They were going to tear down the monastery BUT George saved it and was still restoring it until he died. A good soul. Look at how HUGE this place was!!!
I believe this video was filmed at and in George's home, a former catholic monastery that he bought and restored. And I can see the Python influence also, as this was at the time he was bankrolling "The Life of Brian" and the gnomes reference the cover of his "All Things Must Pass" album cover. One Cool Cat!
@IABOY4444 Yes! he actually mortgaged this estate to bankroll "Life of Brian" for his friend Eric Idle. George donated many thousands of dollars to various causes. This estate was to be torn down and he saved it and spent thousands to restore it.
It's funny, I remember seeing this video on an SNL repeat years ago, and at the time, I wasn't that familiar with Python, so I was a bit like "WTF?!?!". With me being now very familiar with Python, I think it's brilliant! :)
Someone seemed to enjoy Monty Python. I mean, I know George and all them were buds and all, but this video still blows my mind with its wealth of Monty Python references.
Funny how George's songwriting was bland to start with but bloomed in the late 60's to the 70's and became world class. It goes to show great songwriting is something you can learn, like guitar or TV repair. It just takes a lot of practice.
@DBMalone George didn't even think "Don't Bother me" was any good. Far from Brilliant. As far as I can tell "While My Guitar Gently Weeps" was his first brilliant song. From there he just got better.
@tedcantu1 I remember it too. I was in the Navy in school at Great Lakes Naval Training Center at the time... January, 1977. Did you ever hear the story of how it ended up on SNL?
@tedcantu1 First, I'm off on my timing. It was broacast on November 20, 1976 according to Wikipedia. I was in boot camp, so could not have seen it when broadcast.
Eric Idle was scheduled to host SNL that week. He had directed the video of Crackerbox Palace, and he and most of the Mont Python crew are in it. The last thing he did when he left home in London was to grab the cassett of the video. He talked Lorne Michaesl into showing it during the broadcast. And the rest is history.
@DBMalone Very cool -- thats great, I never knew that... As a kid I remember seeing this on SNL, we had no VHS back then so I grabbed the tape recorder and taped it --- thanks for sharing !!
@tedcantu1 Yeah... no one had VHS then. VCRs didn't come into homes until around 1980 or '81. I remember seeing my first VCR. I can date it... February, 1975. A buddy's father had some sort of job with a film distribution company so had one at home for his work. We saw A Clockwork Orange, and Man in the Wilderness on that thing. We all thought it was cool... we could watch these movies any time we wanted to!
Pretty cool that you thought to tape that video! You were Ahead of your time.
I wanna go to Crackerbox Palace! I wish I was one of those girls who hid under his bed. Sure he'd get mad at me, but at least he would remember me forever! :)
I can't help but think this would be very much the style of a contemporary Beatle's video had they stayed together. Similar to "Walrus", with goofy characters. I remember the first time I heard this song, and thought the line "I was so young when I was born" was great!
@9paperbackwriter Yes. That "house" - the sprawling estate named Friar Park located in Henley-on-Thames west of London. George bought it right after the Beatles split and it is perhaps the most magnificent home any of the four Beatles ever owned. With George's grand new digs, his songs blossoming into first-rate gems equal to John and Paul's by '69, a beautiful wife (though a shaky marriage) and great and talented friends, the post-Beatles world must have been a source of joy for him.
@watto958 i'm sorry i didnt make it so clear ok? -_- listen, i love this song alright?! I love the randomness, i love George Harrison, i love the song. What more do you want?????? Next time i'll make it more "clear" (not) so you'll be happy but i don't want to start a fight. Let's not be childish and just enjoy the music ok?
I love the song so much - but it's hard for me to hear for the last few years. My family moved into a beautiful home in 2004 which we loved and named "Crackerbox Palace" . Unfortanately in 09 we became victims of the horrible recession and lost our home. I don't even know why I'm saying this. Therapy I guess. Anyway it's all good and George's music has always been there for me!
@DarkHorse0863 Believe it or not I feel bad for you, your parents work hard and get the best for their kids and the greedy banks took everything away, well not everything, there's always a shiny day. And nobody can take away what you are and what you believe in. You are a fighter, at the end there's always a light at the end of any tunnel, no matter how dark it is.
@LeamingtonSteve, maybe; but Angus probably got the idea on his own when AC/DC formed in 1973 before this video was released in 1976, but George does look like Angus Young in that school boy outfit
in reference to why is george dressed up like angus young probably when this video came out angus was still in diapers at most, its why did angus wear the outfit george was wearring in this vidio at one point
@aerosmithbeatles The guy pusing the pram is Neil Innes who went on to play the John Lennon character (Ron Nasty) in the tv film "The Rutles". But fuck knows why he's dressed as Angus .

@TheMrtimmy28 Actually, it looks like friend of Eric Idle, Neil Innes of The Bonzo Dog Band and Rutland Weekend Television. He has YouTube postings as well, check them out.
@Topher1660 good call thanks but i was close lol i'll check em out i actually know john cleese on a first name basis i met him back around 1974 cause he was doing a tv commercial on the marine base i was staioned on he saw me doing a silly walk and laughed his ass off and we became friends. not tight but we keep in contact on holidays etc occaional phone ring up thanks
@DJCrowe501 Agreed. wouldn't want to have to take the route to go see them right now. I'm not really sold on a heaven. But I know i'd be in a heaven if I ever met either one in some other life. Lost my chance in this one. I only lived 5 hrs away from John.
I know this is nitpicking, but this video was originally in the key of A Major. For the remastered version that's on the Dark Horse Years DVD, the raised the pitch to B Flat Major (like it is on the album), but left the speed alone.
I saw this video on television way back in 1976....it was one of those late night music shows, I think "Midnight Special". Anyway, I was about 12 at the time, and I always had my transistor radio glued to my ear with one of those white earplugs. Anyway, I saw the video and I remember telling my friends about it. And we said something like, "Video? It'll NEVER work. Radio is king!"
Great song to go with this weird, wild, and wacky video. Cheers!!!

You are so right!! I do miss George and John very much. I try to play all of George´s songs on my guitar to ease my pain.

@DJCrowe501 We could give heaven Beiber, but then it would give him to hell.

@vnisanianisback I hate when that happens ... and it often happens.

We were definitely wrong on that one.
