  • Germanic Tribes:

    Franken - France

Angelsachsen - UK and North Germany

    Westgoten - Spain

    Ostgoten - Italy

    Vandalen - North Africa

Fact is much Americans have some German in their Blood from Britain or directly.

Fact is the House of Windsor was German before and was called Saxe-Coburg and Gotha. This post is not political it is just History!

    MacGammon

  • @MontyMacGammon You should really research before posting this. The Franks were always a minority in france. Thats also a reason why french people speak a non-germanic language. The decendants of the franks are in the netherlands and in west germany, especially the rhineland. Belgium is to a huge extent also frankish. The only part of france with a part in frankish tribal history is the north-east. The most pure follower to the old saal language is dutch. Riquarian is already bastardiced.

  • the rest is also extremely unprecise. west frankish got already extinct in the 10th century outside of what is today Belgium/Netherlands/Germany due to lack of speakers. The frankish heartland was Lahn/Ijssel/Sieg. As on Britain... it is still uncertain how many people in england are really from the continent in the time of the germanic tribes... the theory of population change is disputed, the relation of english people to continentals is most likely pre-dating the anglo-Saxon invasion.

  • On the british royals you are correct, but nobility needs to get seperated from normal people on a ethnic basis. The french nobility for instance is most likely really decending from partially franks, but not the normal people. Organized Genocides are something new to the earth, and gaul had a population of 11 million before the arrival of Chlodowech.

  • whatever, hes austrian! :D

  • Schwarzenegger isn't even German, he's Austrian

  • and the english and scandinavians also are ethnic germans, my dear sweet lil boy

  • As we all know, the evil guy always plays the coolest part in every movie. Thank god, I'm german because germans always play the evil guy in hollywood movies! ;-)

  • The funny thing about Schwarzenegger is: He talks like a clown, no matte rif he talks german, or english.

  • Of course Arnold is german... I dont like the guy but its no mistake to call him that, since his genetic and cultural background is. Politics is something different. The un-german Austrian is a post 1945 phenomenon.

  • Germans are the largest self-reported ancestry group in the United States.

Check it out on Wikipedia (german americans)

  • ITs Arnolds austrian accent...but whats the perspective on our language here? i do not understand...

  • I believe, that most Americans don't know what and where the hell Austria is.

  • Alan Rickman is best

  • He forgets that Hardy Kruger and Arnold ARE German...Ja, ein andere dumkopf, aber ein grosse gruppen des Schauspielers? Nein

  • Arnold is austrian, not german, just a native kind-of-german speaker.

  • Hallo ??? Was soll das heißen, "kind-of-german"? Du beleidigst uns!

    Zügle deine Zunge.

  • @HamitVucutcu

    Ach komm schon, kleiner Bruder! (;(;

  • @antiochostheos Wessen kleiner Bruder bin ich?

  • what the fuck are u talking about????

  • WTF are u blathering about there......

  • He forgot Val Kilmer in The Saint. He talks like a gay German guy, pretty funny.

  • girl george haha

  • look at 4:40 the yellow car is crashed on the left side but at 4:51 its repaired .......

    FAILED

  • oh yeah Predator with Arnie is a frigging awesome movie. one of my all-time fav's

  • vandemm,

it is never good to talk about things you (obviously) don't know anything about. Afrikaans IS a Germanic language. It is spoken in South Africa and parts of Namibia. It was derived from Dutch in the time the Dutchmen had colonies in southern Africa. And Dutch is, as you say yourself, a Germanic language. Afrikaans is even called "Colonial Dutch" sometimes. If you don't believe it... Wikipedia is your friend.

  • That's right, of course. My example was just standard German. German has so many dialects that there are probably dozens of words for "apple" only in Germany. Here in Baden we say "Öpfel", for instance.

  • German, English, Dutch, Afrikaans, Norwegian, Danish, Swedish, Icelandic and Faroese, including their various dialects, are all Germanic languages and developed from the same proto-language. Just compare: apple (English), Apfel (German), Appel (Dutch), Äpple (Swedish), Æble (Danish), Epli (Icelandic), Eple (Norwegian).

  • ah germanic is the word, not german. i`m not good in english :)

  • In Germany Apfel is not the only word for apple. Only in Hesse there are Äbbel, Appel and Ebbel too.

  • to bad there is no JACK SLATER movie or HAMLETT movie with Arnold the Hamlett sequence in Last Action Hero is fakin great.

  • Not accurate....

  • But Arnie's accent is terribly Styrian, not necessarily German.

  • Styrian is a variation of Bavarian, an German accent, mostly speak in styria in austria.

  • Of course it is. But no German would go so far as to admit that Arnie speaks something even similar to German.

  • Yeah, the most Germans would think that he is speaking "Austrian", not German at all^^

But that is because we are thaught, that the people who live in Austria are not Germans. They have an another accent, but as german you can understand the most. Its perhaps like English and...Scottish-English, I think.

    I don't know, really^^

  • okay thx

  • i always wanned to know how it sounds to an american, when sb speaks german, does it actually sound like swedish? i dunno,sb told me that......can you proof that?

  • no it doesn´t..

just listen to songs from Falco and e.g. Boten Anna from Basshunter..

first one is german, second swedish... little similarity in spoken form

  • swedish is a north german language. You`re right the dialect is similar.

  • nej, dialekten är inte likadan, we don´t have the "asch"-noices for instance and we build our sentences in a different way

  • sure is swedish an own language, but i mean that the dialect is like the german. i`m not good in english, i can`t tell you what i mean... sorry

  • yes this rocks :P

  • you son of a bitch *bam*

  • How does the german accent sound to you native-english speaking people??? I'm very interested!!

  • very harsh. not like Italian and Spanish and French that sounds lovely to the hear. but many people learn it over here.

  • what means harsh??

  • lacking in aesthetic appeal or refinement

however i think German is a great langauge to learn. also Dutch, because they are both related to English.

  • hehe thanx, yeah but german is not easy to learn, especially for you americans or englishmen, cause we do have tons of difficult irrigular verbs and stuff,i sometimes wonder why people want to learn it, yeah ok for me as german it´s no problem, cause i do use it as mothertongue........hehe.....

  • dutch is not that easy to pronounce, but it´s a lot easier to learn, the grammar is not that hard, did you guys ever tried to learn some low saxon?? it is spoken in nothern germany, where i live,we use it as second mothertongue,it´s very easy, and lots of words a similar with the english translation, i give ya some examples:

    snaak-snake

    dochter-doughter

    jümpen-to jump

    verlosen-lost

    kock-cook

  • Comment removed

  • oh man can´t you read dude????? THIS IS LOW SAXON or even better EAST FRISIAN, not GERMAN

  • It sounds sexy!

  • was sind bergdeutsche

  • österreicher und schweizer

  • is he saying "schießt den fenster" at 3.40?? xD wtf

  • I don't see why Jesse Ventura and Bill Duke are in there.

  • warum spricht brad pitt nich gleich deutsch ??? ich mein dieser deutsche bergsteiger würde doch in deutschland nich englisch mit deutschen akzent sprechen ??? xD

  • hab ich mich auch gefragt ^^

  • You forgot the best one.... Goldfinger ;)

  • nice one!

funny to see Brad Pitt doing a german accent.

Schwarzenegger is from Austria, but always hilarious to hear him speaking english.

  • ich fand es kommish

  • okay just to settle whatever everyone is fighting about, austrian and german people have different accents, like americans and british. just because they speak the same language doesnt mean its exactly the same, they change it to make it its own.

  • @demsche --> ;D <--

  • @nicPA9

    Geographisch :P

  • a german speaking country ;) nothing else

  • Zimmar, like it or not, the austrians are ethnic germans. so are the bavarians and the saxons and so on. dont they teach you guys history whereever you are from? prussia and austria have been the two major rival german powers in the 19th century. in the end prussia united all german states, excluding the rival austria.the austrians dont just speak german. they are ethnic germans.

  • ähhh the austrians are members of the bavarian tribe....

  • EFKA526, the point is that they are ethnic germans. i dont care of what "tribe".

  • to understand the history of the different german dialects you have to know the history of the german tribes... and yes, it is tribes, Stämme...

  • @DM2A4 i am an ethnic german but american

  • Austria is a German speaking country.

  • yes. but austrian german is different. arnie speaks with a styrian accent.he has an austrian accent.

austria has an own language standard. don´t mix it up with germany ! :)

  • you are right, they have their own dialect as you will find different dialects in all parts of Germany.

  • Hehhhh Arnold Schwarzenegger is Austrian, he has Austrian accent not German.

  • but they also speak german in austria

  • That´s Apollo Creed from Rocky!!!

  • What has this vid got to do with germans or germany? Arni is an austrian. The peoplein this vid're just speaking english. So what's the matter?

  • ...the point?

  • One of the actors (can't remember his name or the movie's name, the one with the plane in the desert; he plays an engineer) is a German and plays a German character in the movie, so the accent is all right. Also he doesn't exaggerate his accent like Arnold always did. So it's a bit misplaced in this video.

  • Saw his name in the credits: It was Hardy Krüger, the movie was "The Flight of the Phoenix" (one of my favorite movies).

  • Hitler was austrian, too....-.-^^ but he spokes german -.-

  • Hitler was Austrian, oh yes he was. I tell people that in history class all the time so they will stop accusing alll Germans of being Nazis.

  • First time I heard it was Austrians, starting the nazis from was from Raske Menn. In USA we see no difference as we declared war against Germany, not Austria. Schwarzenegger is popular here. It seems he is thinking in German (Austrian?) and translating his thoughts into English as he goes along, his accent is so strong even though he has lived here longer. I love hearing English spoken with an accent of any kind.

  • To prove what? That at least one famous Nazi was not a German? Does that make the Germans innocent- maybe even superior after all?

  • kinda... you see, it was hitler's fault germany got all nazi-crazy in the first place... and he wasnt even german. and the germans are very superior, take a look at their great culture.

  • Great post..I'm Icelander and i love german culture, mainly literature and music. German people are not nazi. Nazism is a IDEOLOGY not a people. There were many nazi in Danmark, Holland, France, Iceland, Sweden, Poland etc in 30's. The great problem here is that american people are brainwashing by shit Hollywood movies...

  • @iceloki Yeah northern style. Iceland rocks brother

  • schwartzenegger is austrian

  • but its german language man

  • Hans, What are you trying to say with this video? Yes, Brad Pitt provided one of the worst German accents in movie history. No one can argue that. Where is Flea from the Big Lebowski his accent was humorous or Mike Myers from Saturday Night Live.

Where is Jürgen Prochnow? or Thomas Kretschmann, Klaus Kinski & Nastassja Kinski, Wolf Kahler

The video tilte should have been German speaking people' perspective on the American perspective of the German Language.

    -Ciao
