Plus it drives up food prices. And if it weren't for government subsidies and tax breaks, it would make fuel more expensive.

CO2 is a natural trace gas and one of the least heat retaining around. It is not a poison and plants need it. More CO2 means healthier forests and jungles and bigger crop yields. Very high CO2 might lead to very slight temperature increases but nothing to be worried about and generally beneficial.

But the IGCC process (gasification), which I have helped engineer at GE, significantly reduces emissions of CO2, and can be retrofitted to most current "flithier" coal burning power plants.

If you helped engineer IGCC, then you must be relatively familiar with chemistry, and if you know chemistry, you always have the same amount of products as you do reactants. To do what you're saying, you would need to convert CO2 to C, which would be incrediably inefficient.

Actually on a mass basis a typical bituminous coal will create more CO2 than SOx. IGCC will no convert SOx to any useful product. You need to remove the SOx (Sulfinol, Selexol, etc.) before you can convert it to say elemental sulfur in a Claus plant. In a large scale IGCC plant, you're producing upwards of 10^6 lbs of CO2/hr. That's a lot of resin if that's what GE is proposing. I'm contracted at the NETL (DOE) so I'm not in the industry but research clean coal.

Again, or maybe I didn't say this already but, there is no such thing as truely clean coal. But IGCC reduces coal emissions upwards of 60% and increases turbine fuel levels to a level never before reachable. Furthermore, the project which I am working on at GE would make IGCC a cost effective upgrade to currently existing filthier coal plants. We are hoping to completely replace our non-IGCC 7FB products by 2012. Our 7FA line has already been upgraded.

Clean coal is a myth, coal is one of the most polluting forms of energy from the mine to the stack, clean coal is about shifting the problem around, not solving it. The issue of water and soil pollution dosent go away when you mine it, the pollutants in the coal just end up somewhere else later and the carbon dioxide it produces just ends up in groundwater where it can cause flooding elsewhere, or form carbonic acid which will eat away at limestone structures where it occurs
