Get in the habit of ALWAYS looking BOTH directions when you enter a roadway, so you won't have to worry about whether you looked in the correct direction. Over here, drivers are more aggressive than over there, and as a result do not pay as much attention to everybody else. Sounds like you have quite an adventure planned for yourself. I have spent some time in Kentucky and Tennessee and the scenery and the wildlife can be amazing. (Just my personal prejudice shgowing here, though. It is too bad you won't be on the west coast. You have not seen mountains until you see the Rockies or the Cascades.)

what a great trip! I've been to all the places you mentioned and their great. Philadelphia has so muchj history and St. Louis is a great city. I'm in Virginia and I've hiked and camped in the Smokey Mountains many times. You'll probbaly see many black bears but they tend to run when they hear you coming. my parents live in the middle of Georgia so you might drive near them. enjoy! peace2u! eric
