I think once the benefits we gain from the theory of evolution become very apparent and obvious to everyone, then many of the creationists in America will disappear.
Not likely. Many of them simply deny the truth. We already gain great benefit in the area of medicine from the Theory of Evolution, but most of them deny it. Now they will probably just say it somehow proves ID to be correct.
Creationists love to say that abiogenesis is impossible because bacteria are too complex to arise spontaneously. Then when told that the first life was much simpler than anything alive today, they say that life can't survive without features X, Y, and Z. This synthetic life, being quite simple, is a big slap in the face to those who assume a certain minimum complexity to life.
We'll probably never get the creationists to shut up. But, this is a great boon to genetic engineering and probably many other sciences. Now instead of using messy methods of genetic engineering, we can just make chromosomes.
That is the idea, it is going to be very useful in the medical field, as well as probably ever other field we know. They are calling it synthetic biology.
And here we are...... Synthetic life has been made. The idea of a god has been disproved.

It shows that life can actually come from non life as well. The chemicals can be combined to make life. It is pretty cool.
