Nice video, I am looking at getting the Panasonic SD60 for wildlife filming (I use a DSLR for stills) Looking at this video it looks like you and it did a good job at capturing wildlife. How would you rate it ? Do you still use the SD60 or have you upgraded since making this video ? Its good to see someone else using it for what I want to use it for :)
Thanks. I still use the sd60 but am about to upgrade , not that I have anything bad to say about the sd60. Theres so many options now with the newer dslrs having video onboard.....Give me a shout when you put one together. What dslr you using ?
good luck I'd reccomend the sd60 for its zoom alone!
@alexsally I currently use a Canon 40D with a Canon 300mm F/4 L with a 1.4x tele-converter when I am shooting wildlife in particular birds. Unfortunately the 40D doesn't have any video capabilities but its spot on for stills. Which DSLR are you thinking about upgrading to ? I would check out the Canon 7D as I believe that's Canons current latest action / wildlife camera so it should give you excellent video performance.
Dan sorry its taken me a while to reply, been working... I have been kind of deciding between a canon 550d or panasonic camcorder..The canon is about £500 but the thing putting me off is the cost of a decent canon 300-400mm type lens !!
The camcorder is better priced and easier to use.
If I got the canon I'd like a 400mm prime but it would be big money I think , even 2nd hand..
hmm. I think in 12 months time technology will have moved on again..
Great video. Thanks for sharing! I've got the chance to visit Mull/Iona for a week next year in either March or June. Is either month good for seeing the wildlife? Thanks :)
THanks. I love Mull and Iona. Iona is special but its hard to say why its so tiny but is just the definition of tranquil. I have put a list of places to visit on mull on my site @ wildaboutfilms check it out
Great vid.i watched them all. I think you got a good clear voice to easy to listen to. By the way its (emma and billie ) i shall subscribe..... give bert a pat of me he looks the part.
Went to Langamull while I was on Mull, some Oyster catchers started shouting at us, but I'm surprised at their balls against the Eagle. Some great fooage, I wish I could live there.
@alexsally well the sd700 is amazing mate, check out my botanic gardens video, and remember that youtube does not show the full quality. it has mic in and manual focus, and iris, and W/B etc etc, and a shoe.. very good camera, oh and 18080p at 50p !
its a nice vid mate and the quality is great. How do you get the most from 50p? can you edit and save it ok? I see on your video you say you use adobe and link to the forum...I use corel at the moment and don't think i could save an edited project and retain that quality. can't even see 18080 as an option! THe camera looks very impressive I must say.
@alexsally part 1 as i said mate its 1080, 18080 was a typo..
as to editing, the sd700 is ahead of its time at the moment but i edit in 50p with adobe premiere cs5 and i use the desktop editor mode as you can set youy own desired framerate etc, now, i cannot output at 50p yet but im sure in time the big software companies like adobe will have a preset for that. cont.....
@alexsally part 2 ....use adobe premiere cs5, the output from that was an mp4 as i chose the output as a H.264 with mp4 multiplex at 50 fps, most importantly though, the bitrate output was set to a variable bite of 20( target) max 26, andd pass 2, ( the bitrate settings is what controlls how smooth the video will be, if i go much above these settings it is jittery, if i go much below, the quality suffers to badly..i then uploaded it straight as the mp4.
Thank you, thats useful knowledge, we crossed over there, i knew you meant 1080. If you have found that setting you're home and dry. It took me about 20 attempts at different formats to get avchd to play as good as it comes off the camera. The eagles flying is now pretty good, but 50p is the way to go.. I see you're bees flying etc is very smooth.
You were in mull in May? great isn't it? Plenty of exciting wildlife in your neck of the woods :) Was in Australia 18 months ago before I had video camera... So now I need to go back... shame. :)
@alexsally Yes Mull is most magical and hope to return one day. I wished I'd have seen those golden & sea eagles during my stay, you were so lucky :) Aussie has plenty of wildlife too for sure, hope you get back one day .... With .... the video camera :)
Most enjoyable thank you. Particularly impressed with the way you were able to follow the sea eagles in flight. I followed your link from the Corel videostudio forum. Pleased I did.

None taken. :) thanks for commentingI don't know the sd700 , what area is better than sd60? The weaknesses of the sd60 : bad wind noise, no ext mic.
thanks for watching
