the only real problem with this movie is it's lack of accuracy to many parts of the story and characteristics of the heroes. more artistic license was taken than LOTR for example. China is rewriting her own history. These movies from Fearless to Yip Man to this... none of them are very accurate. Read the Romance of the Three Kingdoms, it's an amazing epic.

I've watched the first part. It was certainly very good and enjoyable. But I think "Hero" and "House of Flying Daggers" are better in combining the romantic, poetic with the fighting. You still see John Woo's "roots" when the lovescenes look like a hollywood blockbuster or stylish TV commercial, for example. It's also not that full of content apart from the mere size of action. On a smaller scale it would be almost like a TV drama. But maybe it'll grow on me, I've yet the second part to watch.

I understand the stylistic choices and sentiment of the thing, its spirit is enjoyable and elevating, but it's not a piece of genius because it's "really, really big" or "very enthusiastic". This happened after Qin. Liu Bang and Xiang Yu had their warring states period which led to the formation of the Han. The three kingdoms is a warring state period after of dissolution of the Han.

Seriously, people need to stop thinking this movie was based off Dynasty Warriors, which is a fun game. The movie is based off the novel The Romance of the Three Kingdoms written in the Ming Dynasty. This novel itself is inspired by real history and people during the Three Kingdoms period in China.

I love this movie, I loved the theme and I love John Woo.

This theme music reminds me an awful lot of Hiroki Kikuta's work on Secret of Mana.

Apparently the only connection is that they are both Japanese though.

Yes, Red Cliff Parts 1 and 2 are the unabridged version of the film, while the 2.5 hour American release shrinks it down and cuts out many important plot and character developments. It was based more on "Records of the Three Kingdoms" and "Romance of the Three Kingdoms", but obviously many elements have still been embellished to make for an entertaining John Woo film; For example the exploits of Guan Yu and Zhang Fei's imperviousness to arrows.

And if your a real history buff then you know that "Romance of the Three Kingdoms" is based of "Records of the Three Kingdoms" which is the official and authoritative historical text on the period of Three Kingdoms covering from 189 to 280, that was written by Chen Shou in the 3rd century. only later did Lo Kuan-chung of the 14th centrury Write the Romanticized Novel.

It takes A LOT of action, romance, emotion, intensity, disaster and amazement to appreciate and understand a battle like the battle of red cliffs 1000 years ago! And John Woo's Red Cliff movie is a huge effort to try to feel the passion, power, strength, courage, pride, honor and ingenuity of that battle 1000 years ago at the end of the Han Dynasty, that NONE OF US COULD be there to witness...

I think their is a uk version of it but if u just want one with eng subtitles with it, then you can find a blu-ray of it. thats how I saw it, though I havent seen the cut version after seeing the 5 hour version I could not imagine having half of the film cut.

This is all based on a part of the Three Kingdoms novel, which covered a historical battle.

The cut showing in the US is a reduced 2 hour cut. There are also 2 2 hour movies available with subtitles making for a 4 hour epic (which was released in asia, etc). I'd recommend the long cut, but there's amazing stuff in both.

The music is on itunes (search red cliffs) although I'm not sure its all there (this song is).

the art work of the movie is quite heavily influence by koei's "Romance of the 3 three kingdoms series" for sure, yet the real Red Cliff Battle it's actually one of the greatest battle in Chinese History (Three Kingdom Era ~200 A.D).

These three rivals, yeah believe it or not, Liu Bei actually was fighting against Zhou Yu, and Zhang Fei and Guang yu and Liu Bei were all either captured by Dong Wu and beheaded or die on the battle field.

The game is actually based on the history, not the other way around.

@lilliquid Dynasty Warriors is based off a story entitled "Romance of the Three Kingdoms" if you're very familiar with the Dynasty Warriors name, make sure you look at the character names before you buy the book. "Liu Bei" could be "Liu Pei" , "Guan Yu, vs Kuan Yu" ..it can get confusing. Wonderful book though. =)

@lilliquid Sorry this is a little late, but the two versions of Red Cliff are the American theatrical cut, and the 4 hour long 2 parter from China. The longer version boasts more characters and development, and thus was dubbed too confusing for US audiences. If you're ever in the mood for an epic, I'd try the full film. And as was stated before, Dynasty Warriors is based on "Romance Of The Three Kingdoms" as well as its sister game "Romance Of The Three Kingdoms". Kessen 2 is as well.

I read the Romance of the Three kingdoms many years ago and I adore it. When I heard that they were making a movie inspired by part of the facts told in the book I was enthusiastic. I learned that they cut off frome the occidental version 2 hours of movie and I was disappointed. Then I watched it and was enthusiast again. A Masterpiece. I sure hope they're going to release an uncut version. And this OST is just fantastic.
