I remember watching this and how I hated Elizebeth because she really did know what she was doing to Mary, just like her father kneew what he was doing when he killed 3 Queen's Elizebeth and Henry are not inoccent they blame other people for there misfortune and the guilt and can't own up to there own guilt!! sad really.
A few points. Most of the Lords around her were in the pay of Elizabeth, including James.her half brother. She ruled the kingdom pretty well and worked tirelessly. She reconciled with Darrnley before his murder. Proof - the twins born to her when in Loch Leven were certainly at least 8 mohths getation. At 3 months you have a miscrraige and a flush down the toilet, Darnley did NOT have syphilis. Mary had the largest army at Langside, but the people were no match for trained soldiers..
Mary was a pathetic excuse for a queen because she never understood that you can't be an effective ruler without the support of your people! She never tried to make them RESPECT her. She was a spoiled woman who thought that because she was born the queen, everyone would automatically obey her. She thought that being adored by men was the same as being respected and feared.
Elizabeth knew better. She knew how to make people listen to her
The support of her own people meant giving all the wealth to their greedy desires. Elizabeth was a murderer, and jealous of her she didn't deserve her title. Mary didn't sleep with every man that wanted her. The english royal family today even kills people that get in there way. Mary was a threat to them because she had the respect of the citizens behind her, and Elizabeth wanted the people to follow her.
Mary was tossed out of Scotland by her own people. She was considered an adulteress and murderer and nearly torn apart by a mob. By the time she arrived in England, NO ONE would have her. She taxed her ordinary citizens dry so she could have a fancy christening for her son.
@happybkwrm Oh yes, Elizabeth 'knew better' than fighting with men. She just threw temper tantrums against underlings, committed acts of spite against handmaids that stole her lovers, and let the Cecils run the real show. She was a pathetic puppet.
The John Barry score for this film is beautiful; I do like the music of Paul Cantelon music for TOBG, but the former is far superior to the latter. However, nicely done.
Love this clip!! What a bitch feast! No other actress's could ever pull that off. I am a great ,great fan of Redgrave but my god, just for the evil flicks and smirks. I'd back team Jackson!
Actually she was highly intelligent and an excellent debater. She argued pretty well with Mr Knox. Definately poor judgement on the old man front. But ,as Fraser points out, she was totally ill prepared for dealing with the brutal, and often violent, nature of Scotland at that time. So many shifting loyalities at the drop of a hat and for a wealth of reasons. I just finished the biography and I finished up liking her and at the same time, understanding Elizabeth. Good book.
In Lady Antonia Fraser's biography, MARY, QUEEN OF THE SCOTS, the author writes the acknowledged homosexuality of HENRY STUART, Lord Darnley, and second husband of the queen.
I'm a little wishy washy with Mary. She seemed like a nice person but she had BAD judgment and very reckless to boot. True, Elizabeth could have been a little more kinder to her cousin and not be so damned jealous of her. Mary should have played by the rules, made the best of what she was given and not do something that was so foolish that could cost her EVERYTHING, head included.
Her education in France only extended to languages, prose, religion and basically just living a nice life as the future queen consort. If she were brought up in Scotland, I think Mary would have been a lot more like Elizabeth due to early exposure of warring clans. But because the French educated her to merely be a French princess, statecraft was deemed unfitting for her role in life. As twists of fate go, she was to leave France and sorely regret she had taken politics more seriously.
Yeah, I agree to that.I think it's sad that the French didn't see statecraft as something she might need. Most of 16th century Europe taught their royal heirs ALL aspects of one day ruling their country, especially the boys. She could've paid closer attention to the politics circling the French courts and not have been so vain a woman, or so I've read. I feel sorry that her vanity and pride cost her her head. They weren't kidding when they said vanity and pride are two of the 7 deadly sins...
@anaofaragon The French had laws forbidding women to inherit the crown. They didn't want women ruling. French women had to rule behind the scenes, as mistresses. Sadly, Mary was never taught the realities of life. She assumed that as a queen, she would be obeyed and adored automatically.
the things is that Mary was looked upon as the more responsible monarch in the early 1560's then Elizabeth as the latter was still making up her mind about marriage alliances and Mary was already Queen of France and then returned to Scotland as queen
Due to some old protestant beliefs, I think that they saw Mary's red gown as a symbol of being a "scarlet woman"; a woman that was whorish with her body than as a martyr of her faith. With some of the things I've read about her relationships with men, can you blame them? She didn't have the best quota there, and she did some pretty foolish things, the Babington plot being one of them...
You're welcome. I'm a big Marie Stuart sympathizer; while she might've been caught up in some plots due to her own handwriting and made some serious mistakes as a monarch, she generally was a good person... It was just later in life that after years of frustration and being ignorance, Mary was too demoralized to really care about consequences anymore and gambled her fate on being set free in the Babington plot.
I got my version video edited anyone who want to watch it i'll give you link.

@Jacobitess Mary was the puppet; she couldn't rule without a big strong MAN. I think you've been reading too much Phillipa Gregory.
happybkwrm 1 year ago
@happybkwrm Philippa Gregory is not a historian. She cannot have "authority".
But I'm agree with you: Mary was a fragile woman and she often had the necessity of a strong man.

The scene around 2:49 when Timothy Dalton throws a temper-tantrum, is sometimes what I feel like doing when I'm feeling stressed

<3 Mary Stuart! "Mary, Queen of Scots" was a fantastic movie, both Vanessa Redgrave and Glenda Jackson gave stellar performances.

Why she chose to wear a red dress for her execution?
Pinochet08 3 years ago
Because Mary was a Catholic, and all Catholic martyrs chose to wear red for their faith if they were to be executed for it.
