I've enjoyed Larry's music for decades. But I am sad by the "churchianity" treatment around the fact that, after helping launch Randy Stonehill's career, Randy's wife divorced him after falling in love and then "marrying" Larry. Where was the light of truthful treatment, of "Jesus People" honesty? And what are the future ripple effects in terms of legacy and witness to others? Nevertheless, what a gifted artist.
If there had been more integrity, Dylan's story might be different too... I spent the afternoon with Larry at a Christian Artists music festival once a good long time ago. What I remember most was his bitterness towards the "industry." Sad. How different the legacy of Keith Green. Of course no one's infallible. But for the grace...
Take a close look at the lives of some of the greatest men of God in the bible, I seem to remember King David having a husband killed so that he could his wife, and what about Solomon how many wives did he have "Vanity of Vanities, all is Vanity". Don't judge brother Larry too harshly, he spent his life in service to Christ, he was a flawed vessel just like we all are. RIC (Rest in Christ) Larry!
The first two verses are a fairly standard "Mephistopheles" story - but in the third verse the main character runs from Mephistopheles come to collect his soul:
"and I saw you all alone in between the thieves
and when the lightning flashed I saw somebody hanging from a tree"
- He sees Jesus on the Cross (between 2 thieves), and :
"and as I turned to walk away I realized it was me" - he chooses to identify with Christ's death, which frees him from the deadly contract (See Rom 7:1 - 6)
Larry Norman was a Christian artist but he was also a musical artist. Does every song he sings have to be overtly Christian? I really enjoy this song and I don't worry too much about how Christian it is.
@Enoch2 Not overtly Christian but it is a song with a message about Christ paying for the singers sins. Still is there any reason the lyrics need to be Christian. What is wrong with just making a great song.
This has been my favorite song from "Garden" since I first heard the album back in '79. You did a great job on this video. Thank you. Larry is still one of my heroes.
Man this song is so musically brilliant. If Larry was not a Christian artist this would have gone over real big.
