With a ppeech like that; articulate, humourous and concise he would have gotten my vote. Sir Alan has demonstrated his ability to maintain order and has a wealth of knowledge regarding the proocedural and etiquette elements of the House. In the absence of Betty Boothroyd, Sir Alan deserved the chance. Though Mr Bercow is I am sure perfectly adequate to the task, he does not have the gravitas or the nature of well balanced Speaker.
Should have followed Boothroyd. It took a scum bag like Brown to insist on not only another Labour one despite tradition, but one who was massively unqualified.
Can't wait to see Sir Alan's speeches throughout the next Parliament. It's certainly a shame he is no longer in the chair, but at least we'll be able to view his passion and power on a wider scale.
As I thought and sadly, Sir Alan will no longer be the Deputy Speaker but will be an MP. The Deputy Speaker and the Speaker cannot both be Conservatives and there is an election for the 3 deputies this time. That means The Deputy Speaker will be Labour and the two of the Deputy Speaker's deputies, from each side of the house
I believe in wisdom, the big political experience, desire to allocate strategic national programs, the Priority programs being the engine of economic growth, increase in employment of the population. And scale expansion of the economic market. It honours big to you.
I know and now he has to fight for his job in October. No idea how it will work. It's not just as simple as two deputies from government and one from opposition. The deputies are in a rank, the Chairman of Ways and means will be Labour so will Sir Alan be demoted if elected as a deputy? Seems a bit of a shabby way to treat them. Whatever happens, Sir Alan or Sir Michael will lose their job. I think it could have been left a year.
Sir Michael is now retiring, so yes it would make sense to wait til after the election to elect the deputies. It seems stupid that deputies should be ranked based on their parties, meaning that Sir Alan will be demoted, just because Bercow is a former Tory!
Apparently Bercow is waiting until the next parliament, according to Christopher Chope who said to Madam Deputy Speaker that her job seemed safe for a bit longer in the summer recess debate. I also want an end to programme motions after the Wright committee reports!
Haselhurst should be Speaker. I thought this was the best speech and he has the experience which I think a Speaker needs. This was probably his last chance, unless Bercow steps down in within a few years. I hope he stays on as Deputy Speaker.
Should have been Sir Alan.....
