  • just to be clear, the LM402 (the 6.5x14) is chrome over aluminum; the COB (chrome over brass) snare in the 6.5x14 size is the LB402. it's chrome plated brass and is more expensive than the chrome plated aluminum. it also sounds a bit different. I have the LB417, which is the black beauty in the 6.5x14 outfitted with 42 strand snare wires, a coated ambassador, and a ambassador snare side and i LOVE it. my next purchase for it will be the p86 millenium strainer.

  • The trademark "crack" of a Ludwig metal snare : ) You could spend a lot more for a snare drum, and not get as good a sound.

  • It sounds like you have it "Bonhamed"! I do not revel secerets.

  • pretty good........my 6.5x14 steel free floater kills it though

  • I tried the powerstroke 3 head on my 402 for 1 gig...mate it was a bad mistake!!!

  • @splashy44 this is the drum that should be in every drummers arsenal.

  • @sparkles67 yeh..agreed. just sayin those PS3 heads choke the drum imo.

  • @splashy44 went down to long & mcquade today and traded my jimmy chamberlain signature snare and $125 for a new lm402, and i couldn't be happier. thx., for the advice on heads, i'll definately go with a coated emporer. i was using an evans onyx on the yamaha but felt it was choked too much as well.

  • Why do people insist that they never made a brass lm402? You people drive me crazy, check your facts. You can still buy them!

  • Everybody is talking about Bonham and this drum. He never played a brass Supra. They were always aluminum.

  • Tried powerstroke 3 on my 402....didn't like it, killed all the tone out of it :o(

  • "The sound The sound The sound"...

Actually, I have found in most cases the snare is no better than the idiot hitting it.

  • The LM 402 is chrome over aluminum.......they have always been made this way NOT chrome over brass

  • @zepvista yes they did make a brass lm402 and still do. Check your facts first

  • @MrDeagunJones I will concede to the fact that early LM402 were chrome over brass. However, according to the Ludwig/Musser website.ALL current 400 series Supra-Phonic snare drums, including the LM 402,are in fact chrome over aluminum.if you know something that Ludwig doesn't,I'm sure they's be interested

  • @zepvista Before anyone else flips out I'm ONLY referring to the "LM" supra-phonics LM400/LM402/LM411

  • @zepvista Dude, look on Ebay. There are at least 3 drumshops that are selling chrome over brass Supraphonics. I own one for Pete's sake! It has the brass edition tag right on the drum. I would post the link on here but Youtube won't allow it. LM402B

  • Who gives a shit about how Bonham tuned his snare-this dudes snare sounds nice because it sounds good to HIM. Thats what matters-

  • This is the way Bonzo tuned his snare in the early days. As time progressed he pitched his snare slightly higher. Also, just a random not, notice how similar it sounds to Alex Van Halen's snare sound.

  • I think you have it backwards. Go listen to Zep at the Whistle Test and the BBC sessions. His snare is almost too tight on those recordings. I think as time progressed, and especially with his stainless steel kit, he tuned it lower and lower. But I love the Supra tighter. It allows the drum to sing.

  • That's Bonzo's sound!!

  • Bonzo tuned his snare drum waayyyyyy higher. According to Ocheltree, his tech, Bonham tuned his snare side head WAY up and tuned his batter side head just under that. This is way too low and would never be picked up in a live situation with a full band.

  • Nice work. Sounds good. I have this snare with my Amber Vistalite but I am looking and trying to identify if this was really an accurate snare that was used back in Bonzo's day or not. Im also looking at a Ludwig Higher end Black Beauty. The snare is sometimes no better than the guy hitting it. ;p)

  • Ohhhh. Nice

  • i've got that baby with tube lugs and a p86 w/ the anniversary badge. bad ass drum for sure, never giving it up for anything

  • Still my favourite sounding snare of all time.

  • I´ve got Black Panther Cherry maple 13x6 and I´m going to get Powerstroke3 as a batter and Diplomat as reso. I need clear, liitle high sound with middle sustain..

Do you think it´s good choice ?

  • Hi! Yes I think it's a good choice if you want this sound.

  • thank you :)

  • Yes LM models are metal/aluminum snares. The brass snare will be a model LB.

  • Sounds Great!

  • Nicko Mcbrain from Iron Maiden uses this one

  • and John Bonham from Led Zeppelin did :)

  • was it hard to get the drum to sound like this?

  • No you must have the good tuning and the Ludwig snare LM402. Powerstroke III coated or Ambassador coated on the top and 42 strand snare wires.

  • not my favorite...the rim hits sound bland

  • Is this a COB Supraphonic? It sounds fantastic!

  • Yes exactly it's a COB Supraphonic LM402 6,5 x 14.

  • It can't be both an LM402 and COB. LM = Ludalloy Metal, which is aluminum.

  • @diehlam

The LM402 is **NOT** the COB (Chrome over Brass). LM402 is Chrome Over Alluminum. Its a solid spun alluminum shell which is chrome plated. LM402B is the Brass Edition.

  • if you ever get to go to the Hard Rock cafe in London...one of Bonhams snare's is on the wall...with gretch 42 strand snare wires..and ludwig 2b sticks....

  • ROCK.

  • is that the new or vintage supra?

  • It's a new.

  • do you use rings or moon gel?

  • No rings and no moon gel because I use a Remo Powerstroke III coated on top.

  • i have a remo coated powerstroke 3 also.. but i dont know if i need rings / moon gel or not.. and if it would differ with or without... i am only 12 though .. please help!!

  • you wouldn't need to since it has an internal muffler !!!

  • You've pretty much nailed John Bonham's snare sound. Odd, considering the powerstroke III.

  • Me likeeee.

  • wats the coil on the outside of good metal snare drums do?

  • If a drum is "beaded", it has that ring around the middle of the snare. I don't know exactly what it does, but it must add to the excellent tone of the drum.

  • It makes the shell more rigid and solid actually.. That gives it more of a solid tone in my personal opinion. I'd use this drum with just a standard coated ambassador or reverse dot coated ambassador or emperor with standard snares not 42's. Watch the tech video from Jeff Ocheltree on John Bonham's setup and youll see what I mean.

  • i want my snare to sound like ringo starrs snare during revolver

  • try taping a piece of paper over the head.

  • I too love his sound on that album. I love it on Rain (also from 66 period.) Classic Ludwig Tone

  • How are you doing the tuning on the 402?? I've just got mine. I've got a Emperor coated on the batter and kept the Ludwig resonant head on. It's close to that sound but not 100%. I tune the batter quite tight and the resonant really tight. How do you do it?? Nice sound by the way - really nice.

  • Hi! Thanks, It's the same tuning as you.

  • Man...Switch to Remo coated emperor. You need it. The one you've got now chokes the overtone down a little bit. Makes too dull of a sound. I guarantee you ll like the Remo c. emperor much much better. :) Unless you like less overtone..

  • @Ludwag511

Remo Emperor Coated on the Top side

Remo Ambassador Clear on the Bottom side

  • i'm ordered that snare...i'm so excited
