What!? How CAN you like Blunder here? They totally destroyed the character in this movie. Where the guppy we all know and love? Who the h'll is this cocky bastard!?
@Flumong Awww... well it is true that they made Flounder a cocky s.o.b. but I like him anyway XD I like him better in this one than in the Little Mermaid 2 XS
This movie, while not as good as the first one, it is still a HUGE improvement from the second film. Second film was just crap. This one definitely looks like it could happen before the first movie.
gouldmark: Odd that it goes from being a Harry Belfonte hit, to being in a Tim Burton film regarding an undead freelance bioexocist with a perversely screwball sense of humor (whose attitude spawned a quirky 90's cartoon "continuation" in which he & his would've been severely underage bride-to-be in Lydia Deetz--gothic lover of the death stereotype with a fondness for photography--share star billing) & to being in a Disney film saga chronicalling a beloved fairy tale about a lovestruck mermaid.
@gouldmark: Indeed. The problem is just like most films (including prequels and sequels) and related series, consistance errors upset fans who've come accostumed to specific traits and personalities (i.e. Flounder here is more outgoing and open than his shy and fearful self in the original film & TV series), unless something bridges the gap (ex: for the Beetlejuice canon, the would-be sequel bridges the gap between the film & cartoon, explaining why Lydia and Beetlejuice become "friends").
from the ariel tv show, i thought she met flounder when they were kids, not when she met him at an older age, but ah well. at least the animation in part 3 was a little better than the 2nd, but i didn't enjoy the story in the 3rd. i didn't see part 2 either, only some pieces of it
@stallben In one of the episodes of the Ariel TV show, her and Flounder met when she was a wee thing (12, I think I remember her saying), but in this movie they show them meeting when she's already about 15 or 16.
I had not want to rant this sequel and watched it, like I did with Little mermaid two, the one with Melody the 12 year -old. But I might want to see the whole movie with out youtube.
That's the main reason why Flounder has always been my favorite one in the first movie, plus the fact that he was like the most devoted friend one could dream to have. He still is my number one in this movie because he's cute and funny anyway, but I gotta say I agree with you. I would have preferred if they had kept him like he was and maybe introduced another character with a different personality or something, instead of changing him...
I admit Flounder is funny in this movie. I just like him better with his shy personality. I think it would have been better if Disney had introduced a relative of Flounder's (like a cousin) instead of changing Flounder.
I think that might have been better indeed... Ah well, at least he didn't lose ALL of his old personality. For instance, I like that they kept the way he stammers out excuses that make no sense when he's caught doing something he know he wasn't supposed to. I'm glad that aspect of him remained.
True, maybe they thought both characteristics should go together. I think it can be a fun detail to learn that he loves music, only it could have been shown in a way that wouldn't have affected his general behavior. It's not really that I hate the idea of him becoming a little more outgoing (although I do prefer the more fearful Flounder I'm used to); it just seems weird in this prequel context. It would have seemed more logical to me if he had been slightly more timid BEFORE befriending Ariel.
That makes sense to me too. I don't hate the idea of Flounder being a bit more outgoing. But, in this movie, it's just like he was never shy and fearful at all. If he was slightly more outgoing, then I'd be fine with it, but he's completely outgoing here. Flounder could have just been a little bit more outgoing and still music-obsessed.
Hahaha! Yeah, Ariel's reckless ideas must have deeply traumatized him! XD
Yup... The main problem with the new Flounder is that he got too different to make it believable that the events we see in this movie really happened before the first one. In my head, he's just not the same character at all, so there are like two versions of the story that don't fit together, which makes it hard for me to consider the continuity official with the third film. It's still good, only kinda confusing...
There's also a continuity error. In this movie, the way Ariel and Flounder met is shown. But it was also shown how Ariel and Flounder met in The Little Mermaid TV Series episode, In Harmony.
I've read comments about that episode, but I only found a scene in another language. :(
But you're right, the new movie and the TV series directly exclude each other. (I guess the movie version is supposed to be the official one, but since the third doesn't exactly work with the first, we have to disregard some details in there too anyway...) :/
I'd like the idea of Ariel meeting some little rebel hyperactive music freak the way it happens in movie 3 if it was another character, but Flounder... I don't know. He and Ariel are such close friends, I always thought they must have grown up together, or at least known each other for more than a year (especially considering that the new Flounder isn't the kind I'd expect to become a girl's loyal confidant; now he's more the bold type likely to hang out with a bunch of daredevil guys)...
In The Little Mermaid and The Little Mermaid II: Return to the Sea and The Little Mermaid TV Series, all of the songs were original. I wonder how come all the songs in this movie aren't original. Only Athena's Song and I Remember are.
gah! too young to remember XD. But im pretty sure this movie is before that too cause of the "In harmony" episode. So maybe after the movie she started getting all prettied up lol
1:13 XD Ariel's expressions are priceless in this scene
Now...I'm not sure, But for some reason around 0:32 I could of sworn I could hear the original version of this song playing. Hm, Maybe they just sang it really good ^^
That's true, but Athena's death was unexpected. I'm sure if Triton knew what was going to happen, he would have given her the music box at a later time.
I would be freaked out if I were Ariel and saw Sebastian! Is Flounder like himself anymore? He's getting strange, but I secretly like what he's doing, anyway.

No; he's supposed to make sure no one plays music anymore. TRITON'S the one who hates music in this movie.
ztslovebird 3 years ago
I don't think Triton really hates music. I think he just doesn't want to hear because it reminds him so much of Athena.
Solitemel 3 years ago
Good point. But he might as well hate music, because it became as taboo as humans.
ztslovebird 3 years ago
I agree with that. But music isn't really what killed Athena, humans are. So he really shouldn't have banned the music.
Solitemel 3 years ago
Touche. But if he hadn't made her the music box, she wouldn't have been in the way of the ship when it crashed into the rocks.
