An amazing rendition by an astonishingly talented artist. Mr. Fogelberg was unmatched in his all around capabilities as a singer, song writer, artist and generous and giving musician. He only allowed a hand full of artists the rights to cover his works, although there were many requests over the years. Alison Krauss being a notable exception with her cover of "Stars". Songs like "Longer" and "Leader of the Band" are amazing in their simplicity and richness of spirit.
@bananamansouth Yes , he ruined a very good version of a song that everyone does the same way, this is a bit different but , the statement of apology to it being anything but the plaintive love song was jumping to the wrong personal conclussion!
Chauvinistic? A man has a right, and I believe a responsibility to the woman, to ask if she wants to have children. If he does want children and doesn't make that clear up front, then he is not being honest with her. He has crippled the relationship at the front end of it. In turn, if she is not honest with him about it, she has done damage to the relationshhip.
Not many artists today interact with their audience anymore and are full of bad dancing, gimmicks, etc. Part of Dan's gift and charm, together with his music, was being part of his audience. To me, that is very special!
"And as my dad left he said to me, Have fun. Stay single." - Campbell Scott in "Singles". Considering the modern day woman, maybe that mentioned-only character was on to something.
Stupid rethoric, this was and is a love song, not chauvenistic, however this singer does do one of the only versions save mine that is not bacically Tims version, great version, great voice , he is missed.
Leon Russell did a version that's as good as Darin's and much better than this one. Dan F just took it too far form Hardin's original...to each his own, that's what makes music great. Unfortunately, I just can't find the Russell version anywhere.
I love Tim Hardin, I know his widow Susan yes the chauvenist remark was stupid, but there need not be competition, so many versions of this song because Tim wrote a seminal folk classic, and it is great that so many people want to sing and interperate it, I think this version kicks ass and is one of the first that does not copy Tim's version , Tim would have like that I think.
I remember Bob Dylan, everyone got on the band wagon singing his songs, like " Don't Think Twice" Turning his work into a plethora of wimpy boo hoo melodies. Bob Dylan meant for that song to be sung with dismissal & contempt for someone who wanted to break a heart. So when you listen to Tim Hardin sing and play "If I were a Carpenter" you hear what Tim was about with this song and it goes way way beyond the melody.
@EZG60 People who write songs and record them do not usually have issue with how other's interperate it , especially in Dylan's case who would often tell PEOPLE (THAT IS NOT WHAT THE SONG MEANS, it means only what it means to you, I once told a song writer/singer Tom Ghent (Whiskey ,Whiskey) that I changed his song beginning a bit , he said hey I ust write them people sing it how they choose!
wand: you are right. Ramblin Jack does the best version of this song. He also does the best version of "DOn't Think twice". But the guy could not write a song to save his life. GL does a good job here.
This song has been one of my all time favorites as performed by Bobby Darin. I am also a long time fan of Dan Fogelberg and I absolutely loved his rendition. I thought it was at least as good, if not better, than Bobby Darins' version.
OMG! This song really takes me back and I so miss seeing him live...there was never another thrill like it. It's funny how his lyrics linger in my head and I forget what an amazing vocalist he was....his voice just matured and got so deep and rich...like honey.
Dan may have thought the song was chauvanistic because of the "my baby" part of it. Some of you may recall that Paul Anka's "Having My Baby" was termed that because he stated "my baby" instead of "our baby." I believe the words are probably more narcisstic than chauvanistic.
As an educated woman, I an not offended by having my baby..it's from the man's point of view, fact remains: woman carries the baby, man fathers the baby. BOTH are stil equals : )
I would of loved having Dan's baby. He never had children, I wonder why?
Thanks for this. I think about 4 1/2 hours ago I was leaving You Tube after listening to one last song by Dan, "To The Morning". Here I still am, enjoying his music. Never a problem with anything (you) Dan sang/recorded. Being chauvanistic (sp?) never entered my mind any time I've heard this song. I absolutely love Dan's way of singing this...
Not Chavinistic, In love pleading , the stable boy and the princess , an old story and classic folk song written by a man with an equally beautiful voice and soul Tim Hardin , I have never heard this song sang badly . Thanks Timmy!
I don't understand why Dan would even consider this song to be chauvinistic? All the guy is asking the woman is to marry him no matter what his occupation is. I mean, if she TRULY loved him, then she wouldn't cared what kind of money he makes. But then, the modern day woman is kind of narcissitic, self- centered,high-strung, and high maintenance. If they take it as an offense, then who cares? We can't figure out what you gals want anyway. Nor should we. So take us or leave us...
@Coullion43 Think it has a bit to do with the Gen X generation. My kids were born in that Decade, late seventies and early to mid eighties. I had my boys at 23 and 26 respectively. Though just one generation ahead of us kids who were born in the early fifities and sixties, our kids were born into a crazed mass media of high tech everything, they LIKE IT and they WANT IT. Kind of figure high maintenance is a given. Don't give up. There are nice girls out there. You will find one.: )
Wow! What a fantastic rendition. Beggersgame, like all the others, thank you for sharing all these tunes and videos. Dan's life, spirit, music/lyrics made this world a far more intersting and infinately better place. He was and remains an inspiration to me as a musician and man. I miss him deeply.
Beggarsgame, I have a lot to thank you for - being across "the pond" I never got to see Dan live. He is so alive in this post - laughter and humour which I have never heard before. So wonderful to hear this side of a remarkable man who is so greatly missed. Keep them coming...!
Beggarsgame, I don't know who you are, but I thank you a million times over for sharing all these wonderful videos of old, new, and undiscovered Dan.
I worked with Dan, and knowing that I never will again, or ever go to another concert, or ever see him again is sometimes overwhelming. I can't get past his loss. Your posts (and the others' as well) have been more helpful to me than you can imagine; they make me smile, they make me laugh, and I hope you keep them coming.
I know what you mean. How cool to have met him and known him. I understand how that amplifies the loss. I'm glad we've had a chance to share a few memories. Talk to you later.
It really does amplify it. I keep thinking of the conversations we had; what I could/should have said, etc. So many things I've since thought of that I wish with all my heart I could say/ask. I'd been hoping to work with him again; now I know that it'll never happen. It's taken that spark of excitement out of my career. I shouldn't complain. I know that tons of people would give anything to meet him even once, and I try to keep that in my thoughts, it's just been very hard lately...
Love the comment"chuk em'on the barby" How witty he was,a true smart ass!!Love it! I read a woman yelled out to Dan,to sing Nether Lands,in his late part of his career. His comments was "Did you have Scotch for breakfast"? I thought it was funny as hell!. My god, what was she thinking? He wasn't able to hit those high notes in years.I read that she was insulted by what he said.I felt she insulted Dan by asking him to sing a song, that he knew he could no longer do.She had leftovers from the 70's.
I just listened to "I Need You" and now this gem. I can only imagine that somewhere above, Dan is giving one heck of a concert to the angels. Again, Beggarsgame, I want to Thank You and the rest of the beautiful souls who supply these priceless memories...
Thank you beggersgame! I come and check out your videos quite often yet have not posted before today. Thanks for sharing with us that truly loved Dan, it is a treat. I was fortunate to have seen Dan many times in concert and cherish each and every time.
This song has always been a favorite of mine but I think that Dan does it better then anyone else...
Does anyone know if Dan was referring to the Steve McDonald that is from New Zealand and sings song of Scotland and his Scottish heritage? And if so, which of Steve's songs did Dan sing? I am a fan of the Steve McDonald that I referred to and if Dan did sing one of Steve's songs then that would seem likely to me being Dan is of Scottish ancestry.
I am grateful to be on this mailing list and included in this video group. Thank you for the continual gifts from Dan Fogelberg that we all receive from you folks.
So sing out loud the lyrics that have molded our lives and share with those who just weren't aware of what he had to offer to us all.
Another showing of Dan's quirky, fun and much missed humor. I never got the privilege of seeing him perform live, so these clips are a boon and treasure for myself and others not so fortunate. Thank you so much for this and all that you've posted.
Thanks again for these tremendous generous gifts from Beggarsgame& BPRUD. Interesting song choice? He could sing the phone book as for as I was concerned. Love his sense of humor! Wish he was still here with us. God, seems to take the good ones early! Why?
This is so cool to find so much DF live material. Thank you for the music and the stories of the road...on top of everything else, he has such a fine wit.
