Although I not sure of its true origin, the enneagram existed at the pre ancient greece! the word is greek; ennea= nine , gram = symbol, letter! The Enneagram is bogus. The only reason why it "works" for some is that, like anything out there, there is some truth to it. If anyone wants to know the real history behind it and why it's bogus, check out the article from Fr. Mitch Pacwa titled "Enneagram: A Modern Myth". He gives names behind it's creation and uses sound reasoning to debunk it. I would encourage all to read it. The article is available for free on the internet.

@Serpent257 what the hell are you talking about? The enneagram was introduced to the WEST by Gurdjieff in 1911 in Russia. Jung has nothing to do with the Enneagram, some individual just applied Jung's types to it. Gurdjieff brought the enneagram from the schools he studied under in his time with Sufi's among others.

Gurdjieff was very influenced by Theosophy. He did start his own group, Anthroposophy, but it had some similarities to Theosophy. Read Peter Washington's "Madame Blavatsky's Baboon." Strange title but it's a great book. There is lots of info on Gurdjieff in it.

@TheExastrologer He wasn't a Theosophist nor was he very influenced by it. Sorry! When he came it was at the period where most were interested in such ideas. He had to make what he knew accessible to them. Everything he talks about, in a way, was designed to attempt to destroy the former knowledge that one may have had through theosophy and traditional education.

Gurdjieff talks about this in 'Life is only real then, when I am" he called theosophist lunatics.

He hated Theosophy but yet used some similar ideas, like the Brotherhood of Masters. Gurdjieff told a lot of tales about his life, many of which were not verified by anyone. Actually, very little is known about his earlier years, including his year of birth. "Meetings with Remarkable Men" could be completely made up.

Whether or not we agree on this, it remains that the Enneagram is a false tool and should not be used by anyone.

Brotherhoods do exist. However, yes he mentioned brotherhoods in the physical, actual places that exist in remote areas that still have esoteric knowledge.

Meetings with remarkable men is for the most part allegorical, however there is points of actual historical factors in it. But Gurdjieff made it for its knowledge. Nonetheless, he wasn't a Theosophist.

Re the Enneagram: Why 9 types of personalities? Why should the opposite number represent what you should strive for or what you need? You might as well draw a circle and put out a certain number of shapes like triangles, squares, circles, etc. and divide people into that. Once people think they are a number 5 or whatever, they start conditioning themselves to believe this. I know this from having been a professional astrologer for many years. It's a subtle mind conditioning.

In fact Gurdjieff never spoke about personality types, at least not in the books I have read and what I have been told. He spoke of types, but that was about essence and he said there was 27.

The enneagram is about the possible transformation of energies within a man and has its basing upon the law of 3 and 7, among other things.

In the Gurdjieff work this has a specific meaning, it refers to the alchemical possibilities in the body which begins with digestion.

The Enneagram of Personality has NOTHING to do with how Gurdjieff used it. I have studied the system of Gurdjieff for 3 years, very extensively and met with people from different "Work" Groups.

@TheExastrologer The Law of 3 forces and the Law of seven or what is often called the Law of Octaves are fundamental laws. They do not just exist in Gurdjieffs system, but in most mystical systems that can be known now. These are all very provable things.

As for where Gurdjieff learned it, some say from the different religions, some say mostly from sufism due to his sacred dances and the music he uses for the movements. The movements have their basis from the esoteric knowledge sufism.

This movie is wrong, because G.I Gudjieff did not bring the symbol to the world, because he found it through the Sufis of Asia, this is from Ahmad Yasawi and Naqshbandi mystical ways within the Islamic mystical tradition. Read the 3 volume book of Laleh Bakhtiar and you will see why this symbol belongs to the ancient Sufis!!!!

I know The Enneagram was given to Gurdjieff by Sufis, I found a person who saw the symbol carved in a rock in a sufi monastery, heard also of one more variable of its paint, my intuition tells me it should be another face of my 3d enneagram. Gurdjieff didn't invent anything -- he took what was and synthesized it in such a manner that it could be capable with and for the west, as well as it fitting his aim. Gurdjieff has stated that "The Work" existed before him and will after him.

The point I am making is that he brought the Enneagram to the west -- he introduced it to man of contemporary life in such places like Russia, Europe, America, South America -- etc.

You'd have to understand the principles that compose this symbol. A start would be coming to understand the the mechanicalness of things, the law of 3 and law of 7 (law of octaves). I believe my post implied ways to improve:

1. Use already-existing and reliable English translations of the texts.

2. Show the proper sequence of the inner hexagram: from 1 to 4 to 2 to 8 to 5 to 7 and back to 1...

3. If music is used, make it appropriate to the content, ie. Gurdjieff-de Hartmann music, not something of a lower quality.

4. Lose the references to 9 personality types unless you want to relate us to Riso and his ilk instead of Gurdjieff and his.
