Question, can you install this on a non dc server? If so is there a reason why?

Yes u can. There is no reason to do that, that's because u won't have clients that may not acces ur files.

U can use a normal File Server for that.

I am setting "stand alone" so I can have a server at home replicating to the office over a site2site VPN.

@mzambo666 Not sure if you knew this or not but the older server OS's ie 2000 and i think 03 wouldn't automatically run FRS" file replication services," on a stand alone dfs servers. Now fault tallorance dfs would do this sense it would store the data in the AD store, and not just the local registry.

I have a situation where I need to setup DFS on a windows server 2008 to connect to a pre-existing file share on server 2003. I do NOT want to re-configure/re-create user permissions as it is a complex permission structure.
