive this. We share DNA with a lump of coal afterall coal is made of plants which we share DNA with, We share DNA with oil so you share DNA with the liquid in your car as its made from dead animal matter. All life came from one point there for we share DNA with everything this is evoloution all life came from one point and addeapted
@artydean2 I think we both have positions of "faith", you have faith in scientists to come up with the right answers, and I faith in the word of God. We will not agree, and that is fine, debating the issue is great. I wish you a very happy and properous new year. One day I believe we will know the answers. In the mean time lets make love and not hate the greatest thing of all.
@AllTheseWorldsAreUrs Genome 2 has nothing to do with evolution. Evolution involves things happening ‘by themselves’. Deliberately manipulating the genetic code in a plant, for instance, involves intelligent effort and purpose, the very opposite of Darwinism. The study of human genes reveals that humans have intelligent design and are not an accident of evolution. They have a creator.
@AllTheseWorldsAreUrs Research into Neandertals Genes has shown they are the same species as modern humans. Humans are less diverse than many other species.
@adelaide102 I dont really no what else to say other than DNA strands, the Gnome, all these so called missing links creationists going on about being discovered, how many other species of human do you need to now existed before you see that homo sapian (us) are not that special and im not talking neanderthall (which we now has 2 known subspecies of its own and also many humans have neanderthall dna with in us) homo erectus, homo hibbilus (hobbit like humans) were not that special!!!
This man inspired me in my youth, and his series Life on Earth - gave me the clarity I needed to break away from my religeous upbringing! Sir Attenborough - you really are a genius - this world is so much a better place because of your work - Thank you!
Wisdom. He's right. Religion was 'trendy' thousands of years ago and the scriptures were believed to be true then but as time has rolled on they have been exposed as hypocritical myths.
Evolution is way more beautiful than creation. Even if evolution is "just a theory" or just a myth ( But we all know it's a fact), it's still much more beautiful and logical than any creation myth.
@111E982a In the words of Sir David Attenborough, "People write to me that evolution is only a theory. Well, it is not a theory. Evolution is as solid a historical fact as you could conceive. Evidence from every quarter. What is a theory is whether natural selection is the mechanism and the only mechanism. That is a theory. But the historical reality that dinosaurs led to birds and mammals produced whales, that's not theory."
I'm not sure who I love more, Mr. Rogers or David Attenborough ^^
Respond to this video...Now muslims and christians have diffrence in fundamentals. one believes christ died for sins and one believes that not true, and god just forgives if you submit to him. I said earlier that I dont think we can do anything to meet gods standards (why im a christian).
@ElysianFields100 The bible is also handed out for free by the millions, but ultimatley someone had to buy them. Not for the purposes of profit but so that people have access to it, it is not free to make. Yes, muslims and jews sell their books also. About going to hell, God dont send people there, he gives them a way out. Hell is place where god is not (eternal seperation) and must be painful once realized, but based, not on our works but our acceptance of forgiveness.
@ElysianFields100 I dont knw what your spiritual view is. I just feel we are seperated from God by sin, which I believe requires salvation. I think I cannot of myself meet Gods standards, that is why christians say they find their righteousness in christ. Thats it. I dont think its packaged, imposed and sold, just presented. nobody is telling you that you have to believe it.
@ElysianFields100 I know your comment was quite a while ago, but I felt it necessary to respond. How is it that you can say that either all religions are right or theyre all wrong when the fundamentals are very diffrent among them? You dont think there can be 1 truth?
@Micahthetatter I don't agree with the statement either, but not one religion can be true either. I'm not saying that its impossible that some higher being(s) exist, but the religions we know are all made up by man and obviously false.
@joe80dmanizanerd Because there is no shred of evidence in favor of any of them. They're all based on the superstitious beliefs that were present at the time they gained popularity.
When monkeys rip each other apart yet we're so very close to the primates in DNA makeup, why should we have any more morals than monkeys ? It is clear we do not have any BETTER morals than monkeys for monkeys take care of their own kind, and rip apart other monkeys. So what then, doesn't also humankind do this to other humans, animals, plants and destroy the planet ? Why does Sir David think we ought to have any morality having evolved from sludge? Natural Selection is still in process is it not
If we don't want to believe that a certain power existed that created us all, then why are we still here, searching for what is true? I mean if there was no one or nothing that started it all to set the standard for what is good, then there could never be a right or wrong. Everything would just be acceptable. There should be no jail, nor law, nor human rights for that matter.
"What man does not know, man fears. And what man fears, man destroys."
Even reading the Bible a little bit can tell you that God didn't create the world as it is now...it was created perfectly when it was done. It's such a common misunderstanding among even prominent people like David. If you are going to reference a religion's motif at least know what you're saying...
@jazzplayer9 Thing is that if god knew people were going to sin and break his world in doing so before creation then he already knew it was going to cause innocent people to die (why give us free will?). Truth of the matter is the world has always been tumultuous as it has from its beginnings had a molten mantle which conveys through convection at different rates creating plates which move apart and towards one another.
his veiws on the natural world are put so eloquintly, i didnt think he could go any higher in my estimation reguarding his human qualitys. hes the epitomy of mankind. no imaginary friends required either.
I just want to say that-Yes it may seem like good logic on the surface. However- how can one know the difference between good and evil? Does not our Creator put this in our hearts? Do animals know the difference? It is clear-As the Bible states that we as humans are made into His Image. We see evidence of this-even Sir David sees this conflict and concludes "if evil is present then God cannot exist" We all would love a Candy Cane World. This is part 1 of 2.
it's alarming to think of the percentage of OUR population that are far from smart, and realize this percentage could very well be into the 90-95% range.
why would god create suffering? it's maybe created by him for a good reason? or because it happened that way, maybe someone asked for something and the result was suffering? or maybe there is no god and there isn't any kind of spiritual world
@Zee96969696 You can't say there isn't any spirituality in the world simply because we have no proof. like im not religious or anything but i dont want to close out things from my mind without evidence anyway...
YES! Every society HAS over time had their own 'religion' or need for spirituality to fulfil themselves, not because there has been some great truth revealed to them. So doesn't that prove that men themselves created religion??? If there had been a natural or man made disaster in the middle east a few millenia ago, no one would ever have known about 'jesus' etc and it would have been a historical myth, like Egyptian religion, no?
"People have been good to each other because of religion"? There is no moral imperative in Christianity. Christians are saved by 'grace'. You can be a child molestor, a murderer, a torturer a thief, etc and go straight to heaven so long as, even at the very moment of your death, you accept Jesus as your personal saviour.
People are good to each other because that's the way we evolved, recent discoveries i.e. 'mirror' neurons, show this.
Science and religion are similar because they are both looking for an answer to why the world exists. However science actually goes out into the world and actively searches for an answer, science can change and scientists accept the fact that many of their theories are, well, theories. Religion however, and when i say religion, i mean fundamentalist, does not go out and try to look for answers. Religion follows texts that have remained practically unchanged for thousands of years.
Well i can't speak for bible. Dont belive on it myself. not a religious person but as far as darwin's theory goes, many things goes unanswered, even he says it himself.
Ok Darwin died 200 years ago, any uncertainties he had back then are irrelevant today. And what gaps are you referring to? Have you studied evo and are actually aware of concrete examples or have you simply heard some creationists claim that there are gaps? Because evolution is a fact. It has happened, and we are products of it. There is no doubt there.
@Adavidson100 well you said it and we accept it. evolution is fact we are a product and no doubt about it. lol oh i better leave it. no point arguing with a brick wall.
You have clearly misunderstood the word 'theory'. Gravity is only a 'theory' but please jump from a tall building and you'll see the power of theory!, removing yourself from the human gene pool you fucking moron.
fucking dirty cunt... gravity is a motherfucking fact. not a theory. Iknow there are other theories without proof but his theory has flaws in it. If we were once monkeys, why haven't we developed into something else for thouands of years. and why those monkeys are still monkeys. fucking dooboo. and oh yea i am gonna block you too, atleast other ppl stated their comments better then you.
Gravity is not a fact. It is concept proposed by a theory.
Darwinian Evolution is something that has occurred overs millions of years. Thousands of years are minuscule by comparison and it doesn't necessarily mean that we change "into something else".

neuralecho 5 days ago

JaniceGhostHunter13 2 months ago

If I go around lying cheating and stealing and hurting people, they have a natural inclination to hurt me back, why do you think revenge is considered so sweet?

artydean2 2 months ago
@artydean2 Could you please give us some examples of proof that one species has transformed itself into another, and where is the proof that man and apes came from a common ancestor.
adelaide102 2 months ago
@adelaide102 Ok i will, first of all look up the Peppered moth or the latin name Biston betularia, first read about the history of this moth, this is not a remarkable moth but it does prove natural selection is the true and over time it changed color due to the industrial revolution, it changed from a white moth to a black moth, ok you might argue that this proves nothing mearly proves natual selection (which in turn proves evolution but i can sence your arrogence)...... continued
artydean2 2 months ago
@artydean2 The Peppered moth proves that species have the ability to change over time and adapt to their environment. They are still moths. Creatures were created with the ability to change.Species adapting to their environment does not prove the thoery of evolution that all species have a common ancestor. There is and only has been one species call Man. Man has changed and developed like other creatures, but like the ape has not changed into or from another species.
adelaide102 2 months ago
@adelaide102 Ape did not change directly into a human it took a long time and small changes, for example neanderthalls could not move there elbow side to side like homo sapians therefore we had the advantage, we could throw objects, it didnt go ape-man its a long list of extict species of human we where simply the best adapted and its not that wer had a bigger brain the neanderthall have about 10% bigger brain but could not convey as complex language as us therefore died. arrogence!
artydean2 2 months ago
@artydean2 If it took a long time there should be fossil evidence. There is fossil evidence for apes, and humans, but nothing to indicate that apes turned into man.If this was the case there would be no apes left. They play a role like all creatures on Earth because they were created so. When is man going to change into another species ? Why has evolution now stopped with man ? Because evolution is not true.
adelaide102 2 months ago
@artydean2 In many houses one can find several different "species" of spoons, or silverware contained in the same family. Although these items did not evolve from a common ancestor ( they were created seperately) they can still be classed in a hierarchy. Man and apes have similarities but we were created seperately. Humans share a lot of DNA with a banana, but you would not say that we share a common ancestor.
adelaide102 2 months ago
@adelaide102 You cant compare an anatimate object with human genetics, infact humans share DNA with every organic life on earth so yes i can belive this. We share DNA with a lump of coal afterall coal is made of plants which we share DNA with, We share DNA with oil so you share DNA with the liquid in your car as its made from dead animal matter. All life came from one point there for we share DNA with everything this is evoloution all life came from one point and addeapted

AllTheseWorldsAreUrs 2 months ago
@AllTheseWorldsAreUrs Genome 2 has nothing to do with evolution. Evolution involves things happening ‘by themselves’. Deliberately manipulating the genetic code in a plant, for instance, involves intelligent effort and purpose, the very opposite of Darwinism. The study of human genes reveals that humans have intelligent design and are not an accident of evolution. They have a creator.

@AllTheseWorldsAreUrs Research into Neandertals Genes has shown they are the same species as modern humans. Humans are less diverse than many other species.

@111E982a In the words of Sir David Attenborough, "People write to me that evolution is only a theory. Well, it is not a theory. Evolution is as solid a historical fact as you could conceive. But the historical reality that dinosaurs led to birds and mammals produced whales, that's not theory."

There should be no jail, nor law, nor human rights for that matter.

jazzplayer9 1 year ago
@jazzplayer9 Thing is that if god knew people were going to sin and break his world in doing so before creation then he already knew it was going to cause innocent people to die (why give us free will?). Truth of the matter is the world has always been tumultuous as it has from its beginnings had a molten mantle which conveys through convection at different rates creating plates which move apart and towards one another.

You can be a child molestor, a murderer, a torturer a thief, etc and go straight to heaven so long as, even at the very moment of your death, you accept Jesus as your personal saviour.
