In the Hustler film, Eddie runs into a fat man he thinks he can beat, and he probably can, but he was too busy running his game to see that the fat man was better at running a game than Eddie was, right at that moment. Same thing happening in this scene. Eddie learned from the fat man, and beats him later. Eddie learns from this fat man, and uses it as a way to get out of the mentor-protege relationship with Vince which was never going to work.
I think Eddie did deliberately throw the game. The whole "is there and echo in here" and Forest abruptly saying "let's just do it." Plus, even if he didn't deliberately throw te game, he was pissed drunk.
isnt the money wrong? hes says double it three times. When Eddie wins the bet was 80, shouldnt the next bets have been 160, 320, and 640? he only puts down 400 at the end
a most vicious and clever "own". amos could not have been any harder on poor eddie here. " do ya think i need to loose some weight ?" as opposed to just " go fuck your mother". it hurts more when they're affable.
what's with them playing 9 ball, and hitting the eight ball to the nine and winning even though all the rest of the balls are on the table...lol what a massive fuck up of the rules of nine ball
I am from the United Kingdom where people like me make 88 breaks in snooker ( a lot more difficult than potting 50 straight balls on pool!). I enjoyed shooting some serious pool on holiday in Arkansas 2 years ago in which I taught lessons to 'pool sharks' in Beale Street, Memphis (Tom Cruise country in one of his films).
Eh?! If you had read my initial comment correctly you would have gleaned that my best break is 88: "people like me make 88 breaks in snooker". Come on!
Funny thing is, in life as in pool hustling, the first thing you look for in a situation is the geezer who talks himself down only to prove to be quite competent. We would never be fooled by these Forrest Whitaker blokes.
@pix042 But that's the point; Eddie doesn't realize he's being hustled until he's on the hook; that's why he is so humiliated. He never should have fallen for it.
There is nothing special meant by 'do you think I need to lose some weight?' Obviously he is saying "you thought you would beat me easy because I am fat but you lost! that surprised you". There is no other meaning from this. Only surprise is that 'Fast Eddie', the "born loser" from The Hustler days is still being taken for a mug by lesser hustlers when Tom Cruise the 'naive' newcomer is getting ready to take hustling to new heights!
I beg to differ here, Pix. While what you say may be partially true, what Forrester Whittaker is asking is if Paul Newman thought he should 'spot' him. Meaning, he should make the game easier for him (Newman). In the pool world, this is known as 'giving up weight'. Hope this helps.
Maybe. I always thought it was more mindless sharking like the test subject story. Only it's more insulting now that it's been said he's a hustler. But I appreciate your view, too.
hey, does anybody know the name of the song that starts with the guitar? it's real mellow to play pool to. if anybody could help me out that would be great. also if I knew how to put movies on here the three best pool movies would be on here.
The Hustler
Color Of Money
Poolhall Junkies
the absolute best in billiard history. R.I.P. to paul newman. one of the greatest actors in cinematic history.
Outstanding scene. Even though Eddie KNOWS he's being taken, the kid never gives in and admits it. Forest Whitaker carries it, and Newman lets him carry it, because Newman was THE MAN.
Interesting. Can't say I got that from the scene. He certainly was teaching Vincent a lesson at the end, but I didn't see it as deliberate. I saw it more as a realization that Eddie's not as slick a player as he thinks he is -- and that he has to be the player, not the bankroll. So, he had to go back and relearn his skill. By the end, he wasn't a hustler so much as a player. What was the later tip-off?
Eddy got taken to bits by Forest in this scene. He was teaching Vincent how to hustle the whole film and play smart and in the end he got taken out by a hustler. Hence the question "Are you a hustler Aimus" Eddie got shown that he is not what he used to be, and it stings him something rotten!! Thats why he cuts Vince loose. He is ashamed. Then he gets his game back. Vince ditches the game @ the end to make $. Everything Eddie taught him, that pisses Eddie off 2, he got caught by his own tricks
Yeah, and in the end Eddie really does not know if vince has played his best ganme or not! It is all about bluff and double bluff. Paradoxically, there is more money to be made form losing than winning.
no way was eddie letting himself be taken in this scene. you completly missed the whole point of this scene. The sceen is about him hitting rock bottom.
He is running a con on Vincent almost the whole time they are together, lengthening his own odds to win the tournament. Watch the film again. It is discussed in the film and they all fall out over it when Vincent realises.
The only time Eddie is taken is at the end when Vincent throws the game at the tournament.
sorry dude. i've seen this movie over 20 times. now way i see eddie working vincent here. if that's the case, this is a very poorly written sceen, becasue you are the only one that i know of that came to that conclusion.
interesting point.... maybe he didi it because he wanted to take a solo again... but maybe the scene point is there is no "the best" every one can be hooked... and every one has to learn something
@henrikoyerda67 Not deliberate in my opinion. Eddie was going to hustle the kid and found out he was being hustled. Eddie was ticked off that he missed the obvious signs that the kid was a hustler then tried to take him but just wasn't good enough to beat the kid that night. Where did it play out later that Eddie threw the games ?

That's the whole point of the scene. It doesn't play out until further into the movie but he deliberately gets taken and lets Vinnie see it happen.
