  • Great video!!

  • How many watts did you use to broadcast during this video?

  • When do you generally operate? I usually working 20 meters at W1VCM on Saturday afternoons. more times than not, I'm checking into the Mairetime and OMISS nets. the Moosley beam didn't fair so well in our October Surise from mother nature, but I'm still able to get a decent signal out.

  • @kellingc 20M is usually open all day at my station, and I operate on it throughout the day.

  • You have some great videos. Keep up the good work !!!

  • Need a new mic, good video otherwise.

  • cq cq duhh

  • would people from FCC knock on your door if you transmit on frequencies outside your license limit?

  • @260830107 I wouldn't be surprised if they did knock on your door.

  • @N7TFP but how would they know though?

  • @260830107 Many ways... Radio direction finding, reports from other hams... etc. It is usually quite easy to locate a transmitter.

  • Great vid. Thanks!

  • Hey what radio do you use? That's a really nice looking one.

  • I always call QC QC but i'm dyslexic.

  • @Fetch1Milo yes same here as i said before on youtube war should be only used defensibly and we should unite the world so that inter planetary threats could be neutralised QSL

  • good response also why is ssb used over normal bands also yes i agree longer you are using the freq the more litely that someone will here you when scanning through so 20 seconds is a good choice and also asking if in use a good idea aswell 73's

  • @Jamieduk999 SSB is more popular because it is more "power efficient". Using 100 Watts on SSB is like using 200+ Watts on AM.

  • @Jamieduk999 SSB is not only power efficient, it is spectrum efficient. SSB is about 3 Khz wide, AM is twice is wide, FM is much, much wider! There isn't a whole lot of spectrum space available on HF (except on 10 meters), so SSB is the most predominant and AM only used in certain places. FM on HF is only used on 10 meters that I am aware of (although FM is used almost exclusively on 2 meters and above).

  • @arohne1 Exactally. FM is also used a lot on 6 meters as well. Some SSB activity can be found on the VHF bands as well.

  • Way better than that expert village video.. I enjoyed.

  • Really good tutorial. Short, sweet and informative. I'd like to see you do a lot more.

    KI4SYE

  • N7TFP, thank you for tutorial. this is my first exposure to hobby amateur radio. I will transmit my callsign once I get named on a tech license. it's a good first exposure. have a pleasant day out there.

  • S5 QRM !! check your antenna !!

  • great information. thanks for sharing.

  • @N7TFP Just wondering what radio that is. Thanks

  • I thought you were always supposed to pronounce letters according to the NATO alphabet in ham radio. So shouldn't you say "charlie quebec?" Am I wrong about this?

  • @ross817 Good Question! In this case it is NOT usually pronounced phonetically. Two and three letter "Q Codes" like QSO, QSL, and CQ are so well know and easily recognized that we just say the name of the letter only.

  • can I use CQ on FM 144MHZ, and 432MHZ??

  • Also, what is the difference between QSO and QSL?

  • @thisisrainerstein Great question! QSO is a noun. A "QSO" is short for a "conversationt". QSO = conversation. QSL however is like a receipt for a conversation.

  • @N7TFP I would also say that QSL often is used as a "confirmation of copy".

Like: "Did I get your callsign right, SM6YZC QSL?" - "QSL You got it right!"

  • @N7TFP I would also say that QSL often is used as a "confirmation of copy".

Like: "Did I get your callsign right, SM6YZC QSL?" - "QSL You got it right!"

    Great video by the way!

  • @thisisrainerstein QSO XXXXXX -you can communicate with XXXXXX

    QSL-COPY

    understand?

  • Which wavelength (MF, SF, or other wavelengths) is 20m?

(I'm studying for my operator's licence.)

  • @thisisrainerstein 20 meters is HF. The HF bands reaches from about 1 MHz - 30 MHz. That would be from 160 meters band to 10 meters band.

  • @SM6YZC ooops.. A little mistake. HF bands reaches from 80meters-10meters

    about 3 MHz-30MHz

  • Seattle? Do you know Ward Silver? N0AX

  • I am a new HAM, of a sense... only a handful of different contacts... This definitely helps me find new contacts. I knew about CQ, I just never thought to check if the frequency is clear. This will make me a more courteous Amateur Operator. Thanks for the advice, and the demo! My Call is KC9TDV. 73's.

  • there is a thing called " SLOW AGC " ....

  • Great video N7TFP. I will be taking my tech exam in about two and i am so looking forward to it. This video was very helpful! Thank you!

  • if someone answers you're Q about the use of the freq. are u then going to call CQ to them? why not just call CQ if u dont hear anything? and how come ur not obese like other hams?

  • @jerktrucker If someone says you're interfering with an ongoing QSO then you should find a new frequency that is clear and call CQ there. It is important to remember that you may not be able to hear both sides of the conversation.

About my weight, I don't think that "most" hams are obese. I might agree that there is some correlation between those who enjoy the hobby and having "extra baggage" but I don't think it's quite that highly correlated.

  • I am a newly licensed technician and still trying to get comfortable with all this. Your video has been helpful. Thanks for posting.

    KB1VAC

  • @saquatucket Glad to hear that I've helped somebody, stay tuned as I plan to make at least one more of these videos soon!

  • @N7TFP Is that a FT-8900 I see on your rack? If so, how do you like it? Im also new to ham & im looking for a mobile rig.

Thanks for the vid. Very informative. Nice looking setup you have.

  • Thank you great job.

    KB3VIQ

  • Excellent! Thank you for posting this.

  • Maybe in your next video you can show how to afford such an expensive ham radio setup. When I was your age my car didn't even cost that much. :-)
