Well done JetSkier that was an excellent guide, mentioning the manufacturers stickers on your existing memory was a great tip to ensure my upgrades would be compatible, not being computer savvy this gave me the confidence that I was buying the right stuff!
.Make sure your machine uses rather EEC or non EEC memory. EEC memory should be installed in pairs. The Non EEC type can be done one at a time. Look in manual or online to see what speed memory and how much your board can support. If you don't know what speed memory is installed there are programs that can tell you. I like Sandra.
my friend has 240 mb of ram but no internet access...can she just take the old ram chip to the PC store & buy more? will they know how much ram her PC is capable of handling?
@iMSoHigh420ritenow I don't think that would be safe to do. You know, there's this amazing website that can help you find information for anything, it's called Google. Open 24/7

So I'm considering adding more ram to my system, but I have a question, does the computer automatically detect the new ram and life goes on? Or do you have to do do some configurations after the computer is turned on?

I have bought myself a new DDR2 1GB RAM card and I can't install it, there are 4 slots , 2 of them are yellow, the next two which were always unused are black. On the second slot there was always a DDR2 1GB RAM card and the thing is that it seems to have a wider appearance than the one I bought today which is quite shorter, and they're both DDR2 1GB. It looks something like this : the old one : ______ | | | | | | |_____| the new one: | | | | | | |__
I know the 32-bit windows xp is limited to 4 gb of ram. Does that mean when I upgrade it, I put in four ddr(x) cards with 1 gb each? Right now I have 4 of these cards with a total of 2 gb of ram, so each card is 500mb? plz help
is that OCZ Vista upgrade edition or platinum series?
how do you install dual channel DDR2?. my mobo has 4 ddr2 slots ( color: blue+ black and blue+black) if i'm using 2 ddr2, should i install them in the same color slots? (like... use that 2 black slots? ) i just bought a pair of OCZ Reaper PC8500.
Generally, you will install 2 duel channel DIMMs in the same color slots, but every motherboard is a little different in different ways so i would highly suggest referring to your mobo's documentation (if you don't have it then go online to the makers website.)
sometimes it will say on your motherboard which is is. if not, just go to the maker of your motherboard's site and look up your motherboard model and it will tell you there.

So ya, you could replace all of your RAM moduales with four 1 gb rams or you could replace them with two 2 gb rams, either is fine.

how do you install dual channel DDR2?. my mobo has 4 ddr2 slots ( color: blue+ black and blue+black) if i'm using 2 ddr2, should i install them in the same color slots? (like... use that 2 black slots? ) i just bought a pair of OCZ Reaper PC8500.

Thx!
i installed 'em in the same color slots, and it is running in dual channel. FSB:DRAM is 3:4.
i got that OCZ reaper 2gb (1024X 2) for $25 after mail in rebate (better than generic memory...lol)
i have a small pc and the reaper is 2X height than normal memory, so i had to relocate dvd drive.
