Ants reminds me of Aliens (From the Franchise) lol with the queen laying eggs and all. It would be funny to build like a mini human space colony and let the ants build their colony under it so it'll be like the second Alien movie :P

Two panes of glass any size you want. sandwitch between wood or aluminum frame. Fill in with plaster of paris. Let dry. router out tunnels and chambers. Maybe coat the tunnels/chambers with cement.

@rampagedpaintballer, I put food into the nest every day but found out that they sometimes wouldn't eat it. Giving them food every two or three days seem to work best, but it all depends on how big and active your ant colony is.

@30000killers, I really didn't see them march out at all. One day after coming back from work I noticed that they were all gone from the ant farm. Not even a single one left milling about. So, no, I didn't see the queen at all.

how u get queen? cause there normaly very deep... did you shovel loads up? or maybe u got the females and males who were ready to mate and become queen and the males dies the female became queen? i bough my queen and ants of ebay

Ha, nice, I had a queen once, i acually got it on accident. I collected some eggs and some workers and the eggs hatched and they were new queens and males, a few days after that, I saw workers carrying around new eggs.

I got my aquarium tank set up with boards inside, same concept.

30x30x60 CM tank with 2 inch space from the outside for them to dig so I can still see it!

Can't wait to receive my ants :)

I didn't buy a queen ant. I think I got lucky and got one when I collected the ants from under a potted plant on my balcony.

@hilllll444 there is a website i bought mine from it is called edu sci i think a lasius niger queen plus a small colony was £10 pkus £2 delivery price but i live in england so it is probbably different for you.

An ant queen would most likely be buried deep inside the nest and not outside roaming around. If you capture a flying winged ant, however, chances are that it's a queen about to form a new colony and that ant might let you get started in forming a long-term ant farm. Good luck!

If a queen still has her wings she has not yet mated, and therefore is not pregnant. A queen immediately sheds her wings after mating, as she will never use them again. during early summer you can find wingless queens looking to start new colonies. these are the ones you want to capture to start your colony, and it will months before you see her daughters working, and thats if youre lucky.
